    I love that the first "attraction" they mention are outlet stores. And they're way out at the edge of town. Sums up Barstow perfectly.

    Great town! Passed through there 20 years ago and had my vehicle and trailer stolen & set on fire. How can you beat that hospitality? Then your cops tried to blame me for it, even after they caught the meth heads who stole it! Thumbs up!

      That is life these days, dude, it's sad but it just reflects how shitty life in the modern times really is...the desert still really is a beautiful place. The eighties was the best decade...after that, it all went to crap.

      @@desertrose1226 ''That is life these days'' not where I live, here we never have even something remotely crappy happen like the degeneracy that's happening in places like Barstow. Also that's a defeatist mindset, call it out and stand for something better or it'll just get worse if you tolerate that crap.

    I was stuck living there for half of my junior year and my senior year of high school. My mom and dad are still there. Graduated from BHS in '74 when they were still the Riffians. I hated the desert and still do. I got out of there as soon as I could! The only thing I liked was Rainbow Basin. I am glad that they finally restored the old railroad station. It's a beautiful old building but hell, you can't ever get inside of it!

  • @elkawyatt5567
    @elkawyatt5567 3 года назад +10

    Years ago, I was a resident of Barstow. My mother used to work in the radio station just above the traincar McDonald's when a young girl and one male were shot and killed in a botched robbery attempt. An under cover police officer was there with his family when the adult male walked in brandishing a weapon and forced his way in behind the counter demanding McDonald's employees to open the main safe, the police officer saved lives by quietly sneaking innocent patrons out of harms way. He then shot the suspect, as the suspect reappeared and opened fire on the police officer killing the young girl. The poor girl didn't even stand a chance because all the commotion sent her into rapid panic mode as one relative tried desperately to restrain her to the ground, however she unfortunately quickly broke free of the grip and stood up and that's when she caught a bullet straight to the head. All this happened right behind the police officer. It was such an extremely heartbreakingly tragic story that made major headlines all across the country. I cannot recall exactly, but I want to say this happened approximately about late 90's/early 2000's. ...I never did like that building at ALL, such a very creepy place! Even prior to that incident occuring, that entire structure seemed to have it's very own dark energy about it. As a teenager, I constantly had extremely dark nightmares about the place for years long before the shooting. And the nightmares usually involved shadow figures of some sort chasing me all throughout the building.

    I got stranded in Barstow for three fucking months. I was homeless and staying at the desert Mana. I worked doing the new arrivals intake. For some reason I got pulled into their politics. The city council had a meeting. Everyone seemed to be at odds with each other. I wanted to leave the room. I was hoping there wasn't going to be a fight. Anyway, I got lots of stories to tell from dropping off of highway 66

    When I was 17 in 1973 a friend and I went cross country in our VW bus from NYC to LA. We broke down outside of Amboy.
    Got towed back to Amboy where the mechanic at Roy's Garage hooked us up so that we could get to Barstow, which had an official VW repair shop. I remember thinking that we had entered the TV show, Green Acres, with funny names for small towns: Amboy, Ludlow, Barstow... Where's Pixley???
    But, we were really surprised that Barstow was a big town and very happy to get our VW bus repaired.
    I am now near 70 and have always had a fond memory for Barstow...
    Funny thing is that I have been back to Amboy twice but never passed through Barstow again..

    ... No good paying jobs w/benefits in Barstow (just minimum wage w/no benefits). No 24 hour public transportation to depend on (locals lose jobs b/c they can't work the evening & night shifts due to transportation). More then half the town depends on Welfare. The local police don't arrest physically abusive boyfriend/husband (because they "live in the same house/apartment" as the victim). Drug addicts everywhere. Only good elementary schools are Montara, Henderson & HWY 58/Skyline area. Absolutely nothing to do in Barstow, except play video games at home & watch cable TV. I lived there for a long time & left in 96.

I drove that bridge & scary road every day & never had or heard of any crime in the town. With more people there’s more crime. I’d go back if possible but now stuck in Texas… love your town!
