Bees wax & BLO paste on the black steel - looks great, avoids most rust, and as it wears, adds to the rustic look.
Buffing it slightly will make the scrolls pop. However, I do like the black iron look
Finger weg! Habe eins! Vergessen
I was thinking the same thing. Polish the face a bit to give the decoration a Scrimshaw effect.
Maybe leave it blackened but put a color in the scroll work to bring out the decoration work!
A gold inlay would be really nice!
Love to have one!
Gold inlay is nice. But then you would have to shicel it again so the inlay won't come out.
Wax it leaving it black, it looks great, the other option would be to drive yourself insane and sand or somehow clean out the chiselled pattern while leaving the rest black, I think it would make the pattern pop while retaining the rustic look
A very fine tip on a die grinder might work perfectly for this
I like the black, that really made a nice looking axe. Thanks for the video's!
I love the look of it black, I think it'd look even better if you could somehow get that chisel work cleaned out to a clean silver look.
I think it is great that you asked your wife for her design help. I have benefitted from my wife's input many times.
Any finish is fine. Beautiful work. Most of all I love that treadle hammer!! Lol
Leave it black, greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
I really liked the near mirror finish it had before the heat treat!
Leave it black ! Looks good nice work on the ornamental work.
Thank you for asking!!! The black looks great!!!
Very nice John, Black with wax.
Leave it black- looks GR8 !!
I like your show. I originally wanted to learn how to make knives and swords. That's not really that complicated. After watching a Blacksmith making various items makes me want to give it a try.
Your a inspiration.
I like it the way it is with the dark finish, but it'll look great either way.
Leave it black. Makes it look old antique and would look great on a wooden cane. Great job
Awesome axe! I prefer the blackened look
looks great, I like in between... that way the pattern will pop out just enough. I learn a lot here thank you!
I believe a nice medium scotch brite finish is easy to keep up with. It's a nice satin finish.
The black looks great, don't clean up/out the scroll work, it'll just collect water and grime, the black on black creates a nice shadow detail effect.
I agree with the comment to keep the scroll work dark and do a brush polish on the rest of it.
John, I'd choose leaving it black with a wax coat, and _maybe_ something in the engravings to make them "pop."
I make my canes ("walking sticks") from premium Northern White Ash. There is a saw mill about 30 miles away that specializes in premium Northeastern hardwoods.
That safety stop on the treadle hammer is genius... I've caught my hand in my treadle before, it did not feel good. Ever since I've been using tongs to hold my chisels, which leaves a lot to be desired for control... I'll have to see about adapting it to suit my hammer, thank you for showing us that!
I vote for keeping it black. Maybe chase the chisel lines so they show up better.
Blackened is so beautiful, maybe highlights to bring out the chiseled decoration, though it was smooth-ground..... I trust your judgment, I am sure whatever you do with it, it will be a great piece!
an antique finish that already shows some character patina on it !!!
Excellent work👍👍👍. Thanks for sharing
I like the black finish,
Just a suggestion for the handle. I used a reasonably straight chestnut branch for my combat axe handle. ( I do ancient reenactment fighting as one hobby).
Stripped the bark after letting it dry for about 3 days, let it air dry for another week then point steamed it to help straighten it out. I've been using it on combat for about 4 years now and still holding up well. I cut the chestnut in late winter so there was very little sap in it. I was originally going to use lancewood but my boss needed the trees in the driveway pruned and I thought, "why not give this stuff a try, it's a lot lighter." Still plenty tough, the axe is half-way between a single handed and full two handed in length.
Ofcourse black finish wid pattern pop in silver and clean and crisp cutting edge will look killer. Enjoyed chiseling part on treadle hammer .👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🪓🪓🪓🪓
I’m a fan of bright smooth finishes that will be in my hands. But the blacked look is nice, and does say “blacksmith”
Starting a few of your videos so I can find them watch them tomorrow.
Hope you enjoy!
I like the black coloring. The scrolls look cool. Thanks for the awesome videos!
Excellent work! Really nice item too. I'd keep it black and BLO (or that waxy stuff you use).
I like the black finish, but i also think a satin finish would be nice too.
love the black, but i know it will end up awesome no matter what.
I think the black finish looks best with the look of the decoration.
I'm agreeing with Warren it would look amazing black with the detail in shiny steel, maybe the flat on hammer face steel as well then some wax.
Well, I'm waaaaaaaay too late, but I love it the way it is. Just some wax to finish it.
Looking good. As far as the finish goes, if it's gonna get used then it really doesn't need much more. Only gonna get banged up over time anyways. Can't wait to see it finished though.
As it is John look's grate , Watching you chiseling in the scroll on the axe makes me won't a treadle hammer . It look's better than etching. :)
Leave as is but pop the pattern somehow. Thanks for another cool project John. Be well.
You’ve probably already made your decision but I would have to agree with all these guys the black finish just wear your detail is touch it up a little bitAnd beeswax it awesome video
Hello John
That is a wonderfull looking axe and i think it would not be used as a tool
It is a StatusSymbol used to Show to the people .
Yes it can be used as a tool but it looks so good that use ruined it
I like the Black Look and the dekorative elements as bright metal shining in the groove .
So you have a contrast and a great Look
Take care have a good week and greetings to your wife Jannet
Yours Frank Galetzks
Personally, I like the black look. As it is used it will develop wear marks on the black and make it more interesting.
It's looking really good. I would like to see a mix. Can't wait to see the next video John. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend John. Forge on. Keep making. God bless.
Love your videos. Definitely have helped me alot with my journey
Have always thought you did great work.
But John you have deffanetly steped up your game on this project.
AWESOME JOB JOHN! Award winning work.
And knowing you if you chose to craft a handle it will be equal to the task.
Big supporter of keeping the forge finish!
I always enjoy your videos, John. But this is something I've never thought about. What fun!
my recommendation is nail polish in the chisel work, blue, red, silver, or gold. it is cheap for a retouch fairly durable, the excess can be wiped off, and it can be cleaned with acetone. leave the head black to make the scroll work pop.
The only thing I would do is to grind the striking surfsce of the hammer clean, the rest of the axehaead already looks great
I love it just the way it is
Love it the way it is.
I like it the way it is
I would leave it black, but keep the edge of the axe and the face of the hammer polished. I would also see about rechasing the engraving so it's also bright and shiny. I think the contrast between the matte black and polished silver looks better. Of course the usual wax finish would be appropriate.
I like it how it is. I'm looking forward to the finished version!
Very Nice Mr John😇👍👍
i personally like the oxidized finish on that. itl lend to the rustic aspect while still retaining the refined look with the facets and the chisel work
This is turning out so great! I do love the darker look of it, I hope you can keep that as you finish the piece! And thank you Combat Abrasives ❤
Gorgeous sir thank you
I love it how it is!
Either keep it black and lift the vine out with with a carful cleaning of the chisel lines or lighten the faces to pop dark chisel lines. It's gonna look great 👍🏻
I love the temper finish
Great channel great video. Looking forward to part 3!!!
Looks great! Can’t wait to see it finished!
Leave it black.
Both finishes will look good, so maybe a second one is in order
That is a really nice black finish.
Excellent work 👏🏻
Slightly buff it so the pattern stands out
Beautiful axe head. Black finish rules......
Very interesting, thank you for sharing!
Leave it black…. Black bear forge 👊👊
Love your work 👍
Id leave it in the black like that and maybe use the Dremel to clean up the decorations
the black oxide looks good
I like the dark color it has now, but I'd like to see the chisel work brightened up to add contrast. I think that would really pop.
Good morning John, that’s a great looking axe head for walking or using. Thanks for sharing with us, looking forward to seeing how you finish it up. Fred. 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👋👋
Looks good, I'd like you to keep the axe black and just get your ornamentation back to shiny. For the handle I can recommend blackened oak
I think the in between look would look good. Polish the high points and keep the dark color in the recesses. The way it is now, you can't really see the decorative scroll work. If you're going to put that much effort into the decorative elements, you may as well show it off.
wonderful project. Great work John - both the head and the video!
Like it the way it is.
Take it back to polish, then do an instant coffee etch! This will make a long lasting dark finish and will look old and rustic with a good combination of dark and light
Its looking good i would leave it black less finger prints to clean off
I like the black finish. Maybe only polishing up the hammer head.
Very fun project, I like the slightly brushed finish myself. Thank you for everything you do.
Beeswax wax would be my preferred finish. The reason being that it's the oldest and love the way it looks.
That’s turning out beautiful, I’m feeling inspired…..
I think the black finish with the scroll work being a metal look would really pop. Either way I'm sure it will look good when you're finished.
My son wants you to leave it as is. I like the satin finish
The black was very striking as you ground the edge. Stick with it.
Polishing and wax has a functional purpose. Keeps axe from sticking in wood and reduce rusting. But black with oil or wax will do same thing.
Looks great the way it is John. Bee's wax and BLO is all you need. As said above it will protect it as well.
Nice job
Nice work, l like the black maybe polish the hammer face.
Agree with others that left black with beeswax is what I would do. The wax will just give it a slight shine!
I like both finishes, maybe the shinny one a little better.
I'd say leave it black but clean out the decorative work for extra contrast!
Looking good, John. I would like to see the scroll work stand out. As for the color, not sure what to do, need to get rid of the new, new look.
I prefer the classic well cared for look.
Sir, I really enjoy all your videos! I'm learning a lot and appreciate the effort of explaining and making quality videos! Thank you!
