    Like the gear driven cam instead of belt or chain driven cams.

    I have a crosley tin block put into my Economy Power King. Never had it apart. Runs beautiful!

    Fascinating engine, thanks for putting this up to share. FWIW, always use distilled water in these and other engines to keep sediments from accumulating. A major part of my working career was as a motorcycle tech and when the Suzuki 750cc triple came out, we were instructed to use distilled water in them, no exceptions. The radiators were small and relatively delicate and any corrosive elements were to be avoided. I hope you have success with your project, it doesn't look too bad at this point.

    i wish i still have the rod and pistons that burke crofton gave me from were he took two motors and put them back to back to make a flat 8 he was a smart ol bird i spent two days at is place up in the back country of san diego doing some work for him he was a diesel man had a yard full of old old one cly. diesel motors

    Very interesting, especially since I have never even seen a Crosley. Those stamped jam nuts on the rod caps are certainly unusual.

    I got everything for a 52 crosley. I think the motor was rebuilt came with a crate in the back. The motor is really clean cam and gears look new.

    I believe the 85hp Bearcat had a Coventry Climax engine in it.

    If you’re wanting to build a running engine, that crankcase is highly not recommended, no filler tube to vent the crankcase. Engine will leak horribly. Crosley’s are known for that anyway. I own several cars and have tons of videos on my channel Crosley related if you care to take a look. I just loaded a video on assembling a motor.

    My Dad had the sports car model and the station wagon. He told me that the crankshafts were prone to breaking. That engine the way the cylinders come off are similar to an aircraft engine except the jugs came off independently.

    The Homelite 4 cycle outboard in the 1960's was based on this motor. Allot of similarities with the block I remember.

      Yeah they squeaked around 55 hp out of them. Very interesting design.

      i saw one at a thrift store about 30 years ago i did some work for burke crofton he was a vary interesting guy the cover for that motor was made from the cover turkey tray burke told me that the cost of having one stamped out was nuts and that him and his wife was in may co. just before thanksgiving and he saw one know that was it so he talk to the salesman and got the info of who made it and got the maker to sale him just the cover before they punched the 4 holes at the ends for the handle rivets i could go on about crofton he was a smarts old bird his story's about Fageol you could make a movie about

    I have a full crosley Ciba chassis, that some guy give me it says 1958 no motor or transmission thanks for real life illustration breaking it down

      Crosley went out of the car business in 1952, so if it says 1958, it's not a genuine Crosley chassis.

      @@Ron-0417 sorry I meant 48, and it's original have title from another state, it was a small firetruck 4cylinder 3spd transmission, most likely used for hay rides until the guy I got it from grandson car caught fire from a nearby bush and destroyed his car and chain reacted to the little red truck that could, the grandfather made a deal with me to have it, it was no skin all bones(chassis), so there you have it .

    You ever do valve seals on one of these? I have a homelite outboard that uses a crosley engine and need to do valve seals. Although I may do a full rebuild on one of them if I can find the parts.

      Hi, no I've never really messed with one of these until this video. Wouldn't think it would be all that bad though. I know the later engines like yours had many updates..

      We ( father bought ) had two of these Homelite outboards bought new in the 1960's. One threw a rod in the 70's, and the other one we transferred the head to the long shaft engine that threw the rod. I think, we later sold the good engine and kept the other one for parts which was a short shaft and the damaged block. There are still some parts around from the block .....maybe. I haven't looked in a long time. I do remember seeing the gear driven overhead cam. The valve springs and stems were covered by a steel cylinder. This engine was a wonderfully designed and well built long lasting little 4 cycle engine with 55 hp at 5500 rpm. It was made at a time when 2 cycles were the king, and well before it's time. It would flourish now.

    looks like an elgin boat motor ? are they the same give/or take ?

      I'm not sure about that. After Crosley sold the rights to the engines. Homelite, and Fisher Peirce made a much larger displacement boat motor from it.

    I just bought a '51 Super Wagon and it looks as though it may need a ring job, at a minimum.

      The rings on these pistons are completely shot as well. The pistons look perfect though. I'm going to try and shove all of the good parts into a non leaky tin block.

    Have you ever done a tear down on a Crosley generator motor and removed the spacer?

      I just rebuilt my Generator yesterday. What do you mean by the spacer? Are you talking about the water-pump coupling. Or something internal?

      Thanks for the reply. I'm talking about the modification that has to be done to the generator motor so it can run a car. My limited understanding is that a spacer was inserted between the crankcase and block to lower compression to allow the generator motor to run on crappy gas. This reduces the horsepower from 27 to about 21. The spacer has to be removed in order to restore the horsepower.

      @@williampaxton871 Ok, I understand. For some reason i thought you were talking about the electrical generator from the car. Yes I believe they have a spacer, that can be removed. They also have a belt driven magneto on some models that will not work well for automobiles. On the plus side, they have a steel(or at least a much harder) crankshaft....
