About Ayyappa Swami
Sabarimala is a famous temple in Kerala dedicated to Lord Ayyappa who is
the son of Lord Shiva and Mohini (an avatar of Lord Maha Vishnu). The
Sabarimala season starts every year starting from mid November to mid
January. During this time, lakhs of devotees all over India visit the
Sabarimala temple. However before proceeding to Sabarimala, each
devotee has to observe a vratha lasting at least 41 days. During this time the
devotee has to live a life of strict austerity; he has to avoid non vegetarian
food/liquor/cigarette, should not shave and he should wear only black
mundu/veshti.
During this season, many temples in Kerala organize Ayyappa Vilakku,
which is a ritual that lasts 2-4 hours starting from midnight to the early
hours of the morning. Most Ayyappa devotees take part in Ayyappa Vilakku
before proceeding to Sabarimala. A typical Ayyappa Vilakku starts with an
Ayyappan Pattu in which devotional songs in praise of Lord Ayyappa are
sung by devotees. These songs are a collection of seven basic types such
as Andissevam, Pulissevam, Eezhassevam, Ilavarassevam, Velissevam,
Panthalassevam and Velarssevam. After singing these devotional songs a
procession will be held around the temple. Finally the devotees perform
Kanal Chattam in which the devotees jump on top of fire sticks which
signifies the end of the Ayyappan Vilakku ritual.
