One time I was staying at a house on the beach. At night I put my headphones in and walked down to the water, listening to this song. Gazing out over the ocean, which felt endless in the dark. The waves washing gently over my feet. The stars glittered overhead, and it almost seemed to me as though they were singing this piece to God. I felt like laughing and crying all at once. Definitely one of the most beautiful moments of my life.

This choir knows exactly how to sing this piece. A lot of choirs would make the mistake of singing these types of pieces with a classical tone quality and a lot of vibrato. What makes Whitacre's music so amazing is, when sung correctly, it has a sort of ancient, pure sound quality that is quite difficult to master. What an amazing piece of music!

    • @jolson88
      @jolson88 9 лет назад +52

+Daniel DiMarino Music "Ancient, pure sound quality" is such a great way of putting it. It feels so timeless. I connect emotionally quite a bit performing music or listening to it and it's like Eric's music surpasses all my logic centers and hits me in such a primitive and powerful way. As cheesy as it sounds, it is almost like different parts of my body are joining in song with the music, reverberating with it, celebrating its existence.

Without the exaggerated vowels and excessive vibrato it tends to be easier to tune a song especially something like this. It's fantastic reading and direction.

+Daniel DiMarino Music I agree. My university chorus just performed this and all through practice, my instructor told us to sing in all straight tone, no vibrato. I now see why.

I grew up a band geek and played October in high school. One of the most amazing memories I had was my director dropping his baton during the climax of this song at a competition. We could all see tears streaming down his face. It was truly a magical moment... Ever since then I have treasured this song. Eric Whitacre has not only touched my heart with his music, but he has opened my eyes to the world of choral pieces. Thank you Eric, for the memories and beautiful music you have given us all.

Wonderful how a non-religious man can create a piece with such an ambience of holiness and sacredness. In an interview he said he was inspired by music he heard in a church and that he wanted to make it sound like an endless fountain of praise. He did that amazingly well. Im not saying that this isnt eric's works but God's or something. This non-religious man is just suh a genious that he has created a deep feeling or urge to praise endlessly. With his music he is capable of expressing such a complex feeling. Wonderful.

Geez, I've had this on repeat for, what, 6 hours now? No wonder the views counter went up so much today.
Edit: I think I've watched this over 200 times in the past week. Maybe I have a problem?
Edit 2: Here I am again, finals week is a great time to listen to this one again. On repeat. For a few hours. Good times.
Edit 3: this addition is being added during summer of 2020, and we all know what that means. The peace this song brings is something I think we all need right now.
Edit 4: 11 hours remain before a major final assignment is due, and I've barely begun. I'm projected to graduate in less than a month, and this project is my final major barrier which will determine if I get to walk across that stage. It's time to focus again, with some Eric Whitaker in the background.

While I believe this touched on in other posts, I would clarify a few things. "October" was first written for band years ago. This is a vocal arrangement using the Alleluia text that isn't imitating, it is close to an exact replica. It is interesting in that many of his vocal works have also been arranged for band (and orchestra, or in the case of "Equus" band to orchestra AND voice together) and because of the immense beauty of his writing they are seamless in either genre.

@@Falkenred01315 Alleluia (Greek), also known as Halleujah, is originally from Hebrew, meaning "Praise Jah" or "Praise Yah" aka Jehovah/Yahweh (JHVH/YHWH). The Jews that rejected Jesus and the pagan Romans that supported them, removed God's name when writing the scriptures in Latin and replaced it with LORD to try and conceal the name.

You would expect the EW Singers to nail this and boy did they! The pure tone is unbelievable at times particularly from the Sop 1. Most classical groups would sing with vibrato which I dislike intently in almost all classical choral music. For me it is an ugly distraction particularly in amateur voices. This group demonstrates an awesome control over their clarity and brilliance of steady of tone (the long held note just like a trumpet, is exquisite starting around 5.17), allowing the music to shine without distraction. I can cope with a bit of vibrato (flutter) from soloists at the appropriate times and the soloists also manage to keep control of this beautifully. Divine, thank you.

You are so young. I am 18 and have been singing your music since middle school. I thought you must have been an old master to produce this music, but nay, you are a young master. To many more years of success, my brother in song!!

So incredibly beautiful! In this tumultuous world in a pandemic crisis, I turn to the music of Eric Whitacre for peace, beauty, serenity and calm. As a high school teacher in NYC I find myself posting these videos for my math students to explore while secluded at home. Thank you for this masterpiece and the many others available on your channel.

Coming from a French Horn player that just loves Whitacre's, October, this brought my to tears. Brilliance .. Brilliance.. I love it, I was I was vocally inclined to perform this. Heck, even utter some of the notes, but I have my Horn to fall back on. I salute vocalists, I now see them in a completely different way now. Thank you Eric Whitacre!

Eric Whitacre I can’t help but wonder what inspired this piece?
A close friend lost his brother to suicide, and this helps reflect on the sanctity of life... how valuable we all are equally. To want so much for another to experience life, means you must have the same right. So no matter the fears, the endless troubles, the life within us is sacred. We must cherish it truly, and not numb or despair over it.

Well, a story for this song... I always thought of a mother holding her child for the first time (around the Middle Ages, in a fancy bedroom with a large canopy beds and a few people stand on either side of the bed as the mother cradles the baby's head in her small hand). As the music swells, the father, a young man with slightly shaggy hair and a grave handsome face with stubble kneels down and touches the mother's forearm. This is his way of expressing what he cannot say
