    One of my favorite things is to not look at the answers and guess along with the panel. If you listen to Dorothy’s questions to the second person, and listen to the audience’s reaction, just imagine that his line is “dildo manufacturer”. I’ve yet to find out what the actual line is but if is...
    I want to also point out that Bennett has disqualified himself from guessing Frank Sinatra on the basis that his wife couldn’t keep it quiet, but sometimes it’s almost uncanny how fast he can figure out celebrities 🤔

    Tall Story was a comedy where a college co-ed (Fonda) pursues her school's star basketball player (Perkins) for romance and marriage. It was released in 1960.

    Today, the Census Bureau takes surveys constantly, besides the decennial head count. They do consumer, housing, health care and education surveys among many others. They also do population updates with selective samples, between the all-inclusive 10-year count.

    How do these panelists ask just 3 or 4 questions and figure out immediately what the mystery guest does? Was there ever a Quiz Show Scandal around this show? How did Bennett Cerf nail it so fast without a hitch? I'm suspicious!

    • @MrEdwardCollins
      @MrEdwardCollins Год назад

      The fact that Cerf nailed Fonda's identity so fast leads me to believe the opposite.
      If he secretly knew her identity ahead of time, I suspect he would have asked a few more questions and milked it a little more, before taking a guess.
      Note that the panel never received any extra compensation for correct answers. Also note that if the panel continuously guessed the mystery challenger's identity too early, like this time, the entire show just wouldn't be entertaining to watch. It's more fun to watch them struggle... at least for awhile.
      The quiz show scandals occurred when prize money was involved, usually on game show formats where questions were asked. It was to "improve ratings." This all occurred during the late 1950s. However, by 1960 is was already a federal crime to fix a game show.
      This broadcast was televised in April of 1960. Thus, I don't think he knew her identity ahead of time.

  • @DanieltheTruebadour

    Show aired April 3, 1960. Ms. Fonda would have been 23 (& 8 mos.+)

    • @MrEdwardCollins
      @MrEdwardCollins Год назад

      Whoops. Your math is off.
      Fonda was born 12/21/1937. Which means she wouldn't turn 23 until December of 1960.
      Yes, this clip was indeed from April 3, 1960. Thus, Fonda was just 22 years old at that time. (22.28 years old to be exact.)

    Anybody got any ideas about what Jane Fonda says to Mr Daly at 15:07? Looks like part of it might have ended up on the cutting room floor.

    • @MrEdwardCollins
      @MrEdwardCollins Год назад

      It looks like she mouthed the word shit. If so, maybe she did it because she thought they were getting close to guessing her identity.
      After Cerf DOES guess her identity a moment or two later, you can hear her ask, "How did they get that?" I suspect she thought she wouldn't get identified.

    Whether it was 45 years ago or 45 months ago or 45 days ago or 45 minutes ago, as far as I know, Jane Fonda has NEVER apologized for her ILLEGAL trip to Communist North Viet Nam - or for the lies which she parroted then or for the horrible atrocities inflicted on American POWs as a direct consequence of HER words and HER actions. And I will never forget that - nor will I forgive until she admits that what she did and said was wrong and she apologizes - directly and forthrightly and honestly.

    • @RR-mp7hw
      @RR-mp7hw 6 лет назад +8

      She has apologized for certain actions but held true to her belief that her trip was intended to expose how the US government was lying to its citizens and to help end the war. Many of the stories about her were apocryphal and the horrible atrocities attributed to her actions have been discounted by the soldiers who were supposed to have experienced those atrocities.

      John Daly and Bennett Cerf were very close friends - John delivered the eulogy at Bennett's funeral, and Bennett attended John's son's wedding, etc. On several occasions during WML's run, one or the other would comment on letters they'd received about their teasing each other, and assure the viewers that they were really great friends who just teased each other as guys sometimes do to show their admiration for each other.
