As a trans guy who kinda started exploring my gender because of sewing, your channel is by far my favorite sewing/art channel on here, the energy is perfect. I watch Nicole Rudolph and bernadette banner and all them too (esp nicole bc tailoring! masc/mens clothes!) but I really love your approach to sewing and videomaking
Also you HAVE made me consider getting into larp haha

I am a lady over 50 and I like it when you are you. My boys used to l.a.r.p so I like hearing about it. I prefer people who do different things because I am a person who does various craft stuff, including fabric and yarn hoarding. You be you, I prefer it that way. I am still in the process of watching your past videos. I wish I could help more, but hitting the "like" button and commenting every so often is all I can do right now.

Old lady here, non-LARPer. I watch you because you're interesting and often surprise me. You often give valuable info as an aside when your main idea is about something else. One reason the skirt video was a big hit was that it was low-key, doable and you didn't nitpick over stitching details. Do what you want. You can't please everybody. I recently watched some videos of very chatty, smiley, giggly people that I just suffered through because eventually they got around to showing their projects. I don't expect perfection on RUclips.

I don’t remember how I arrived- but this channel hit so many buttons for this over 65, costumer, crappy sewer, book maker, painter, closet medievalist, LARP LURKER, neuro- spicy, social justice, cat lady. I learned so much from this video. From Colorado Springs, USA, I wish you all well. Thank you for the excellent content Ash.

The main thing that keeps me watching a channel is the personality and the general vibes of the person in front of the camera. The sewing might have been what first drew me in, but I stay because my neurodivergent queer ass feels at home here. Sure I might pay less attention during the LARP videos because I prefer staying inside at a table for my roleplaying, but I'm still a big fan of your whole aesthetic.

My heart is so grateful for this video. ❤ My current teaching career has overwhelmed my feeble attempts at generating content, but I keep hoping. RUclips feels like such a monkeys paw scenario for creators. Like yeah, I'd like to make little videos of me making stuff to show people, that sounds fun! I think your channel is awesome, you are fun to watch, and I, yes, also really loved the skirt video.

  • @vincentbriggs1780
    @vincentbriggs1780 3 месяца назад +1

People don't watch from their subscription pages?? what??? Why?! I almost never look at the home page of youtube, and when I do it's 99% things I've either already seen or have saved to my watch later.
This was interesting to watch! It's neat to hear about other people's audience demographics. Mine's about 30% male, and fairly evenly divided amongst every adult age group. I do get a lot of old lady commenters, but most of them have been nice so far.
I try to make my videos as helpful as I can for people who want to sew the thing, and to keep the pacing decent enough that they're not bored.
I usually come to youtube to find stuff to listen to while working on other stuff, and it's nice to see commenters saying they do that with my videos. I don't think you talk too fast, I like the talking with no big gaps!
I feel quite the opposite about compromising on quality. I'd rather take a longer time to make a video that I'm happy with, especially since I can't go back and change it when it's done. My most popular videos were posted after a month or several of not uploading, so I'm very skeptical about how much the algorithm really cares about upload schedules. I think the more important thing is how many people watch it all the way to the end.
I'm a lot slower to make stuff, but I have gotten to 16k subs with just 13 videos, which I think is pretty good.
One of my favourite videos on youtube stuff is "Influencer Courses Are Garbage" by Super Eyepatch Wolf, which is very long and interesting, and he interviewed a bunch of people from many different channels of different sizes.
I think my best piece of youtube advice is to take note of things that annoy or bore you in other people's videos, and avoid doing them.

Hmm, I won't be starting my own channel any time ever then...
I like channels that go deep into the escapism and aesthetic part of their creativity. It's lovely to dive into those videos for cosy feels, but I really appreciate your style that's far more grounded and doesn't hide from deeper issues about "making stuff" - like the expense, the environmental effects, meeting personal and emotional needs, and the social aspects of interacting and being part of creative communities. You've got a really interesting thing going on here. Thanks for everything so far 😊

  • @xingcat

I had a channel for about 5 years, most of which, I made 3 videos per week that were super labor-intensive, including building and sewing my own puppets, making props, using green screens, and cooking recipes(!!!!) and never really got any traction, until I took a "hiatus" that lasted since 2019. It can be super exhausting and requires so much work.
I only ever sewed for puppets, and got recommended a lot of sewing channels whenever I'd sew on a livestream or something, and you came after that second wave of recommendations. I love BB and Nicole Rudolph, Sewstine, The Stitchery, Rachael Maksy, etc., and a lot of y'all have such different vibes. Lots of my friends are LARPers, so I'm familiar of what you do when you talk about that, but I don't love hanging around outside, LOL. I really appreciate this long-form video about your experience on this platform. Maybe I'll pick up my channel again someday.

Really interesting video. I'm sort of, maybe, possibly, considering starting a flosstube (cross stitch based) channel. But as a ND, middle aged woman from Burnley, Lancashire, I don't know. My voice, my style, my outlook... not exactly mainstream friendly, even among other flosstubers.
As for your channel, I love it. I agree, it's the person rather than the content that keeps me engaged with a video/channel, and you do that. It's great to see queer, ND, nerdy representation. It takes a lot of bravery to put yourself in such a public arena, for such little reward

As a non-binary person learning to sew who online rps, your videos have truly been a breath of fresh air for me. It aligns so much more with what I want out of sewing channels and I think you have a really engaging personality. With so much of sewing being so heavily gendered, I get a bit exhausted by other channels that are all hyper femme all the time. (Happy for those people to live in a way that makes them happy, but it's not who I am or what I'm trying to learn.) Your videos are an instant click for me anytime (but I am also a diehard subscription tab in reverse chronological order person).

You are obviously well educated and are extremely articulate. I'm not drawn to some of your content, but, as you quite rightly said, I watch because I enjoy the presentation. On a personal note, I truly empathise with you with regard to the attitudes of some people because you are trans. I actually came across the other way, from LARPing, (I do watch a lot of other sewing/crafting content as well though) ive had some failed attempts at creating youtube videos and channels, and inevitably ADHDed out, usually at the editing stage. I think your point about needing a very high number of ideas is really insightful, as my LARP channel basically sputtered out fully during Lockdown when I didnt have event reviews/vlogs and had exhausted the 5 - 10 intro what is LARP, how to design a costume, character etc guides I could think of that might fill out the gap.

Thank you for making a realistic video of what quite frankly significant success could look like. I have started my own channel for weaving, I’m thoroughly in the my video suck. You’re only going to get better by posting more stage, but I’m learning more each time. I am epically struggling with the whole video, editing aspect, but it’s really hard to find instructional material on how to edit crafting videos. Almost all of the videos that I have posted are a subprocess of the weaving or a loom reveal video, which is one to five minutes long and the five minutes is quite an outlier. It is challenging to strive for the quantity of watch hours given how many views you need to have on a five minute video to make even one hour and that’s assuming they watch the whole video, which they don’t. Thank you for sharing this inspirational but at the same time sobering look at reality of this choice. It’s much appreciated.

It’s really been helpful to follow along with you. i’m glad you have the patience to do all this work. My primary sewing goal is to make some of my own clothing just ordinary bits and pieces to mix and match for day to day wear. I think the part of your work that helps me is the finishing details that help a garment be as adaptable and wearable and as comfortable as is practicable. Something that wouldn’t be comfortable as a costume wouldn’t work as a daily garment either but I’m not sure how much over there is with those subsets.
Pockets are essential ! Thanks again and have a beautiful day.

Millennial lady here who doesn't LARP, but is fascinated by it :P I like your channel for the sewing/creating + funny jokes and British humor + historical costumes/dress up + fantasy costumes/dress up. You are a perfect addition to the row of historical costume RUclipsrs and the ones that add humor. I also watch Micarah Tewers, I can't even describe her niche, it's like "sewing" + dress up + humor? But you are your own brand of this creative niche that is just a very good addition to the bunch, and it's nice and fun to watch :D
It's amazing how many (middle aged?) people don't understand that they can; Pause a video, speed up or slow it down, can stop watching whenever, have autonomy of what they want to watch, stop the autoplay etc.... :P Then they get angry at YT and blame the creator or something. YT should add a 15 sec. video to every video as an opening for every person of 50+ years of the basic functions in the video or something to prevent this hahaha :P

i am one of the amazing people that enjoy YOU . i am not a stickler for quality. I have watched enough of your content to gauge your broad interests and i know im going to enjoy anything you put out. Even if its a topic i dont care about, I'm sure that you could present it in a way that i like - because i like your content style.
And i heavily agree that more people need to get into LARP as its one of the funnest things ive (semi) recently gotten into!

I'm a 60+ female, I guess described as one of the conservative ones. I don't remember where or how in your process l found you but I'm glad I did. I appreciate your intelligent, thought out content, your dry wit, and your willingness to be real. Yes, some content isn't my ideal but you seem to make everything informative and entertaining. I'm so sad that people think they have the right to judge you at such a personal level. Someone once told me those kind of comments say more about the speaker of them than the subject of them - mean-spirited, judgmental, envious, and very afraid.
And, yes, why would people not be on Subscription tab? Makes no sense to me either! 😊

Fantastic video, there are so many points and aspects I could comment on but I've not got the time as I too need to go and edit something. Instead I will say (again) that I love your curtains and would like to turn them into bags. I would also hang out with you and wear my nicest frock, it's got monsters on it. Have a lovely week.

The skirt video was how I found you. I still go back to it when sewing sometimes. I did not subscribe immediately, I like to get a feel for a channel first. I am not into LARP, but love creativity and you are clever and creative and have fun with what you do.

I have never stopped a video to make a comment lol but here goes:
I am one of the people who came to your content from the petticoat skirt vid and I do watch Bernadette Banner and Nicole Rudolph but what I’ve been looking for in sewing content has truly always been you, darling, you. The other folks are precise and historical but the chaos and reality of the way you construct garments makes much more sense for my aesthetics, politics, budget, etc.
I’m not a LARPer even a little. I’m just a queer gremlin mom (both senses of the phrase to be clear) who likes to know more about the breadth of a thing than most hobbyists do. So I cast a net wide and occasionally I find a channel that contains what I didn’t even know I was looking for. ❤️

I watch Bernadette and similar channels sometimes, but your style of videos is much closer to me. I am not into sewing much, but I like watching people craft and like your humor. Also I think your talking videos like transphobia in costuming and evermore are really well done and interesting for a wider audience.

I'd like to pop in and say that you are indeed tonally different and visibly queer-er than all the sewing channels you listed around 23:00... I watch those channels, too... and yours is my preference (because of both tone and queerness.)

Ash, I owe your videos credit getting me on the road to making my *very first* fem clothing experiments. Im 6'2" and 200 pounds... Really tough getting clothes that fit regardless of what department i explore. But also your work gives me permission to follow along and make things and make mistakes. Do it wrong, have a good time.
I DID find your skirt vid first, but i do try to regularly watch your other stuff. In fact, i didn't even realize that i wasn't subscribed till now.

I think I first came from Benadette Banner's channel, looking for more crafty-youtuby-things. And the fact that you're not the same is exactly what I enjoyed. I have ADHD, I need the diversity. I loved your voice, I can understand why some people might dislike it, but overall you have a distinct and quite unique voice and my brain loves that (when people try their best to have the most normalized voice and accent, like on our national TV here (France), where they kinda, sort of, just train to all speak "the same way" it just confuses my brain because I can't tell them apart). Also I've done many roleplaying so the larp part is fascinating, and I occasionaly sew so the sewing part is fascinating. And I'm queer and neurodivergent, so everything just managed to fit perfectly for me to enjoy your content.
About that, I wont say a word for anything I don't know about, like the technical differences between softwares, but everything you said, as far as I know, I relate, I understand and I agree. About the community management, about what you do and why you do it. About how much time it takes to produce a video especially if you're employed on the side.
Anyway. A long comment full of words and I didn't say much at all. Just please continue to exist as you want to, and I'll be happy about it. ♥

I am one of those people who watch Bernadette &tc. But I am HERE because your videos have given me the confidence to sew a garment myself in over 15 years. I even sort of made the pattern myself based on a extant dress! Also because of the visibly queer bit. I also love the entertainment-sewing vids to acompany me when I'm handsewing.

Holy that’s a lot of work! I’m really glad you’re sticking around even when it’s very much work! Your videos are fun.
While I am a cranky old woman I try not to be mean in the comments. I enjoy your content and your take on things. It really blows me away that someone would comment on your accent…. Some people have to get lives!! But then I was once asked what my first language was!?! I have weird phrases and phrasing so they assumed then argued! I’m also dyslexic so sometimes things come out backwards or two words get massed together. I’m weird and know it
Really you do your thing and I’ll watch. Oh and I appreciate all your hard work!

Anyways, thanks for the insights and over one hour entertainment while I was knitting.

I don't remember when I first started watching your content, but it may have been around the speedrun time, and have been subscribed ever since. (I don't know how your Gothic Cathedral gown is not a runaway success, I love that one so much!.)
I tend to watch everything the channels I subscribe to put out--even when I know I won't care about it--because that means income for them, and that money allows/incentivizes them to keep making content. (In other words: artists need to eat, and since I can't support them all with money, the very least I can do is provide my attention)
Trend-jacking: all the "pirate shirt" that aren't quite; all the "secret pant skirt", and so on and so forth. And yet, it's fun for me when more than one person I follow grab that thing and run with it, because each of them will give it their own unique spin--which is why I follow them to begin with.
For me, with notable exceptions (this video, for example), the sweet spot is somewhere in the 25 to 40 minutes length, and often wish that some longer videos were split at the natural point (there's usually at least one of those) into two or more installments. I feel this would increase the "watched to the end" ratio and also, more content/more frequency for the price/effort/time/cost of making one--but of course, I don't have a channel, and therefore don't know if that's how this thing actually works. The only advice I've seen everyone say is pertinent is the "upload videos regularly, at least once week if possible"; everything else is, "this is what has worked for me (before/so far)"

I've been watching your videos since the video you posted for CoSy 2020 (ie the good CoSy before the problems) it was something about creating your own fantasy aesthetic. I really connected with your approach to projects then and still find it grounding now. I'm just grateful you are still making videos as so may youtubers have stopped.
I have my own channel centered around making that I started three years ago (not this one lol). I stopped posting for the last 10 months because I was wrapping up grad school and that was its own shit show. It's no joke that YouTubing is a lot of work. I've been considering starting back up again now that I have a somewhat stable job. This was just the video I needed to kickstart that plan. I have a lot of backlog of editing for projects I finished but never edited. Now I just have to figure out if I ditch the previous footage for now and start fresh, or work through it chronologically.

The 18th century petticoat was my first sewing project so I’m sad that you cop so much flak for it! I found that I suck at following instructional videos unless they’re very specific like French seam pockets which I also need to look up the same video for every time, so sewing content is more for my inspiration and general reference.
I don’t think I can be converted to larping but I love the content!! I think I’ve watched the evermore video at least 3 times in the last month while sewing 😅 Your storytelling just brings me joy

Yes absolutely they do! And it depends entirely on what kind of larp you want to get into - you need a bit of speed and endurance if you want to get into combat, or play many (but not all) horror games, but if you don’t there’s still lots of options for mostly standing around talking to people

I present as the image of Middle England. I speak (mostly) RP, I'm middle aged, I'm as white as can be, I am plump and bespectacled and have grey hair. It's terrifying how many people assume I'm their ally. The words and thoughts and opinions which leave their mouths because they have decided based on just my appearance that I will agree horrifies me.
The slurs that get shared to me make me angry. I'm so sad that you are getting them thrown at yo.

Another miserable 69 year old lady here. I don't larp but have friends that do. I would love to make larp costumes but that isn't why I watch your channel religiously! I watch for two reasons; I just plain enjoy watching, you are real and interesting, and I watch because it helps me learn more about the thoughts of someone with a different lifestyle than mine. I have learned so much from you! I have been sewing for more than 50 years, I doubt you can teach me anything there but really appreciate your honesty and openness about yourself and your experiences. Just wanted you to know that there is at least one person watching every single on of your videos just because if you lived next door we would be great friends.
