You shouldn't only apply to jobs where you meet 100% of the requirements. That's just not realistic. If you meet most of them you should still apply.

As always, Andrew makes excellent points. I completely agree with the need to pick up the phone and how to answer in a way to form a good impression. The only part that I slightly disagree with is in looking over the requirements before submitting a résumé. Realistically , it is difficult to find a person who perfectly matches every requirement. In my experience as an IT Director when I hired someone I would look at their qualifications and see if it matched up with about 85 to 90% of the requirements. With any new job, there is going to be some measure of learning curve. What an employer is looking for is someone that can hit the ground running in a short amount of time and a relatively small learning curve but there is almost never a person that can come into a new job and have all the qualifications on day one. I’m sure Andrew is meaning something similar to these comments where the gist of his point is just to make sure that before you submit a résumé generally you match up with the requirements.

agree with @jamesglover1 on all this points (James) listed. It is wholly unrealistic for an employer, direct-client, recruitment firm to seek essentially a "perfect candidate" that matches exactly 100% of the job requirements (meaning education, degree or certifications, usage of 1 unique specific tool(s)) as each firm (large corporate entity or small/nid-size firm). Much talent, time, money and lost opportunity (especially on client side) is lost with this approach- my project contracts have been exclusive to the US - in this country, it's a know failed approach. If this recruiting approach is successful as a general practice in other countries i'd be very suprised at its success

Andrew thanks a lot for this video. This morning I received an email notifying me that I didn't get a role that I was so excited about, and your video is helping me get back on track and talk to myself in a positive way, since I don't do any of the negatives that you mentioned :) yikes there can be worse !!.....as for not picking up the phone, I do have an app that scans spoofers etc, so what I do is that I always look at the area code of the recruiter when emailing, so that way I know that first the app will not scan it as bad, and second the area code will be familiar, and of course I respond happy and knowing who it is. As for not having a voicemail greeting recorded, I was victim of identity theft this year, and so I avoid giving too much info of me to people that currently could be seeking to get back into getting more info about me, even though I have everything frozen, I feel like one never knows, but I do try my ways and they have worked so far.......and yes please keep the videos on the subject coming!

Love this video, as a past employer myself I can relate and agree to everything you said with one exception… depending on who the employer is, the job requirements are sometimes a wish list vs actual requirements. Many times employers have difficulties getting applicants as the “requirements” can be quite onerous and too specific, especially when it comes to knowing certain types of software. Software exists out there by different developers that can do the exact same job such as MS project. If an applicant has some knowledge and experience with another relevant PM software I would as an employer prioritize interviewing those that meet my requirements, and also want to have applicants that mostly meet my requirements as alternatives just in case there is no one who is fully meeting my list of qualifications. Would like to see a follow up video Andrew!

    Hi Andrew,
I agree to a certain extent. Meeting the qualifications is important but also companies are asking for a minimum of 3 years of experience in a specific area of project management (IT, construction, medical) for entry level project management positions along with a project management certification. Any recommendations on how to break into a role that may not be as specific?

It is rare that the hiring manager sees your resume. Even when you are qualified it goes through AI, and HR first. They are looking for specific key words and experience levels…. In the correct format.
I am a Systems Administrator, with all the certs, and over 50 applications over the last 6 months, I have been rejected initially 47 times. 3 times I got to the next level and then turned down, for a lateral move.
Locally, I have handed my resume to 2 companies, no AI… got interview and competitive offers for both jobs.
It’s the hiring process ON TOP of the points you made.

@@TheeGirl45... I’m just saying that it’s easier if you can find companies that do review your resume without AI. Smaller businesses that don’t use 3rd party are so much better at reviewing your resume.
It takes some time to find them but they are out there.

Teach ChatGPT your writing style first.

well one thing companies has flaws is they hiring people wants a fresh graduate but with 5 years of experience, and yet the pay is meager. I must say companies must hire people who have guts to do the work rather than having 100 certificates but is a slacker.

Recruiters should also be lenient with applicants, most times people send out 100s of applications and you expect applicants to remember every company they applied to. how fair is that?? How one responds is key but forgive me if i apply to your company 1 year ago and you are reaching out to me a year after asking me if i applied to your company....alot has happened in a year.... how am i supposed to remember your company?
