Artie was sooo damned fluid in his playing. I agree with those who think he had a bit of an edge on Benny Goodman (although it's really a "Pick 'em" situation between them). He was easily bored, though, and quite restless. He gave many a great, honest interview as a senior. You can't get this kind of swing now. There was so much money in swing in the '30's and '40s that the big bands could hire the best musicians, and kids all over the country could dance to incredible bands live in the many ballrooms.

Rightly remembered for his marvelous clarinet playing, Shaw's band was an early precursor of the big beat: bass drum and guitar welded into a beat that was far forward for its time.

Bands just swing harder when they can see the dancers! What a recording too.

They just swing hard, cause that's what the world needs. If you pick up a horn and there's a solid four, nobody needs anything more!

What a classic! Artie Shaw at his best. I'm so glad this was recorded and is over 5 minutes long, pretty unusual for a jazz tune. Truly a shame that Shaw kept breaking up his bands and had no patience for the business side of music. We could've had a lot more music from him. Technically, he was superior to Benny Goodman. But it's fun to compare the two. His clarinet playing here is brilliant!

From the Cafe Rouge of the Hotel Pennsylvania (soon to be torn down; after all, this is America - it’s old, so it must be torn down).
Artie always wanted to record it but it ran five minutes and he couldn’t figure where to cut it - so it was never recorded.
Buddy, of course, driving the band.

fyi-this tune & others by this artie shaw band as well as the 1938 group are available on a 3 cd set of airchecks by hindsight-the same tunes on 3 lp vinyl ALSO have the intros by the radio broadcast emcee & some conversations with artie himself=good stuff. the guys had no idea these were being recorded & the airchecks are just so spontaneous compared to the studio recordings.

I've got the vinyl 3 record set and cherish it. With the liner notes for the announcer, too.

`10-20-1939 - Is the original date of this broadcast. Did they ever think that people would still be listening 75 years later?

This date was a month before i was born, 12-26-1939. I wonder if my mom was listening to this on the original date? I have always loved Artie Shaw.

In 1939 Artie in fact outplayed any band with it's life recordings. Lunceford was past it's best period, Ellington was in a dip, but made a great comeback a year later with the addition of Blanton and Webster. Basie could swing well but didn't have the finesse in the arrangements that Shaw had. And Buddy Rich was the best in the business as was Shaw as a clarinet player
