  • The Soemtron 215 is a very late high-end mechanical calculator. It seems to be identical to the Rheinmetall SARII-c K which on its turn is not much different from the Reihnmetall SARII-c.
The video is taken after repair of the motor speed governor.

There's a good reason this machine resembles the later Rheinmetall machines. When the Soviets took control of East Germany after WWII the Rheinmetall factory in Sommerda was nationalised. Calculating machines produced at the factory were sold under the name Soemtron until the factory was reorganised under the Robotron collective.

The same machine was sold as Rheinmetall SAR2c untill 1960. Then the name changed to Supermetall. In 1962 the name changed to Soemtron ("Soem"merda Elek"tron") with the market introduction of an electronic billing machine. It must have been a uncertain period for the factory and its employees in particular because it was clear that mechanical calculators were going to be replaced by electronic calculators. The first one developed by Soemtron was introduced in 1966. Sources: www.rechenkasten.de/BueromaschinenLexikon and www.soemtron.org .
