Redd was pitching a fit about how Carroll O'Connor was making more money than him playing Archie Bunker, so he decided to "strike" and sit out a few episodes until they gave him more money. He eventually got his way but it's pretty obvious that the producers and writers could have kept the show working without him for a good long while if they wanted to!

Hands down the best and funniest episode EVER!!!! I was a preteen when this originally aired and my whole family was crying from laughter....since we only had one TV we were all crammed in the living room watching what happened.....we just became unglued

When I was a kid my grandfather suffered from cataracts and hearing loss. I can still vividly remember him sitting close to the television, like about 1 foot away, with his hand behind his ear to hear better. The only shows he watched was the news and Sanford and Son. I can still hear him laughing out loud at Fred and Lamont. Great memories!!!!

Best sitcom ever made. Single interactions that the characters had with each other are better than entire seasons of most sitcoms. The Sanford Arms episode for instance. When the hippie came to the door and was met with a barrage of sarcasm from the king of comedy himself. Libra Rising All Over Lamont. Fred repetitively calls Lamont a dummy and then begs him not to leave. Then the ''stick your face in some dough and make some gorilla cookies'' bit with Esther. Too much to mention. The best

I don't think he was underrated.. This is probably my favorite sitcom ever. And I would say him And Redd Foxx were equally important to the show. Which is why this is one the greatest shows ever.
