You can see the live version Lynyrd Skynyrd “Freebird live at Oakland Coliseum “. They definitely put on a show! One of my favorite bands....of all time!
Fantastic song and one of the best guitar solos ever. Surprised you didn't show the live video of this song at the same concert. One of the better videos of the song.
This is a legendary concert, and for those of us who know in real time the tragedy that will follow immediately after this, it is a song that resonates in our hearts. And this song itself is also a song about a man's painful desire. "I'm free to fly, no one can hold me back" It's a song about such a sad dream. The chord progression consists of the reverse version of Derek & Dominos's (Eric Clapton) famous Layla.
Great reaction. I saw them live at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium in June 1977. The lineup that day was J. Giles Band, Dicky Betts & Great Southern, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the headliner was Peter Frampton. I will never forget that day.
Never gets old...just time does. I was 15 in school and heard on the radio about the plane going down in October '77 and losing RVZ and Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines and the few survivors of LS band. A day that was completely devastating then and near 50 years later still has the sadness and loss of one of he greatest bands ever, front man RVZ and what more would of they accomplished of great music and did in their short 5 years of peak music till that damn plane went down. Livelonglovelife and Skynyrd to go along in it!!!
Remember riding with some high school buds in a old PU truck that one of them owned, going to lunch. The owner of the truck only had one 8-track tape of this album and we always listened to Free Bird. Circa 1977. Good times.
Ronnie Van Zant lead vocals, Steve Gaines guitar and his sister Cassie Gaines back up singer died on that horrific day, also their road manager Dean Kilpatrick and both pilots were taken as well. Great Band, Thanks for the Reaction.
I was actually at this show, and true story 5 months later I saw Queen for the first time. Yes to get the whole feel, the live video is amazing. What really sucked is Peter Frampton had to follow this. The volume back then left your ears ringing. This was loud!!! Sweet Home Alabama from the same show and is the best version I have heard
There's a video version of them doing this in London, opening for the Stones.I like it even more than the video of this show. Because there, the crowd had no idea what they were in for, and was just chilling when the song began. But by the end............
They lost 3 band members in the plane crash, Steve Gaines(guitarist), Cassie Gaines(backup singer and Steve's older sister), and lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. Also, two pilots and an assistant road manager died.
Ronnie Van Zant always said he would never live until age thirty....and he was right, unfortunately. Top five band all time for me. Iconic track of the 1970's.
I've gone to tons of concerts in my lifetime. Lynyrd Skynyrd is definitely one that I wish I would of seen perform. Joel Blankenbiller Stowe Pennsylvania
I have to agree with other commenters on here that watching them perform this song "Live" is much better with the crowd reactions, the atmosphere of the 70's and how talented the band was. Either performance at the Oakland Coliseum in 1977 or the 1976 Kebworth concert in London.
That original band is a HoF outfit if I ever heard, one of the defining groups in that genre. Nice one, great live version, also hear/see as there are some video of this live as well, worth hunting down. Also, the version you need on your phone is the original Masterpiece, with the pristine mix and perfect guitar interplay, search for original audio from their first album. You should also try some Allman Brothers, Whipping Post off their great debut album is the place to start. Nice as always my dear, looking awesome and brightening my day, Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶
Hadn't been on your channel for awhile and honestly I haven't been on too many cuz I've been working so much but it's wonderful to see you again doing your thing. This is pretty iconic and it was interesting to see your body language along with it. I'm glad you do that. As a musician, I'm always looking for people that dance when I play live and I've been blessed enough that that's usually the case. And so is so cool that you were late to it on that level as well as intellectually. Great channel for sure.
I like you and long ago Subscribed. This is my 33rd Reaction to this and I am so disappointed we did not see the fantastic crowd scenes that totally helped to make this a unique experience. What happened, please?
The place crash took 2 of the 7 core band members and 1 of the 3 background singers. So at most could say 40% of band lost to the crash. Saw LS in 1974 at Ozark Music Festival in Sedalia Missouri and again in 1976 World Series Of Rock outside Chicago. On that bill was Yes, Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Gary Wright.
Lead singer Ronnie VanZant said he wouldn’t live to be 30 his Dad would say don’t say that !! I’ve been to plane crash site way out in sticks in Mississippi , they’ve raised 3 beautiful monuments to the Band it’s really a peaceful place ! And actually met a few of The people Who lived in the countryside who rescued the survivors !!
Ronnie had a sort of premonition of his death. He used to say that he knew he was gonna die "with his boots on", meaning on the road touring, which he did. Coincidence or not, his lyrics do carry the weight of that meaning now.
The picture you're showing is an older one, and there were a few changes to the band prior to the Oakland concert. Both Bob Burns (the one right in the middle) and Ed King (far right) had left and were replaced by Artemis Pyle (drummer) and Steve Gaines (third guitar).
They were the last band of many when I saw them at Anaheim stadium about a month before the plane crash. I have several memories of the day including being on the 2nd deck as it was bouncing up and down a lot to this song. It made me wonder if it would hold up.
im sorry you must watch the live version its incredible unbeleivable please your reaction will be orr the charts please just this once your be glad you did
I've heard many live versions of this EPIC MASTERPIECE, but this has to be the BEST VERSION I've ever heard! Does anyone know what album this version is on?
Not sure if it is true but rumor has it that their performance of this on Gold and Platinum was from their last show and last song on stage before getting in the plane.
My father's side is from down South. For us, LS is not music, it's culture. This is real, due to the harshness of the Civil War and the Depression, the Southern economy never really recovered till the 1980's. Lot's of men, including my Grandpa and his brothers, had to roam to get employment if they could get much at all. Many were hobos that rode the rails, and worked temp and seasonal jobs where they could get them. After that experience many men simply couldn't settle down, always looking for the next thing around the corner. Grandpa never really did, even after I came along. Every time I hear this song it's always for him.
God,everytime I hear this song I think about how this talent was taken from us 😞......do you know what happend they forgot to fuel up the plane, the plane actually ran out of fuel 🤦🏻♂️😪
As a Skynyrd virgin you should've watched the concert video. This reaction shows me that you liked it but are not a big electric guitar fan since it is probably the greatest guitar solo of all time. Since I was a kid at the end of the year on KISW in Seattle it was this or Stairway to Heaven that was selected as #1 every year. Oh, Ronnie had a conversation with his dad a few years before and told him that he knew he wouldn't live to age 30. I think he ended up dying about three months before he turned 30.
Sweet Home Alabama is another masterpiece of theirs! Too bad for the loss of one their members! Southern rock at its best, just like The Alman Brothers! So long!
Great Reaction Angela as Always!! Hello from New Hampshire U.S.A.. Rock On!!😘😍😎💯💥🤘👋... You Really Need to Check out the Live Version though!! It'll give you a better idea of How Great they were!! IMHO,Lol
I am a huge Zep and Sabbath fan but I dont think they did anything to match the guitar work on this amazing track.. Back in the late 70's in UK we used to spontaneously all start singing this in the pubs if it came on the jukebox, It was an absolutely beautiful thin because everyone knew the words.
Well this is a RUclips first. The LIVE version without the LIVE pictures? You can't even see the 4 Guitars all playing,in a line, which are part of the fun of watching this?
I know this has nothing to do with this song but I really think that you would enjoy this singer. Amanda Marshall is a Canadian singer who had a string of hits in the late 90's into the early 2000's. I think you should listen to one song in particular called '' Let it Rain '' . There are other songs but this one really shows her vocal power and I think it will want you to listen to other songs of hers. I hope you give it a try, you won't be sorry disappointed disappointed disappointed
Angela - You make every song better because of your beautiful spirit. We all are going to like one song over another one. There are literally hundreds of songs that talk about a free spirit. I only watched this video because of you. When you reacted to Time In A Bottle, I thought of Jim Croce's wife & child. And the same goes for Otis Redding, Buddy Holly who only lived to be 22 I think. And many more. So, this song to me is too long and over played in it's time. But I feel for the families of these guys that died.
Made it to 45 seconds realize you were going for a live audio only. That's a no-go everyone else is able to watch the live version don't know why you think you can't watch the live version the video you'll enjoy it better and we will enjoy it better watching you react to it. Thanks anyway
This is one where watching the video really gives you respect for what they did and the energy they brought.
Plus you get to see us boomers digging it as teenagers.
The live one most people go for has an awfully low sound, though. You can barely hear the song...

"I'm free to fly, no one can hold me back"
It's a song about such a sad dream. The chord progression consists of the reverse version of Derek & Dominos's (Eric Clapton) famous Layla.
Was there and was blown away
This is definitely one of the all time great songs from the 70’s, like an anthem right up there with Stairway to Heaven
This was their gift to mankind just before their plane crashed.
Great reaction. I saw them live at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium in June 1977. The lineup that day was J. Giles Band, Dicky Betts & Great Southern, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the headliner was Peter Frampton. I will never forget that day.
Someone called this the ultimate "it's not you, it's me" song
Never gets old...just time does. I was 15 in school and heard on the radio about the plane going down in October '77 and losing RVZ and Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines and the few survivors of LS band. Southern rock at it's finest, seen last concert in Greenville south Carolina .
Wish you would have watched the Live video performance of this when they were opening for the Stones in England. They won the crowd over !
Ronnie Van Zant lead vocals, Steve Gaines guitar and his sister Cassie Gaines back up singer died on that horrific day, also their road manager Dean Kilpatrick and both pilots were taken as well.
Great Band, Thanks for the Reaction.
It was 3 mos later
I was actually at this show, and true story 5 months later I saw Queen for the first time. Yes to get the whole feel, the live video is amazing. What really sucked is Peter Frampton had to follow this. The volume back then left your ears ringing. This was loud!!! Sweet Home Alabama from the same show and is the best version I have heard
A classic. One of their best. It was the most requested song when I was overseas in the Marines in 77-78.
This song has the Greatest Guitar Solo Ever
There's a video version of them doing this in London, opening for the Stones.I like it even more than the video of this show. Because there, the crowd had no idea what they were in for, and was just chilling when the song began. But by the end............
enjoyed your reaction greatly what an experience rip lynyrd greatly missed
Sadly Lynyrd Skynyrd have 13 band members who have passed on. Meaning, even some of the replacement musicians have died. RIP.
They lost 3 band members in the plane crash, Steve Gaines(guitarist), Cassie Gaines(backup singer and Steve's older sister), and lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. Also, two pilots and an assistant road manager died.
Thanks for your reaction to Free Bird. Other great songs to react to by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Call Me The Breeze, Gimme three steps, & Simple Man.
Gary D
Saw them in "76",BEST LIVE SHOW EVER !!! Saw them as the Rossington Collins Band in 1980 !! 2nd BEST LIVE SHOW EVER FOR ME!! 🐐🎸🔥🔥🔥😍😁 !!!!!
I was lucky to see them at Winterland San Francisco in 1976 also. Incredible. Outlaws and Marshall Tucker opened.
You're my favorite ❣️ thank you for reacting to the song it's one of my favorite'groups!!!
Ronnie Van Zant always said he would never live until age thirty....and he was right, unfortunately. Top five band all time for me. Iconic track of the 1970's.
Top 5. No Doubt
I've gone to tons of concerts in my lifetime. Lynyrd Skynyrd is definitely one that I wish I would of seen perform.

Some of the most epic solos in history.
This is one of those songs that will get you a speeding ticket
I have to agree with other commenters on here that watching them perform this song "Live" is much better with the crowd reactions, the atmosphere of the 70's and how talented the band was.
Either performance at the Oakland Coliseum in 1977 or the 1976 Kebworth concert in London.
The opening lines of the song are something Allen Collins' girlfriend said to him in an argument. They got married in 1970, they were both 18.
That original band is a HoF outfit if I ever heard, one of the defining groups in that genre. Agreed, original version, best quality available for the phone.

Classic Southern Rock Song Seen them Live 1976 Nassau Coliseum Free Bird best encore ive ever seen live
I saw them in Chicago stadium 1977 with ted nugget REO journey and38 special all for $15
Stairway to heaven and free bird 🕊️ were number on the carts as best rock songs of all time ❤
High in the rank of the great American songbook. One of my favorite things is the bird sounds Gary Rossington does in two places in the song.
Great reaction thanks greetings from Costa Rica
I like you and long ago Subscribed.
This is my 33rd Reaction to this and I am so disappointed we did not see the fantastic crowd scenes that totally helped to make this a unique experience.
What happened, please?
Great choice, but it's better to actually see the live performance
The song is one of the Classic. The music is great to drive your car with and dream along too.
The place crash took 2 of the 7 core band members and 1 of the 3 background singers. So at most could say 40% of band lost to the crash. Think of an adjective and that describes that guitar solo! Lol..iconic.. they will always be remembered for Free Bird.😅
Yes sir Ronnie we still remember you…
If this is the concert from the Oakland Coliseum, you're in for a treat!
The video a must watch
The picture you're showing is an older one, and there were a few changes to the band prior to the Oakland concert. Both Bob Burns (the one right in the middle) and Ed King (far right) had left and were replaced by Artemis Pyle (drummer) and Steve Gaines (third guitar).
That was their Bohemain Rhapsody.

Rockin' Good Time!!!!!!!!
And that young lady is how it's done. 8).
im sorry you must watch the live version its incredible unbeleivable please your reaction will be orr the charts please just this once your be glad you did
maybe....the best "slide guitar riff" in all musics of rock roll all time , in my opinion
Eva Cassidy - "Over The rainbow"
This now always reminds me of the end of "The devils Rejects"
I've heard many live versions of this EPIC MASTERPIECE, but this has to be the BEST VERSION I've ever heard!
Does anyone know what album this version is on?
Awesome ! This is my most fave song EVERRRRRRRRR !
There are three guitars playing this solo.
Not sure if it is true but rumor has it that their performance of this on Gold and Platinum was from their last show and last song on stage before getting in the plane.
You've gotta see the video with this!!!

Should have watched the live version.
It's Freebird!!... There's ALWAYS more!!! A voluminous cacophony!
IMHO,Lol
Was there ever a guitar tandem as great as Rossington and Collins, I don't know?
If you are in your mid 50s & your family was into nascar there is a good chance when you were little you thought this song was the national anthem
Great song
Need to do live in oakland.
This song was released in 1973, this performance was 1977
must see guitar solo dont miss out
GOAT.
Iconic guitar riff took me back to another life. You might enjoy Helen Reddy "I don't know how to love him." You might give it a listen.
Play it pretty for Oakland....Summer 77

You can't even see the 4 Guitars all playing,in a line, which are part of the fun of watching this?
MISS THE AGE OF THE ANTHEM ROCK SONG IT WAS EVERY BIG BANDS OF THE SEVENTIES LOVE LETTER TO THEIR FANS
Have to give credit to the bass player Ed King, as he is also jammin during this song!
Ed King left the band 2 years before this concert.. That's Leon Wilkeson on bass.
You are phenomenal.
You really should have done the live video to get the full experience.
Good song with that amazing guitar solo, although fans are a bit distracting on this. Love their Sweet home Alabama.
Wow!

If you can't get into Skynyrd, I dunno wat I'm doing here.
I can't wait to see your face at the transition. There are better versions

I don't know what's wrong with me but I like the studio version better thx
Yes,who needs to see all those Beautiful Californian Women accompanying this at Oakland:)
