I got to watch Stephen Colbert for the first time when I ran out of John Stewart's The Daily Show episodes on the Comedy Central page and since then I got hooked. I miss his old style of interviewing people, always posing a challenge to the guest, like he did to Jane Goodall and she came out brilliant. Stephen's a genius!!
Yeah but you sadly just can't do that when you're hosting one of the big 5 (or so) late nite talk show pillars of network TV (you know NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX...I feel like I'm missing one but I can't be - y'know, the oldest TV channels around, most of which began ad NYC-based radio networks in the 1920s & 1930s before becoming the only channels that existed on TV for many years starting in the 1950s - the lowest numbers on the dial - CBS 2, NBC 4, ABC....idk, 3? - as well as FOX who didn't come along until the 1990s and has always been on channel 11 in the places I've lived).
Y'know, NBC's _The Tonight Show_ starring Jimmy Fallon (formerly starring Johnny Carson, then with Jay Leno even though it should have been David Letterman) & _Late Night_ with Seth Meyers (formerly with David Letterman, then with Conan O'Brian, then with Jimmy Fallon); CBS's _The Late Show_ with Stephen Colbert (formerly with David Letterman) & _The Late Late Show_ with James Corden (formerly with Tom Snyder, then with Craig Kilborn); and ABC's _Jimmy Kimmel Live!_ with...well...Kimmel...obviously.
Once upon a time, I'd be able to gladly include _Conan_ with...well, Conan....Conan O'Brian....uh, on-uh-on this here...y'know, list....But he has officially bid farewell to late nite TV, presumably forever and also ever too even, as of 2021 and can now only be found on his podcast - which, iirc, is still called _Conan O'Brian Needs a Friend._

LOL - for anyone whose ever seen a taping, this is particularly great. For example - the director - Mark has his rolled up paper clenched in his hand backstage even when the show hasn't started yet... always ready to shake it at the audience and make applause happen :)

That's funny for me because sometimes while watching his show I have involuntary thoughts like "I bet I could do this", which are obviously untrue, especially after seeing that overwhelming experience from backstage.
