I was lucky enough to be at this performance as well as their gig at Emo's that night. I will *always* go see Living Colour anytime I have the chance! Best band to come out of the 80's...
Please don't misunderstand me. I think Vernon's a great guitarist, it's just the fact that his playing isn't instantly identifiable, as are most of the greats. You hear one note of Clapton, BB King, SRV, etc., and you know instantly who it is. vernon is one of those guys who's so versatile that he could be any one of them on guitar.
Gosh, guys! I didn't know my comment would stir it up so much. Once again, I think Vernon is a very talented player, and I don't mean to take anything away from him. He's no Hendrix, and I'll stick to my guns by that, but he's a very good guitarist. I'm sorry if you all thought I was putting him down. I'm not.
Thanks, Taco. I mean, he's good, but not too much better than guys I 've jammed with in the past, and currently jam with (OUCH!, I know I'm going to get hit hard for that one, but it's the truth). There are so many distictive guitar players out there. Have you checked out Coco Montoya, especially when he was with John Mayall? I highly recommend ytou do so, the name of the album being "Wake-upCall". Muy excellente!!
If it's been done by the original artist (and how else could it be done?), you ain't gonna improve on it in most cases. There's only one Hendrix; one SRV; one Clapton; one BB,;one Albert, etc., the last time I looked. So be yourself. Don't try to be somebody you aren't. Aim to be you, with your own style. Develop your own style; your own rhythm, your own space. Don't try to occupy other's, because it'll never make you the player you could and should be.
Vernon is good, but not great. He has no distinctive sound that immediately notifys who's playing, vs. BB King; Albert King: Albert Collins; Hendrix; SRV, and others. When those guys play(ed), you knew immediatley who they were by their signature licks and tone. Not putting Vernon down; I think he's a very good guitarist. Bot not great.

Most people would consider that a good trait, being such a versatile guitarist. I don't think anyone can mimic Vernon's playing.
Jimi live!!!
God gave and took Jimi from us
