December 5th and 6th is celebrated in the Netherlands and Germany for Saint Nicholas, respectively, and it's a similar holiday in both countries. GErmnay and Sweden celebrate Christmas mainly on Christmas Eve, and that's the day of giving gifts.
Germany, The NEtherlands and Sweden all celebrate Christmas for three days Dec 24 to 26.

To answer the question. Kids are supposed to put their shoes out with the drawings, carrots and sugar for the Sint's horse (who's called bad weather today) as far as i remember. It's also always a huge day when the sint arrives back into the countries ( Belgium and the Netherlands both celebrate) and he also announces that their are no bad children this year.

Gevulde speculaas= filled speculaas cookie.. it's made with the speculaas spices but it is not that brittle. Gevulde koek= filled cookie. Actually not at all seasonal! Gevulde koeken are a staple for already decades and decades! Yes for sure they are also produced fresh at bakeries and those are really divine! Actually the filling is not marzipan but amandel spijs= a softer mix of almond and sugar.

I just turned 40, and I have had an advent calendar every year I can remember. When I was a kid, it was always chocolate, but as an adult I've have a Harry Potter mini figure one, a sock one (which was only 12), a cheese one (2 years in a row now), and a build your own Christmas village (which was chocolate)

pepernoten/kruidnoten are sold months before sinterklaas (september), we also call santa the christmasman ( kerstman ). You should eat 1 of each 3 types of the chocolate ones together at the same time.
Hamka's are 1 of my fovarites, they are ham and cheese flavored ( ham + kaas ).
Snelle Jelle or ontbijtkoek should be eaten with butter on top. Lots of kids get a slice of this in their lunch boxes ( next to bread).

Snelle Jelle is also the stage name of a popular singer. His name is Jelle, so he named himself after the gingerbread slice.
the subway crisp is a limited edition, they do 3 flavours and then let the audience decide which one to keep (KFC fried chicken, Pizza Hut margherita, and the Subway one).
Hamka's (ham-kaas) are favorite in the Netherlands and they've been around for ages. maybe it's the flavor profile that was a big hit there. it's the flavour of grilled ham-cheese sandwiches that are popular here.
the dutch really love spiced biscuit. in any way, shape or form. I love the soft bakes known as taai taai (tough & stale) and pepernoten. "pepper nuts" aren't actually nuts and don't taste like pepper, so I hope a supermarket renames it. It looks like a piece of cobblestone street and tastes like aniseed. which is not everyone's favorite, but in Friesland it's a very common flavour. the dutch are really good at liquorice, like the scandinavians.
that breakfast "cake" slice is something we enjoy with a warm cup of tea or coffee. I either put speculoospasta (spread) on a slice, or just dip the slice in my cup to soften it.
as a kid I was really fortunate enough to live close to the border, we sometimes went to a cheap dutch supermarket, and the first Hema store was opened around here. always had the pleasure of knowing their food and traditions.

Leading up to the 5th of december children can set their shoe by the fireplace (most children dont have a fireplace nowadays so they will set it by the heater). That goes on, every day, from the moment Sinterklaas arrives with his boat (somewhere in november) to the 5th of december. the shoe will be filled by sinterklaas and his helpers, black pete's (or should I say mom and her helper, dad.) Every morning the child will find a toy or candy in their shoe.
Sinterklaas is celebrated with your whole family. Everyone gets presents but only the kids will think it's Sinterklaas. The parents will hide them and will tell the kids "I think sinterklaas came by, I heard something in the yard/barn/kitchen" (wherever the parents hid the presents) My parents always said they had to go feed the chickens to knock on the window, throw some pepernoten and say it was Sinterklaas. Then the kids will run to the place and see jute bags full of presents. When they grow older (and dont believe anymore) all the pleople will fill in a list and pull a name so they can make a present for the person they pulled from the name pile. That happens on the 5th of december.

You asked if we leave things out for Sinterklaas, we do. Children will set their shoe by the fireplace leading up to the 5th of december and they will leave a carrot or apple (for Sinterklaas' horse) and/or a drawing for Sinterklaas and his helpers. There's also the sinterklaas news which the children can watch. the news will follow sinterklaas and his journey from spain to the netherlands. (there's always something going on, sometimes the presents get lost, drawings get stolen, one time they forgot Sinterklaas entirely (his helpers just left without him and they found out a few days after they left) Very funny to watch, also as an adult, they implement a lot of political aspects to the episodes so it's always very funny.

So Kate and Alex I’m from America In Pennsylvania to be exact. We say Santa Claus. Do u say Father Christmas over there? In Pa we eat pork and sourkrout on New Year’s Day for good luck. I was wondering if u ever had pork and sourkrout? It’s made with pork and sourkrout on top of mashed potatoes. It’s one of my favorite all time dishes.

Do we leave the gevulde speculaas out for Sinterklaas? No, we leave him a carrot for his horse.

Santa Claus is based on Sinterklaas. That is what we learned as kinds on school! 🙂

Sinterklaas is not the same as Christmas. Sinterklaas is a seperate holiday. We also have Christmas. Completely different guy, different traditions, different date. Just fyi.

Ahhh we definitely didn’t get that 🙈🙈🙈 that’s amazing you have both. Is one celebrated more or seen as the bigger holiday?

@@ThisWithThem Sinterklaas is definitely more of a children's holiday. It is a bit controversial these days, because it is an old white guy who has "Zwarte Pieten" (Zwart means black in Dutch. Piet is the Dutch spelling of the name Pete) working for him. Kind of like how the Smurfs (the blue fantasy creatures) have different kinds of smurfs, there's different kinds of Petes. Like a head pete, a packing pete, etc. It's celebrating Sinterklaas' birthday. The original Saint Nicolas was a very generous man, and they based the legends and holiday on him. You put your shoe underneath the chimney (or at the door if you didn't have a chimney), leave a drawing or letter for him, maybe a carrot for his horse (he has a white horse), and the next day there would be kruidnoten or pepernoten (the spiced little cookie things you had in the beginning of the video), with some chocolates, and a wrapped present in/around your shoe. Christmas is the same over here as it is everywhere else, except we have Christmas Eve, First Christmas Day and Second Christmas Day. (kind of like boxing day, mostly where people return gifts or go buy more things, not really much of an actual festive day)
Sorry for the long message, but hopefully this teaches anyone who reads this a little bit more about it. :)

the subway one is a limited edition, they do 3 flavours and then let the audience decide which one to keep (KFC fried chicken, Pizza Hut margherita, and the Subway one).
Hamka's (ham-kaas) are favorite in the Netherlands and they've been around for ages. maybe it's the flavor profile that was a big hit there. it's the flavour of grilled ham-cheese sandwiches that are popular here.

Santa claus is derived from sinterklaas. Santa, or father christmas as you call him is just a ripoff. Christmas for us is just a holiday to be with family and eat big festive meals.
