Just for your info, JH Williams III is the main artist on the book, though I’m sure he helped plot it all too. And as others have said, Kate Kane is a cousin of Bruce Wayne and there was some unfortunate editorial messing in the later bit of this run.
Tynion’s Detective Comics would be a good follow up for you to understand more of the Batfamily. I would suggest Green Arrow by Mike Grell or The Question by Dennis O’Neil for more street level superhero stuff. I you want to broaden your horizons, Wonder Woman by Azzarello is stand alone and Green Lantern by Johns was the most important run for DC in the 2000s, but it has 3 volumes.
Definitely want to check out The Question! Like I said, I’m going old school mentality right now as I dive into DC…if the character looks cool…I’ll give it a try, haha. Have heard good things about Green Arrow too and Green Lantern (heard Geoff John’s run is top notch) was one of the original reasons I wanted to check out DC but just haven’t gotten around to it yet lol. Something about the lore and background of Wonder Woman doesn’t really appeal to me but I know a good writer can really make a character shine so I’ll have to think about checking that one out down the line. JH Williams actually did the majority of the art in this book! Which is astounding considering it’s so incredibly detailed and unique and he still had the time to also write the book. JH Williams is very well known for his unique paneling, which is what you see throughout most of this book. Also, read Doom Patrol by Grant Morrison! If you love X-Men, I feel like you’ll love Doom Patrol. Also Secret Six by Gail Simone. Both focus on more obscure DC characters. You don’t need to know anything about these characters or teams when going into these books.
I’ve got Doom Patrol, going to read it soon!! Haven’t heard of Secret Six but I love Gail Simone on Twitter, haha - so I’ll be very excited to check that out!

This series is from 2006 & 2008 so unfortunately the TPBs for the series are a bit hard to find, so digitally is probably the best option. But if you’re going to check it out, read “Secret Six: Villains United” vol 1 first (because it collects to 6 issue mini series of Villains United, where this version of the team debuted, and it also collects the Secret Six 6 issue mini series), and then their 2008 ongoing. I know it seems like a lot, but it’s worth it. Just a fair warning, this series is a bit more mature than most of Marvel’s or DC’s books, a lot of gore, sexual content and partial nudity.
This Batwoman omnibus makes a great early DC omnibus. Not bad dude! Other DC omnis I would recommend would be the Batgirl Returns and Batgirl of Burnside, along with the Injustice and New 52 Justice League omnis.
Getting a sense of your taste I think you would love the Catwoman of the East End omnibus. Also to understand Batman Inc I would go to the Grant Morrison Batman omnibuses. He created Batman Inc while on his run.
