We also got these in southern California. Terrific bait. We call them "ghost shrimp". I personally never tried catching them, as picking sand crabs is just much easier. But it may worth an outing with the kids!
I take my family out to pump nippers every time we all go fishing. The kids and misses love it, they find it more exciting than actually fishing. They take over and collect all the bait, they only need me to bait their hooks and cast their lines 🎣
If the tide is partially up or down on the bed dig along the waterline as the yabbies will be higher up in their holes. The big nippers are usually the males and usually they are in the upper part of the hole in their bulbous turning chamber. If keeping over long hours always check for dead ones and toss them out. Colin John.
Nothing better than fishing with the Grand Daughters still trying to catch and underwater Chipmunk they wear goggles and flippers and come in all different colours LOL
Hi Roger, - Sand prawns, or sand Pink prawns! 🎣 🇿🇦 We also have Mud prawns, in muddy rivers sections they have shorter nippers of same size! Also Cracker prawns which are similar in color, like mud prawns, have one nipper slightly larger than other. And swimming prawns which enter rivers at times, - 🦐
Hi Rodger do you have a solution for dealing with the stinky red bait smell in terms of how to get ridd of the smell from you hands after using it as bait? Thanks alot and keep up the great work, well done! Faiez from Capetown, South Africa
Hi Faiez, you just have to wash your hands well. I don't have a solution. I do know that I don't like to put chemicals on my hands or any foreign smell that may repel fish if it gets on my bait.
The one thing you may have not mentioned, an hour out on Deepan Spit on the Hacking, or your local chosen location pumping nippers, by yourself, is both a workout physically and more so a therapy to the mind. Fill the bucket, then dump the contents back into the river channel, go home in a better state of mind, get the rods out and rigged doesn’t really matter.

I looked for this video, great lesson. I'm pretty confident I'll manage to get some nippers next time I'm out. Thanks Roger 👍

Great adventure for the kids !

How do you hook up the yabbie on a hook?
Any suggestions on an aerator?

My daughter loved pumping for nippers when she was younger, now she won’t even pick them up or bait her own hook, says there too vicious

It's a long I don't fish seeing this is like I lost the touch
