Hi, your reviews are really informative and your playing is another level mate ;) I would kindly like to ask you a question, I am going to buy a OM size guitar and on my list I have the Martin OM-42 and a Santa Cruz OM Pre-War, both guitars play fantastic, but if you would need to choose one out of these 2 instruments, which one would be your pick? I know is personal preference, but I would trust your suggestions ;) thank you very much in advanced :)

Thanks very much! Personally, I would likely lean toward a Santa Cruz. They only build around 400 guitars per year, and their attention to detail and tone is top notch. Some folks really like having 'Martin' on their headstock, but I tend to really like these smaller builders more.
      Good luck on your hunt!

+eddiesguitarsstl I do highly appreciate your prompt reply :) thank you! One tiny tiny thing why I find the OM-42 slightly better than the Santa Cruz OM/PW is the bridge string spacing on the OM-42 is 2 1/4" compared to the 2 3/16" on the OM PW... Do you think that the 2 3/16 is still good enough for fingerpicking?..... Luckily I own 3 other Martin guitars and a Taylor so the Martin Logo I have it already ;) this time I'm really looking for the best tone on a OM and found these 2 instruments really good... Thanks again Matt for your help

I too prefer the 2 1/4" or wider spacing at the bridge, which Santa Cruz offers as a custom option. I feel slightly cramped on the 2 3/16" - but that's personal. If you were to end up going with a Martin, the OM-42 is a great choice as Martin tends to reserve the nicest quality sitka spruce and Indian rosewood for these upper end models.
      Cheers!

+eddiesguitarsstl hi I just wanted to give you a quick update: I tried today a Bourgeois Vintage OM 2016 upgraded with German spruce top instead of the standard Adirondack, rosewood back & sides. The string spacing is 2 5/16 and I found it absolutely amazing! I'm just not used to this guitar boutique, I live in Zurich, Switzerland and we don't have them here... What are your thoughts of this guitar maker? Are they as good as Santa Cruz or like a Martin OM-42 as we were discussing before? Thanks a lot mate,

I love the Bourgeois guitars - they are among my very favorite for sure. I also like this wider string spacing - and the is no price increase to get it that way. Dana and his small team build some of the finest acoustics ever built.
      Thanks!

🔵 42 style is alot nicer than the 45 style cause the snow flake inaly are more esthetically appealing than the hexagonal inlay ; abalone inlay on the b&s is just expensive overkill on the 45 style anyway
🔵 if you're having a difficult time chording on the OM try the OOO-42 with it's half inch shorter scale length and lower tension
    i own the OOO-42 cause E.C. is right❕😉

Which is the better guitar, the OM42 or the D45?

    • @wezleyjackson9918
      @wezleyjackson9918 6 лет назад

Hi Julian, It depends what you want to do musically - If you want lots of bass and low-end and the ability to take heavy strumming style, Dreadnought like D45.. However, if you want more response in mid and high tones and in particular nuance over heavy playing Orchestral (OM) guitars like OM42 may be better suited... My advice - Buy a cheap D45 and a cheap OM42 clone (laminate guitars) and try the two types out - Then once you have leaned toward one direction then get your checkbook out for the real Martin :)

pss. Sigma Guitars make some decent inexpensive guitars - Sigma used to be owned by Martin but were bought recently by a German company.. They continue to make guitars similar to Martin specs but with cheaper materials and labour and lower cost...

You’re comparing a Dreadnut to a 00 orchestra guitar . Body sizes make a huge difference. I have both a D 42 and an OM 42. I’ve had a D 45 in the past, but when I heard the D 42 with forward bracing I was blown away. The bass response on the 42 is the best Martin makes for a full sound.
OM 42 I love for completely different reason. It’s a small like a 00. It’s bright,it’s light, and sounds great on the high end. If I were playing solo ( I play with custom thumb picks ,and my first, and second fingers ) you can’t beat the D 42 for playing solo. The OM is best when playing with someone else,it gives you an entirely different tonality, and the two guitars playing simultaneously work so well together . Some may say the D 42 is bottom heavy, well you’ll see in both these guitars DO NOT USE HEAVY STRINGS . Use Ex light to light gauge strings ( Elixer are great strings ) .
The action on both is great, albeit the OM neck is much different ,I wish Martin had a wide neck option, but they don’t in any production guitar.
Bottom line, if just ONE guitar go for the D 42, if you’ve got the loot and smaller hands get the OM 42 as a second guitar. The OM is about $2000. less expensive . Lastly the tuners. I don’t know why Martin doesn’t use open back Waverleys as opposed to the Martin open back Waverly in house knock offs.
