Gary is one of the baddest baritone saxophone players playing today. I had the honor of joining The George Coleman Octet in 1987 continuing up to the present and around 1991 Gary began to play the Bari sax chair and it was always inspiring listening to Gary’s soloing. Hats off to you, Gary! Pepper himself would undoubtedly be knocked out, I am sure.
Im an alto sax player and I am practicing bari sax for the peices called "the entertanier" and "greased lightning" and I know bari sax is way harder than alto..I respect bari sax players. and It sounds awesome
I regret reading several of the other comments, simply because Gary Smulyan is a great player who comes totally right out of the tradition. I'd spent much time, in my youth, standing on the steps at the Village Vanguard hearing Gary swing his ass off, as part of the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. We all (those of us in the know) wish people would start to get a jazz education at least under way, before feeling entitled to comment and display such stupidity and ignorance.
You absolutely can because of the frequency range. Been playing all saxes and flutes for 50 yrs in everytype of musical setting. Bari is easier to coverup by the band than tenor or alto and I can play LOUD. .130 on bari with 31/2
As fab as Gary is, I find this genre of music eye glazingly numbing, just running up and down scales fast does nothing! Do people really enjoy this? I fail to see its charm, nice chair!
CSMedia to the trained ear, and people who know the basis of theoretical ideas this “genre” is extremely entertaining, to be able to understand/hear how he applies complex ideas is truly amazing
This comment strikes me as extremely ignorant. What he is doing is far far far beyond just "running up and down" scales. I absolutely love this type of music because it is so mentally stimulating and full of energy. You really need to listen to a lot more jazz if you don’t understand this music.
I would suggest repeatedly, and actively listening. It’s much more than just playing scales on chords or just playing fast. His virtuosity is just one aspect of his playing but the ideas he is delivering is the real deal, my friend.
Brian Rapanos I can give him a lesson on swinging anytime but he'll have to come and see me not visa versa. You have my contact, you can give it to him.

If I remember rightly it's an old Conn Crossbar and an Otto Link #10*...

It's right in the middle of them all. I think it sounds the best too.
Just heard Gary on Real Jazz Sirius Radio!

You can't drown out a bari sax
I'm pretty sure you can

Jack Saiyan It's 1920s conn naked lady
Yea!!
True. I just wanted a bit less drums. I love the bari sax.
Can anyone remind me what this tune's called?
Hi. What is his setup - horn and mouthpiece?
1:43
probs because it seems to be an older vintage instrument
And there's a reason... :)
Timbre is how you spell it.
I used to think 'nimble baratone' was an oxymoron, not any more......
It doesn't have a low A key :( FIRST COMMENT!!!
Most professional jazz bari players don't have low a
Are they sure that's a bari, it sounds too good
Drums are way too loud. They are drowning out the bari sax.

charlie parker thought it was nice lmao

If you think it’s “running scales” you should study some music theory.

man should learn to relax, then he'd swing more
I don't know, Gary can swing pretty hard. If you were to half time everything he plays, you'd find how melodic and swingin it all is.
Noah Pettibon Definiely a lot of friction between rhythm section and Smulyan. I do not question his lines.

Maybe next time Gary's playing at the village vanguard or some other world class club you can let him know, maybe even give him a lesson....
