  • Simple Fighting Tips to Help You Get Out of a Street Fight. How to Punch Someone without them seeing it coming is one way to win a fight, but here's a tip on how you trick someone into not seeing your knockout punch. This week we look at the difference between distraction and reaction in order to take control of a fight before it goes bad for you. It’s not dirty, so you are playing fair.
The idea here is to trick the bad guy into getting his hands up so that he isn’t punching you. Instead, he’s putting more effort into stopping you from hitting him. In this sense you are taking control, as the bad guy is distracted and playing catch up with you.
When learning how to fight sometimes it’s better not to stand and fight toe to toe with your attacker. This only becomes a battle of will, which ultimately comes down to how is more aggressive stronger, even bigger. Here we want you to learn how to defend yourself in a fight using some simple clever tricks that will mean that you are not comparing strength with a bigger guy.
There are lots of clever tricks in the Wing Chun system that are not dirty but simply capitalise on the bad guy’s natural reactions. These are just some simple ideas that work in well if you are sure that the guy is going to attack you. It’s essential a pre-emptive moment, not necessarily a pre-emptive strike. So you don’t have to feel bad about using it.
We have lots more videos on how to fight with Wing Chun. Please visit our channel. Better yet feel free to leave a comment or a suggestion of what you would like us to film for you. It does not have to be about Wing Chun it can be about any subject related to fighting, how to fight, Wing Chun techniques, or even Wing Chun vs other styles of martial arts. We are happy to pass on our knowledge and experience free of charge.

People having this trouble with the first punch? Assault is a threat. battery is the attack. Someone does not have to be throwing a punch to commit assault. Someone in your face, looking ready, getting aggressive; go ahead and hit them. It's a threatening situation. You don't have to wait. Walk away if you can, but don't get hit because you decided to take some "moral" high ground and wait for them to throw.

    • @winstonmiller9649
      @winstonmiller9649 5 лет назад +4

Thanks for that clarity!! Because I always thought that assault was the physical attack, but it's a phrase which is possibly often misunderstand. I thought that battery was the additional hitting during an assault. How wrong I was.😊👍🏽😍

You are right in a perspetive. However it could be relevant because, at some countries, if there is enough proof that you were the first one to attack, it is you who will be punished, and in our times it is relatively easy to prove it with mobile phones.

I dont think you've actually been in a street fight.
Street fights often don't seem like they are about to start, you are talking with someone then boom, you get sucker-punched. Then 3 more guys are jumping you.
Best advise is, whatever you do, stay out of punching range. And stay out of confrontations entirely.

    • @ronin2167
      @ronin2167 4 года назад +13

Wrong.....it's easy to read body language of someone who's about to punch you. Most importantly, don't let them in your space to start with. Don't confuse street fighting with self-defense..one is all ego based and the other is protecting yourself.

Yes and thank you been studying and practicing for 6 and a half years, now.
I'm also a Pastor for the homeless here in Los Angeles and I work in some of the most precarious places, mostly with hard cases gangs, homelessness being an epidemic in Los angeles. There never has not been a time when certain people just aren't happy with what you give them. And things get too personal. There's always a jealous person, and there's always someone who knows you can defend yourself, word gets around unfortunately. So just recently returning to a homeless camp I noticed there were some southsiders, serenios, common ganging in Los Angeles around one of the tents that I put up. And I knew that something was amiss. I did stay next to my van. And this woman walked up who was also an affiliate with a gang member. And I knew something might be wrong with two situation period it was to late to get in my car. I didn't want to be trapped in my car if they would run up. So two of them approached with this woman. And she started saying something about how her tent wasn't big enough and I knew right then and there that the two gentlemen that were with her, we're looking for an opportunity so what I actually did was walk towards them as they walk towards me and I accidentally, but quite intentionally stumbled into the one man and it looked like an accident but his put him off guard. And he was quite insulted by it by the time his friend started coming at me I put my hand up I told him hey it's an accident it was you know I'm sorry. But my hands were up, and I was able to execute two very fast Palm strikes, up to his under his mandible. And he went down his friend was off balance and so I was able to turn immediately because he was off balance and sweep his legs, to punches he was gone. And then the other members of the gang that were about maybe 30 yards away. Will contemplating coming over but that was enough for them to think twice about it. I was able to get in my car and leave. Thank God. The distraction you were talking about, can also be created some other way right? Just to play stupid. And sort of stumble into somebody. Kind of takes them off guard. And then when his friend came I put my hands up, and acted as if it was a mistake hey, it's cool off it was a mistake I'm sorry. But my hands were up and I know he was coming for a haymaker. So I walked towards him in two strikes, and I was fortunate enough to hit his button. Thanks for all of the tips and the lessons. My son and I are active in Brazilian mixed martial arts. I'm a senior citizen. I'm not a tough guy I used to be. Or I never was actually. But studying martial arts, has taught me some discipline, also giving me some discernment being on the streets everyday, as to when flight is not an option. Or at least not that moment. So give myself an opportunity to flee. Or to engage, even as severe as it seems knocking someone out is not as easy as it pretends to be. But if you do train and pay attention. At least knowing the techniques and practicing them, will give you an upper hand advantage, and not always but most of the time a window to exit situation, and that's really what I'm intending to do every time because I have a family, and a son, and people I love. Fighting is never worth it but sometimes it's necessary. Thanks again.

Its called a preemptive strike.......as soon as the person steps into the attack zone he declares his intention to attack. So don't wait, stop the attack the moment the opponent declares he is a threat. You don't have to enter into a dialogue with an idiot. But you must protect yourself if he becomes a physical threat. So watch your threat zones and never hesitate to protect yourself.

    • @walterhicks5520
      @walterhicks5520 5 лет назад

It's called 'personal space' (a once frequently discussed topic, pushed down in modern times as it doesn't suit wealthy men/women feeling up lesser advantaged folks without being sued into poverty) and that's why you're allowed to legally defend yourself within this zone. If someone is acting aggressively and enters the 'reach zone/personal space' (how far your hand extends out around you in a circle) then you have the right to protect yourself. Goes to fight/flight reflex/response.

I like your idea, but I think you should always throw the first punch, and not try to distract him by keeping his hands up, throwing a punch fast enough whereYour first punch lands solid. I feel if anyone gets in your face in an aggressive manner in the street you should hit first and hit fast no distraction just trying to stop your opponent as quickly as you can so he is not a threat to you any longer. Thank you for putting good videos out and addressing very important topics.

    Can't really agree with this,
Better strategy is create distance, ideally hands raised (much easier to block/counterpunch if he starts swinging.
Secondly, if it's likely to be a fight, and only you know that, don't go 50% and 'distract' him with a slap, there goes your element of surprise.... like Yoda said "do or do not, there is no try !"
.....but....distance and hands up every time !

      @scarface8981 5 лет назад +1

That really depends on who you're dealing with.
Being up close makes his punches weaker because you take away his momentum, especially when your opponent is taller then you, he will have a longer reach.
You don't want to give him the advantage.
If you would be taller then your opponent though, then creating distance may be the better strategy.

    • @BizarroLanigirod
      @BizarroLanigirod 5 лет назад

Longer reach makes a weaker punch. In close proximity, footwork/body shifting deflect punches and create space.

I strongly disagree with the "lesson " as well Andy.
He can call it a "distraction", but hes demonstrating putting ur hands on the other guy 1st.
My kickboxing instructor taught us to always "take a step back" (create distance), keep ur hands open & down by ur side.
Bystanders will see u r not the aggressor..
+ u create a gap, if he comes forward to close the gap then let him have it.
Screw that slapping someone to distract them. Slapping people just because u have a verbal disagreement is stupid.
Take a step back and if u have to put it hands on someone do it to cause damage.
      That guys nutz.

...his explanation contradicts with itself. It's controversial to strike first he says, but he doesn't offer a solution--he offers an excuse. Note that he says once he begins, the opponent has no choice but to (and will reflexively) block. His "checkmate" as stated and demonstrated in the video was to throw the knockout punch *while the opponent is blocking/pushing away your hand*. This essentially means 2 things: 1) to any observer you are the one who attacked first, and 2) you KO the guy without his consent to fight. It's *ethically* the same as throwing a sucker punch. The only difference is that by doing this, you offer a chance for them to counter.
This would be bad because witnesses will still say you initiated the attack and you claiming that the first few strikes weren't actual strikes isn't going to help at all. It's also bad because if they do happen to counter you before you checkmate them, they can claim self defense because witnesses saw you attack first. Third, this *precaution* would just start a fight unnecessarily because most people would retaliate if you put your hand near their head, and as explained, it doesn't resolve the ethical dilemma nor does it justify self-defense (except for the other party).
The correct way to claim self defense AND to not be the initiator is to take a step back and simulate a fighting stance (disguised stances).
-If the opponent strikes, it won't be a sucker punch because you're in your stance (you are sucker punch proof at this point).
-If the opponent walks forward, you take another step backwards (even more obvious to witnesses that you are not the attacker).
-If the opponent chooses not to attack, a fight never happens. Best scenario.
-If they attack, you are reacting in self defense *and* you are dealing with it in your stance so you will not suffer the disadvantages mentioned/shown in this video. *If you are a trained fighter, you will not suffer from "reacting to his punches" because you will NATURALLY counter his punches.*
*What is a counter? It's something you do when they are striking!* Clearly, countering is *the best method* for a trained fighter to do on the streets for *all legal and ethical reasons*. *If you aren't trained then just sucker punch them! If you aren't trained, you aren't going to do a series of distractions and be able to finish it with a checkmate* (unless the other guy is a statue).
    So to summarize his technique
-is an excuse to attack someone thus not solving the ethical dilemma of striking first (because the checkmate comes before the other guy even strikes and he is telling you to do it before he does anything),
-can't help you claim self defense so you'll be charged with assault,
-offers a chance for them to counter if they successfully disengage during your distraction or if they successfully counter,
-offers no benefits to an untrained fighter (because they would not be able to finish the sequence),
-and the checkmate punch is less prone to KO'ing someone compared to a sucker punch (because your distraction causes them to anticipate impact).
-It also starts a fight for sure (except you'll be charged with assault instead of the other way around).
Now, if you don't mind being charged with assault and are not worried about ethical concerns, then as a trained fighter your sucker punch will most likely KO them (especially when they are unprepared). As an untrained fighter, the strongest punch you'll ever land is your sucker punch (because once an exchange starts, your balance will be all over the place). So the *fastest* way to end it is to actually sucker punch if you don't care about legal and ethical concerns.

Actually what he is saying is that you do make the first movement but you don't necessarily have to hit or make contact. In cases where you don't want them to swing, you can put your hand out like the first strike but not hit. They will have to react to that. With your second hand, once they TOUCH you because if they do block and you do not make contact, they have now touched you first, you may do something like a grapple or another motion for attack, which they will be 'catching up' to block. All this time you also can use to stall till an authority figure gets there if say this happens in a school area. If this is a random street fight you can use it to take dominance and perhaps drag the guy to his knees and reposition yourself before you go in for the real fight depending on how they react. It also makes them predictable. If you know they have to block you can grab their arm etc.

    • @Viewer13128
      @Viewer13128 7 лет назад +18

Syxx V Ralrock I was saying that claiming that your outreached hand was not an attack wouldn't fly (because there is no evidence that an exchange would have even occurred had you not faked a punch). I was also saying that by extending your hand, you are forcing the other person who may not have even wanted to fight to block. You said so yourself, this causes an exchange. That is why I said that not only is this method not an act of self defense (because you must initiate conflict) but that it offers a chance for the opponent to counter.
Remember, throwing a feint before the other party even tries to swing means that your feint initiated the fight. There is also no evidence that your feint would not have hit him (to witnesses) if he had not blocked, and since he did block, you're screwed. Bystanders can only attest to the fact that you made the first move, they cannot judge whether you were feinting or not. Many real fighters and martial artists (Western and Eastern) leads with a feint in their "real" attacks, so even expert witnesses cannot say that leading with a feint means a lack of intent to attack. And finally, a fight might not have happened if not for the "feint", but because of the "feint" a fight was guaranteed to happen.
As for stalling until authorities arrive before you deal the finishing blow, that would only be possible if you were a much (and I mean insanely much) more skilled fighter than your opponent. But as I have said, a much more skilled person who is in semi-ready stance will not be hit by a sucker punch anyway, so for both legal and combat purposes, starting this type of exchange would be disadvantageous if you are already more skilled.
But another thing to mention is that the demo in the video doesn`t work for stalling. The exchange must be short enough that you catch them with the 'checkmate' swiftly (otherwise the move loses it's purpose). The author of the video also never said this move was used to stall.
Lastly, if you are in the streets, even if you are much more skilled than your opponent, if your "strategy" is to prolong a fight, that is wrong. Both Western and Eastern martial artists agree on that. Even Bruce Lee's philosophy disagrees with this.
By trying to stall until other ppl arrive, there is the chance that his friends' fists will arrive at the back of your head before the authorities arrive at the site. No martial artist would advise you to purposely prolong an exchange on the streets. In the ring/cage maybe, but never the streets.
*Again, you can only stall if you are much more skilled, but if you are much more skilled, you can defend and/or end the fight at any time and be under less risk.*
If I was a witness and someone asked me, who started the fight? I would say:
"They were both talking and suddenly Mr. Wing Chung tried to strike him and then the fight began."
      or
      "Mr. Wing Chun started it."
      or
"The guy blocked Mr. Wing Chun's attack and then they started fighting."
Think about how ridiculous it would sound in the court in you said, "Mr. Wing Chun did a feint to lure Mr. X to attack so that he could charge Mr. X with assault."
*This is why if you're already more skilled, you get in semi-ready stance and wait for him to attack you. If you don't know how to fight and you FEEL he will attack you, run or sucker punch him. Again, a commoner cannot do elaborate moves against a more skilled/stronger opponent. If they try, witnesses will claim they started the fight anyway, except they'll be knocked out.*

    • @syxxvralrock5759
      @syxxvralrock5759 7 лет назад +4

What you don't understand however is that if they are in your personal space chances are you are going to get hit. These motions are a way to either stall it, deflect it, or be proactive about it. Yeah I know you are trying to avoid an exchange but let's face it, if the person is in your space intimidating you, chances are either you going to be one of many things. 1. Humiliated. 2.Maybe bullied. 3.Roughed up.
If people are in your space then yes, I agree this is the right thing to do, even if it causes an exchange, because they who entered your personal space have initiated such events by merely moving into that space. If they were going to be respectful or at least non combative about it they would not be there. Check the reactions of any animal that you aren't friendly [and some that you are] when you do this. They tense up and they give signs of discomfort. [Licking their lips, looking away, moving away.]
If you don't want to fight you can always just run. Hop back three steps from the person talking to you. Turn and jet. No need for words or combat. But if you are talking about a situation where your back will soon be against a wall this is not a choice.
You overcomplicate shit by trying to come up with any number of things to make it not viable. Firstly if you don't touch them this assumes that indeed you weren't going to make contact. This is because in order to react a person must at first understand the situation. Meaning that you already make them think about it. t. If you do this and they do respond firstly you already made their first choice to block you can move to their side. Second again, if you don't think you are ever going to get into a situation where someone is like this to you or that you have no need rather than even throwing up a defense like martial artists tell you, aren't you better off backing off and running away then? If you are talking about "A crowd" well I doubt a fight like this would even break out so therefore your example here is stupid. Even if X witnesses Y then firstly they would see that guy stepping into your space and causing the problem. Also in the same idea if you take him out quickly, "There is a witness" but once the threat is neutralized you can leave. You don't need the police if you don't know these people. With this strategy I doubt you are doing any lasting damage either.
"A commoner can't do X against a stronger opponent." Why the fuck do you think people created martial arts for? What is the purpose of your comment now? It seems to me like you want to discredit the video for what it is. It says it's for winning fights so it's definitely not going against that. Like many others I'd rather feel safe and in control rather than leave my health up to another person.
Btw that same situation where you leave this guy to the advantage can leave you to get stabbed. If you shift off to an off stance position you can be stabbed AND blindsided pretty easily. If you stay square and do nothing what's stopping them from doing that? Yep sometimes you have to make a tough choice. The techniques are for when you MUST and when you feel like your safety is compromised. It doesn't matter whom else is there really at that point what really matters is your safety.
On that same note, you are not MUCH more skilled but by training for situations that happen to come up you become more skilled. That's what the whole point of this and other martial arts are really. Technically if in your mind you are always a "weak commoner" then you are fucked when doing anything because as far as you are considered in your thoughts, "Hey I can't do shit even though commoners as least have the value of being common." A common person doesn't have the reflexes of Bruce Lee, so if you wanted to make contact with your first move, you would. If you don't, you won't they will move to defend against it but again if it doesn't touch them in the first place then there really isn't any proof of your intent and plenty for theirs. They are in your face, they are being hostile and they touched you as their first action.
Oh and on the sucker punch thing. Yeah... you can kill someone with those. A planned move that doesn't cause lethal injury will get you in far less trouble. You are right this isn't for a non trained person. If a person is watching the video they are free to PRACTICE, PRACTICING is TRAINING.

    • @Viewer13128

I'll address each point then. Please read all of the points, and when responding, mark down each point you are directly responding to so I know you didn't miss anything I already said.
      1. *If they are in your personal space.* Video's proposed solution: Do the "exchange then KO maneuver". The "exchange then KO maneuver" is designed to KO before the opponent can take control.
His claim: The initial strikes which can either land or not land (but are not intended to KO) will prevent the opponent from taking control and force them into a defensive mindset. This will let you KO the opponent with the "checkmate" blow because you would be in an offensive position against a defensive minded (reactionary) opponent.
      *Problems:*
*Legal:* When questioned who started the fight, witnesses will say Mr. Wing Chun regardless. Expert witnesses (i.e., martial artists) will also attest that an initial feint does not indicate a lack of intent to cause injury. Therefore, in terms of legality *both are the same.*
*Combat:* A strike has increased probability of KO (1) when the opponent cannot sense it, (2) when the opponent is not ready for it, and 3) when you land it with the right timing on the right spot.
If you had the free first strike, regardless of your skill level, a direct strike intended to KO a talking opponent has a much higher probability of KO than allowing the opponent to exchange with you for the following reasons:
      (a) Both results in the opponent not gaining control at the beginning. Both means you started the fight.
      (b) An opponent who has been forced into a defensive (reactionary) mindset will tighten their neck and brace for impact. A strike of the same power would have decreased chance of KO.
      (c) They may create distance reflexively. If that is the case, the exchange then KO maneuver is gone. This is because both are outside of striking distance. Re-entering the striking distance means the more skilled fighter will dictate the next exchange.
      (d) If the opponent happens to react properly (e.g., if he knows martial arts or is a good fighter) he will reverse the situation in the midst of your strike. One common scenario is a counter right as you throw you "checkmate" blow.
      e) By allowing the opponent to assume a defensive (reactive) stance, your strike will not land on the desired spot. This point is shared by all martial artists (e.g., pro fighters (e.g., Bas Rutten) to tutorial channels (e.g., ExpertBoxing and FightTips)).
      (f) Possibilities (b) to (e) can be avoided by using a sucker punch or a quick feint followed by an immediate power strike. Also, both accomplish the purpose of (a) preventing the opponent from gaining control first and both satisfy the conditions of (1), (2) and (3).
*Note: The clips shown in this video also shows proof (real footage) that an initial power strike is effective for people of varying skill levels.
      2. *You said, "Firstly if you don't touch them this assumes that indeed you weren't going to make contact."*
      *Problems:*
*Legal:* Because witnesses cannot attest to the fact that the other party ever attacked first, when asked who started the fight, they can only say "Mr. Wing Chun." They would not say, "Mr. Wing Chun who raised his hand." They would say something akin to, "Mr. Wing Chun who struck first."
The video states that the strike can either land or not land. Therefore, it does not mean what you mean.
However, assuming that it is a feint, as mentioned, expert witnesses (martial artists) will attest that an initial feint does not indicate a lack of intent to cause injury (since many use feints as an opening move to cause serious injury).
Because your hand was traveling towards the other party, the fact that it did not reach him cannot be proven in court that it would have never reached him "had he not..." Therefore, the instigator would be you regardless of whether you chose to sucker punch, or chose the exchange to KO maneuver.
3.*You said, "If you are talking about "A crowd" well I doubt a fight like this would even break out so therefore your example here is stupid."*
      *Problems:*
Please do not call me stupid. The clips shown in this video had crowds. Many fights between two individuals occur amongst acquaintances or crowds. It is unlikely that you would go picnicking with your hated enemy. It is more likely that you run into your hated enemy while both of you are with your own friends. But well, if you choose to ignore those crowds, then I guess they were alone.
      3. *You said, "Even if X witnesses Y then firstly they would see that guy stepping into your space and causing the problem."*
      *Problems:*
If he is suing you, proving that he stepped into your personal space and stared you down does not acquit you.
      4. *You said, "You don't need the police if you don't know these people."*
      *Problems:*
      (1) You were the one who said to stall until the authorities (aka police or security) arrive.
      (2) The video's exchange to KO maneuver never said it was designed for specific use against people you don't know-you're the only one saying that.
      (3) My proposal is that the exchange then KO maneuver is not ethically more sound, is only suited for skilled fighters (but increases risk), and lowers the probability of a strike with the same power to KO.
      5. *You said, "'A commoner can't do X against a stronger opponent.' Why the fuck do you think people created martial arts for? It says it's for winning fights so it's definitely not going against that. Like many others I'd rather feel safe and in control rather than leave my health up to another person."*
      *Problems:*
      (1) X must be defined precisely. X does not mean anything. In this case X means the video's maneuver.
      (2) I claim that a commoner has a higher chance of executing a sucker punch than the video's maneuver and that the video's maneuver places them at greater risk as opposed to a sucker punch. Remember, in both options, you will still be classified as the first to strike regardless of whether your first strike lands.
Let me give you an example:
A baseball player *who cannot fight* can swing the bat with tremendous force. Create a test scenario.
*Scenario 1:* The baseball player *who cannot fight* must strike the target with full force, but must successfully complete 2 consecutive taps to 2 different areas before executing his full swing. The full swing must be initiated within a fraction of a second following the last tap to simulate the speed of a real fight.
*Scenario 2:* The baseball player *who cannot fight* can strike the target at full force at any time.
For anyone who isn't a fighter, they cannot rush a full power swing in mid combat because balance midst combat is a skill that needs to be developed. A sucker punch is your safest bet if you are not a fighter. Second, as mentioned in (1.), it satisfies criteria (1) to (3) and avoids (b) to (e).
      5. *You said, "Btw that same situation where you leave this guy to the advantage can leave you to get stabbed. If you shift off to an off stance position you can be stabbed AND blindsided pretty easily. If you stay square and do nothing what's stopping them from doing that?"*
      *Problems:*
You either did not read or missed certain parts of my posts. I never proposed to leave the advantage to the other guy. The advantage is always kept by you. I said...
      (1) If you aren't worried about legality, just sucker punch them first or do the feint -> power strike. If you are, run. This prevents them from pulling a knife all the same. But let's not talk about the knife. The video didn't either.
      (2) If you are a skilled fighter, a semi-ready stance and awareness is all you need. Of course, it was presumed that if the guy is in your face that you do not take the semi-ready stance right in front of his face. A semi-ready stance implies adequate distance (according to your skill level). A skilled fighter who is in a semi-ready stance will not be hit by a sucker punch and can counter (KO) almost at the same time of the sucker punch.
      (3) I never proposed for either the skilled fighter or the layman to do nothing. I proposed that the layman either run or sucker punch, and the skilled fighter to either sucker punch, feint and power strike, stay in semi-ready stance and counter immediately, or run.
*Note: I only proposed that this video's technique was more risky than all of the above, and near identical both legally and ethically. I also proposed that a layman would execute a sucker punch with higher probability of success than the video's exchange to KO maneuver.
      6. *You said that training for situations that happen to come up will make you more skilled at it.*
I agree. However, a layman who sees this video and practices this maneuver will be in for a huge surprise. Only skilled martial artists should use this skill, and even then it will not look the same. The difference is that if this maneuver fails, a skilled martial artist has practiced for *other scenarios as well* allowing them to adapt by experience, reflex and instinct. *HOWEVER, this video's maneuver would still not be the most efficient option. In fact, exchanges like this are frowned upon by certain schools because they can counter it hard and fast.*
      7. *You said, "A planned move that doesn't cause lethal injury will get you in far less trouble."*
Actually, any move that doesn't cause lethal injury will get you in far less trouble. The problem is that the "checkmate" in the video's maneuver is a full power punch. Add to the fact that it's planned is even worse. If it was a sucker punch, there is no proof that you practiced for it. If it was proven that you have practiced it, then it's a bit worse.
Nowhere in the video did he say that this move was meant as a mercy punch. This move is meant to KO, and no one can predict the concussion caused from a KO punch.
If you want a "planned move that doesn't cause lethal injury", *you should plan to catch the guy right after the punch so his head doesn't hit the ground and try your best to convince the judge or jury.* Doing a few exchanges before the KO punch can still cause major damage. One of the deadliest KO punches in Kung Fu is a feint -> strike. Same in boxing and MMA. However, note that all of these people are trained martial artists.
      8. *You said, "You are right this isn't for a non trained person. If a person is watching the video they are free to PRACTICE, PRACTICING is TRAINING."*
Why didn't you put this in your first paragraph? I agree.
      *Problem:*
The 2 alternative moves I mentioned above still hold the same advantages over the maneuver shown in this video while maintaining the same ethical and legal standards. The first proposed move's effectiveness is proven to be effective for people of varying skill levels. The second proposed move's effectiveness is effective against even an aware opponent and utilized by boxers and Kung Fu practitioners alike. In boxing and MMA, we have plenty of footages of this. In the world of Kung Fu, Grand Master Chan Sau Chung (famously known as the Monkey King in North America) preaches this.
Since this is a Wing Chun video, I might as well mention Bruce Lee too. He is a skilled fighter. Bruce Lee was challenged by Samo Hung (who was praised by the great Benny Urquidez for his agility and skill) and Bruce Lee, as the more skilled fighter, also waited comfortably for Samo to attack. Bruce Lee did not fall into the "reactive mindset" claimed in this video. He did as I have proposed. He countered by simply waiting for Samo to strike. *This is further proof of what I mean by a skilled fighter being able to end the fight without legal risks by staying in a semi-ready position.*
      *Bonus:*
In security training, they also do not initiate anything for legal reasons. They are trained to maintain a half conversational and half fighting stance. They are trained to "react" and then takedown or KO. Skilled martial artists can also evade or counter a sucker punch with ease. Just because this video claims that there is no return from the reaction state doesn't mean that this video is correct.
Also, they are trained to use verbal commands such as "Stop!" to indicate that they are not the aggressor. However, note that if you issue verbal commands and a fight ensues, it is likely that the other party would strike first. Nonetheless, they are trained to subdue the individual.
Therefore, in a combat perspective, this video's maneuver is more risky and prone to failure (although it can be forced to work if used by a martial artist), while from a legal standpoint, it isn't even an option.

If somebody is aggressively entering your personal space, I would take that as a threat against my life.
People have been "sucker punched" and died from it.
People have been stabbed and slashed by blades in crowded places without warning.
You don't know who is armed with a firearm, knife, makeshift "pepper spray", taser, or otherwise.
A reasonable person that means you no harm will not get act aggressively and enter in your personal space.

      Joe Phasey
      _"one in a million chance"_
You have no idea what you are talking about, do you?. Work as a security guard, a police officer, or just go drinking at night.
You have to judge the situation. If someone is coming up to you, trying to intimidate you, threatening you, you either talk your way out of it carefully, or you drop them.
When I say "talk your way out of it carefully", I mean they might strike while you're talking, so you've got to be mindful of where their hands are, and their body language.
You seem sheltered. Have you had a complete stranger tell you they're going to kill you while getting up in your face? Have you had a complete stranger push you against a wall and push their face into yours wanting to fight? They've happened to me, and for me they happened when nobody else was around.
Luckily I have never been seriously stabbed, but people I've talked to that have don't see the knife coming. Sometimes you upset a person, and then later they slash you when you're not looking.
So explain to me: Why exactly would someone get aggressive with you unless they wanted to harm you? If they're going to harm you, a complete stranger, can you explain to me why they'd care about your health while they beat you up?
Because if they don't care, and they're trying to hurt you, there is a very real chance you could end up in the hospital with permanent damage, or even die. I refuse to make that gamble on some violent stranger.
What do you even gain by refusing to defend yourself? Nothing. You choose the coward's option and gain nothing.

Geoff Thompson(bounced clubs for 10 years in England) talks about "the fence". While you talk you keep your hands in front of you at chest level and move them casually as you speak. If the punch comes, you block with one hand and strike with the other.

People who are watching this. If you want to win a fight, the most basic thing you should do is KEEP DISTANCE. If he approaches you and gets into your personal space, move back. Tell him to stay back and repeatedly affirm that you don't want any kind of confrontation, while ensuring that you maintain distance. If he moves towards you, you move back. If you he moves away from you, you stand ground.
At a distance when he throws the punch, you'll be able to react to his punch. The most important instinctive ability you will have is to move your head back during a punch. This instinctive reflex will be enough for you dodge his punch. Then you need to immediately react and put him down and descalate. Walk away asap.

    • @gendoruwo6322
      @gendoruwo6322 5 лет назад +1

Unless you're already backed against a wall and can longer retreat?
To gain distance again, you have to 'convince' the aggressor to back off.
Thus the tactics above can be useful.
Either to 'convince' them to back off, or to allow you a chance to restrain them in a lock or a take-down, resolving the situation.

If someone missis that first shot they'll be off balance...then uou can counter or knock them down and take off.
If you start sticking your hands in someone's face isn't smart.

  • @adamhelper3277

This is very good. I've been fighting my whole life and found that people have no defense when they are attacking. In other words wait for them to attack and then attack them before they land a punch. Dont attack them when they have a defense. Now yes you can try and lure them to block or attack. But sometimes its just best to attack and not waste any movements. Also see it in your head and mentaly know what your going to do before you do it and have a plan. Always works best. Be more aggressive and they will constantly be on the defense. Also don't wait too long for them to have a good opportunity.

It had some extra surprise added as well because there was no eye contact and mouth was hidden a bit with the tilted head or he could of picked up on an indicator that the punch was coming? I'm doubting that anyone less than an experienced individual could of slipped that punch regardless, since, situationally speaking, there were LOTS of ERRORS in play that factored into that guy getting clocked like that...(and tru to the advice I was given at a pretty young age)The guy looked right at the spot where he was intending to strike the guy right before he launched that bomb 😆 on the other side of that coin; dude was stupid fast and, apologies in advance if I'm out of line but good job on him for giving himself the best chance to have the first one count like that.

I dont like this for 1 reason. An agressive fighter -and let's be honest that most attackers are such- he will start swinging like a mad man the moment you move. So do you want to exchange with that guy or do you want to fight properly? How many attackers will "block" your hand once you put it up? You are either gonna get grabbed and controlled or you are gonna get a massive swing party comming your way. This is a foolish advise, with all my respect. It might work for a guy like you, but you are skilled -anything will work for you. Most kids watching this are gonna get smacked big time. I suggest sticking to what one knows-if you are a wrestler, get in there. if you are stronger and more massive -get in there. Do you have foorwork-get the fuck out. most ppl dont know how to throw a punch on the fly. Just dont present your hand out there...

    • @douglasobannon
      @douglasobannon 6 лет назад

Interesting point in the case of a more aggressive fighter. I think you’re saying the aggressive fighter will not respond to the initial move by blocking, but rather would go immediately to offensive strikes. But, if that’s the case and he doesn’t respond, then you just continue with the initial movement becoming a clean, unresponded to first strike - followed by a 2nd and 3rd obviously. Either way, if he responds with a block/flinch reaction of any kind (and then you work the technique as demo'd), OR he doesn’t respond and so you continue right into the first strike, it’s about gaining the initiative when it’s clear the fight is ‘on’. I do agree with you that you don't want to just "present your hand out there." It must be sold with intent, especially because it might become the first strike. I think the point the video is making is fights begin before the first strike is thrown, so watch for the signs, and then control the opponent making him respond to your chosen point of contact, not his. Once he’s on reactive defense, it’s much harder for him to strike offensively. Choose your battles.

In my opinion, any initial movement makes one appear as the aggressor. And unless YOU want to be the one hauled off to jail when the police show up, it is very important not to appear as the aggressor! The best advice I think in the moments before a possible physical conflict is to keep one’s hands presented palms forward and in a non threatening manner as if trying to de escalate the situation such as is commonly practiced in self defense Jiu-Jitsu. By keeping one’s hands and arms outstretched as part of a casual and non threatening disposition, one is not only ready to respond instantly to any attack, but also doesn’t appear as the instigator of events when police consider who’s going back to the police station with them.

Two comments: "It's not dirty, so you are playing fair." 1) Playing "fair" has no place in self defense. Someone is trying to hurt you, and you are in a position where you are forced to defend yourself or be seriously injured (otherwise, it isn't self defense, it's playing BS dominance games). Don't "play fair" in a self defense scenario; do *WHATEVER* you have to do to escape that situation. 2) The first thing that came to my mind while watching this video was the legal aspects of taking the initiative before punches start flying. Despite what I said in point #1, keep in mind that you may very well have to explain your actions to 12 of your peers, so make sure that you can't reasonably be accused of escalating a situation that could have been defused.

As beautiful as this pacsau to straight punch combo is, I still don't get the point. Is it for legal reasons or denial because the way I see it, if you rapidly raise your hand inches from someone's face, then you basically started the fight.
Alternative option 1. De-escalate. back away but ready to spring forward if necessary with hands up while saying something like, ok let's just take it easy.
Option 2, Attack. Once situation is assessed and combat seems imminent, then bypass tricks, save your life and strike first as hard as you can. No one if not trusted should invade your space as illustrated anyway. Basically either we are going to hug or kiss past a certain point or you not me is about to get knocked the fuck out!

What do you do if it against a gang member? There was a gang outside a McDonald's and when I was walking in one of them came up to me and we end fighting and I hit him and when he fell the rest of them just ran up on me and threw me to the ground then punched and kicked me for about a minute then left. It didn't hurt that bad but I just went on and got my food and left.

I guess that is the name of the boxing game-distraction. I once fought a very good boxer and used this patty cake technique (with fists though) and he got so frustrated and lost his cool-I got in one punch-fight over.

I used this in a boxing fight and I made openings for headshots . I got 8 jabs/ hooks to the head using this technique. It works as a very good Feint
