I think Venus Theory's videos are great and insightful and honest. I hope he doesn't change. Its difficult to find meaningful information on youtube that isn't just pointless clickbait.
Seeing that there was an interview with Cameron pretty much stopped me in my tracks. My plans for the evening changed. Look, there are those of us that feel the pain of perceiving the world around us. Cameron, time and time again, always proves he's one of us. Thank you for such a god interview. @SonicScoop You're now on my radar.
So many solid gold nuggets throughout. You guys are just touching on things that are so relevant and important in this day and age of Music Production. Blown away with the amount of wisdom thats coming through your experience. Loving this! God Bless both of you💪🏽
“I miss the video where you taught kick drums” That’s what a search bar is for. The message I love is the creative needs to do what they are interested in. Not the audience. There are 8 billion heads. Someone will vibe.
I love the channel because of the long format videos. You give depth to a concept, its philosophy and history. Short videos quickly become noise & junk. Thank you sir! Watching from Kenya 🇰🇪
I loved this sooo much and it's also a great representation of the world we live in. I myself discovered a few years ago that most of us live a life that others want us to live and we do things that others want us to do. for example in the interview when Cameron told about his old videos about how to make kicks or people rambling about producing "wrong". When I discovered this myself and when people in general come to this insight they can see that they have the option to choose the way their life goes and yes it's hard because everyone around you tries to bring you back in the world in which you're just a follower but it's the people who get out of that pattern that make changes in the world and I think that's what he ment with BEING an artist if that's your mindset than you don't care about what others say anymore and you do it for you and you will find a crowd and those will be the best fans you can imagine also, since I chose to not follow the normal expected pattern anymore (getting with the latest fashion, buying the newest iphone, constantly post on social media, study than get a job you don't like for thirty to forty years and finaly die,...) I am so much more happy if I do things I don't think ow no what do the others think. If i want to wear comfy clothes with some holes in them for the day I can just do it without thinking. The people who see me will think i'm poor, I follow my dreams so I don't get to a day to day schedule with a boring job and just enough to pay for rent and basic stuff but so I can have a future in which I setup organizations for charities, bussinesses made for people to have fun etc. I know it's a long message but I just want to share this and if you read this think about it: are you still stuck as a follower if yes think about your inner child. what were/are you're dreams, are there things you always wanted to do because in this day and age with enough hard work you can accomplish it. I have gone trough a lot to have this mindset at the age of just 23 but it was worth it for the result. Live a life you will remember!!! :)
Dear Sonic scoop guy, like my mom would say, when you talk, make the end closer to the beginning. There are many times when Venus guy comes in in the middle of your sentence… this is how long, at most, your direction should be. Next time you watch a great interviewer, re-pay attention to how little they talk and ramp to a question. The fact that you have a channel and have people like this is awesome. Great work. Respect. Now, with one more whack of the horse, onto greater work. Talk less, listen more, throw in just a few words to bridge the guest into the next thing so that we get what we want… to listen to your guest. That’s why we’re here. I know this is not easy to do, respect. I also know that honest critique, received as such, is one of the most potent catalysts for improvement. Keep up the good work.
Meh. I used to listen more and interview more. But these days I have conversations with guests instead. It's just a different format. I just no longer bring people on just to share their view, but to have a conversation together. It's more interesting to me that way. I aim for about 50/50 with the guest these days. You may prefer others who do conventional interviews instead. That's fine. They can do them. I'll do me :-)
This guy is one of the best reasons I stuck with making music and now released my first EP and will continue making so. His videos helped me so much understand myself as musician better and how to approach this kind of craft. Also he's such a relatable guy. His videos always feel like talking to a good friend who truely understands what you're going through.
Cameron is one of the most thoughtful people in the RUclips music education scene. It's awesome to hear a long form conversation with him like this. Thank you 👍
This conversation made me think of Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon. A fantastic book for anyone early in their creative journey (and equally relevant to folks at any stage ofbthe journey).
What Camerons says about the industry wants you to buy the latest gear, and the musician thinks he needs that otherwise he can't make the music he has in his head. It's like I need to have this camera, lens, filter or I can't make the photograph. Well my dad told me that it doesn't matter at all what camera you have, just go out there and make pictures. You need to train your eye to see things and make the pictures YOU like. From that day on I took pictures and don't care what others think of it. Sure thru taking pictures I found out what works in a picture for me and what doesn't.
Man this was an awesome discussion. He's so good at articulating his thoughts in a way I could relate to so I learned a lot from this. I also appreciate how blunt he is on the state of music production and marketing on RUclips. It truly is predatory and everything else he said was true as well.
Bjork’s Medulla album.❤ Would start someone on Post or Homogenic. It’s all good though. I can’t count how many of her tracks that I listened to and though they were “trash” that I came back to listen on repeat. So replayable.
Yes, you got it! Medulla. Thanks for the great comment. I liked Bjork from the beginning, but there are definitely artists I have had that relationship with. Tom Waits and Boards of Canada both come to mind where I just couldn't get into it at first, and then some day it clicked. Very relatable! -Justin
About time Venus got his interview with others very known music channels. I kinda knew was coming sooner or later because in comparison with other channels here he goes thru other things that are not directly music making related but rather more into "personal approaches and struggles in music business" if that makes any sense. 5 - 7years ago Recording Revolution (When Graham was directly involved) they touched a tiny bit of that area but then kinda forgot about it ...? But when I stared watching Venus again he was really digging into all that and thats what made me stay subscribed to this day. Dont got me wrong , plugin reviews and all that is exciting and interesting but when you go thru what makes you struggle to make music and it doesnt have anything to do with plugins or studio hardware ....thats to me even more valuable lesson than anything and Venus Theory has opened my eyes a lot of times on that area.
Hey Justin, so be it, or, amen. Thank you for this interview. It was extremely insightful and I love Cameron‘s work as well. Or at least his channel. Lol. I’m gonna go to work now. Not gonna worry about gear anymore. To that degree. Lol. I love this man. Back to work bro. :-)
This was a great interview. It touched on many things that impact us as musicians, producers and human beings. We all go through the same things in life. Loved this!!!!! 👍👍
Thanks so much for this interview! Both you and Cam are so articulate, well spoken, and have so much insight to share on this topic. The idea that there is no one solution because everyone is different and everyone’s path is different really hits. I’ve never known any artist to get the results they want by copying someone else. Studying perhaps, but not straight copying 🤔 Dookie and a Bjork are great examples of authentic creativity! Anywho thanks again, this is awesome 😁🙏

I've used RUclips a lot for all kinds of music production tips and tricks. Thing is, without TRYING THEM YOURSELF, they are meaningless. No weight should be given to any clickbait comments / titiles that surround those video's. It's, indeed, all up to you as an artist what works for YOU, what sounds good to YOU. All the rest is just noise...

A lot of the problems is that many people in "music" have great passion, some talent and a determination to succeed. It's not enough. You've got to be brilliant and exceptional and RUclips doesn't pay, clients pay.
I'm only 20 minutes in but I want to chime in about the Bjork thing. I like Bjork, especially her early albums and yes, she does not care at all, just does her thing, but... She has done an album like Debut and she has done some songs/music for films to help her kickstart the whole thing. She did have a career with Sugarcubes before her solo career. The point I'm trying to make here is that she might be at the stage where she doesn't care but she did follow the trends and did some "commercial" stuff to get to the point where she can do whatever she want and not care about everything else. @@SonicScoop something like that. Anyway I love Mr Veenie Weenie he makes great art
Yeah, the trap of focusing mostly on production, instead of on the art. Is kind of why don't you become a music tech instead of an artist. Hard to ever get any artistic flow with that approach, it becomes more mechanical using pre defined patterns of thinking with focus on self judgement with all the producers in the whole worlds weight on your shoulders. Kind of like using 4 hours on the snare sound instead of making use of the outburst of your musical DNA. 🤓
I mean you need to balance production and artistry to get the best workflow to create your musical goals, from the "studio" viewpoint.
Never forget the entertainment value of the RUclips videos. Even if the messages might not be 100% in a video, it can balance up the whole experience. 😊 Actually the same for music, if production is less cool, the entertainment experience might tilt the total experience of encountering it.
