This video goes into full detail on how the 928 handles deep snow, heavy snow, wet snow and your snow plow drift across your driveway. The video also shows how the automatic steering acts on a side-hill and if this Toro 928 OAE can clear steep slopes.

    I grew up right near Windom MN, where most Toro's are manufactured. So I obviously have a slight bias towards Toro, but I can honestly say, I have had nothing but good luck with them. I have a 35 year old Toro commercial trimmer that my dad actually dug out of the trash, and a 2004 22" recycler mower. Both still run great with no major repairs other than I had to replace a wheel cover on the mower.

    I bought this machine after asking your advice. It was super easy to assemble looks great I even bought and installed drift cutters. Unfortunately or fortunately it’s only snowed once and not even enough to shovel. At least I got to wax it and spray everything with silicone so the dust doesn’t stick to it. 😁 My neighbors are all thanking me for buying it, they think it will keep the snow away. Lol Thanks again Paul for your help and advice.

    The Toro HD lineup is more than likely the best all-around two stage snow blower on the market regardless of the cost. The patented no clog impeller system and the quick stick shoot control and all-around balance and performance of the Toro HD lineup is hard to beat. Until Toro's patent expires, everyone else is trying to compensate with bigger power plants. When the patent expires you can bet Ariens and everyone else will implement the same design into their machines.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  Год назад +2

      Both Toro And Ariens are designed to throw excess snow back out the front of the machine so you can keep your impeller at a higher RPM to throw the snow farther.
      The Toro spells out that system called the ACS. Any excess snow goes into that hump and then straight out the front in front of the auger. If you watch the front end of the Toro in 10 inches or more of snow you can see it throwing it down and out the front.
      With the Ariens system any excess snow also gets throw out the front. The impeller throws that snow out the front - to the left. That's why if you watch an Ariens in 10 inches or more you will see snow shooting straight out the left front.
      If you watch both systems work on the commercial snowblowers the Ariens will throw a little more snow than the Toro, but the Toro will throw it farther.
      Both systems are the best in the industry.

    Got to use my Toro Power Max HD 1232 last winter for the first time. Had a storm that left 6 inches of extremely wet heavy snow. The wettest snow I have ever delt with. I have never seen snow pack on the tires so badly. As far as the performance of the Toro to deal with that wet stuff I have to say I was very impressed. Threw it well over 50 feet and never even hinted of clogging. I was not expecting that kind of throwing ability with such wet heavy snow. The Toro Power Max HD engines are easy to start and have plenty of power and torque and are relatively quiet even at full throttle. I used silicone spray on every moving part of the machine and never had any freezing issues with any of the controls. Lost some tree branches due to the extremely wet heavy snow. Hope we don't have any snow like that this winter. The single stage I use to blow off my back deck did a great job, but the wet snow stuck to the wheels and made them useless. I highly recommend any of the Toro Power Max HD snow blower machines. I believe auto steer is used on the HD 1028, 1030 and under. Let's see what Mother Nature has in store for us this winter. Happy snow blowing everyone.

    I actually chose the Ariens Rapid Track based on your reviews of the ability to “move” snow. I don’t need it to throw snow as far, I need productivity. That’s Ariens Rapid Track SHO. I’ve had Toro’s clog at a way slower pace than Ariens. Marketing hype IMO. Just reiterating.

    Just got this machine,,only used a little but it’s a beast compared to my 26” Sears. I installed factory Toro hand warmers,wire harness switch and all.Fit perfect ,work fine.Grip parts #127-5951,wire harness#138-3644,and switch #122-1124.Ordered right from Toro dealer I got machine from. Measured amps and voltage at full throttle,3 amps @ 14 volts. Warmers got to about 110 degrees.I put some spray foam inside handlebars to help keep the heat in the grips. Really odd that this machine doesn’t come with hand warmers,it has the exact same stator as the 1028 that is identical as far as electrical system is concerned.All the parts were around $100.

    • @plmn93
      @plmn93 2 года назад

      Thank you, that is good to know. Maybe some of these come with a different stator? It doesn't make sense to me either that Toro wouldn't even offer handwarmers as an accessory on a premium machine like this.

    I'm impressed that Toro moved up to the twin hinged deflector. That's an attention to detail that isn't common. I'm still an Ariens fanboy, but Toro is a good brand. In the past they've had some interesting, if maybe not the best, ideas that they've tried out over the years. Their old metering augers and the plastic "anti-plug" chute come to mind.

      How good are the new Toro HD models? This video shows how well they work in deep wet snow. I nearly bought an Ariens but after all the research and owner views I read, Toro HD machines were all in all the best movers of snow in all conditions. I ended up with a Toro Power Max HD 1232. Don't get me wrong, Ariens are great snow blowers, but Toro's patented anti clog impeller system really works well especially in wet conditions. Another situation the Toro HD machines do well, is they don't ride up on the snow even in deep wet stuff. Enjoy the video. Action speaks louder than words. ruclips.net/video/R_pANI8mvjA/видео.html

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  Год назад

      Yes, Toro's ACS is arguably the best on the market. That said.
      Ariens Deluxe, Platinum and Pro units also won't ride up. The only time they will is if you have a broken shear pin.
      Ariens also off-loads the snow so the impeller can keep a higher rpm and throw the snow well - they just do it differently.
      I explain how each system works side-by-side in this video: ruclips.net/video/KxXuNZWDLYg/видео.html

      I’m actually doing a comparison and Ariens is cheaper than Toro, there are some differences though. If you have a 14” auger and impeller like on the Ariens Deluxe that would match the Toro 928. Deluxe 28 is also lighter but a couple things to like on the 928 is the 265cc engine made be Loncin (it’s a newer design than other Toro engines) which is bigger than the 254cc on the Deluxe 24 and 28.
      I would give the engine on the Deluxe 30 the edge though, LED lighting is a nice feature on the Toro as well. For reliability I like the cast iron gear case on the Ariens. Once you get to a 14” auger and impeller that’s really commercial-grade so they can handle those stuff that the plow hits you with after a major snowfall, that can be brutal to handle with a shovel and most snowblowers struggle with it. If you can get that done quicker I think that’s wort the extra $$ compared to an 11” auger / impeller

    It seems the new Toro machines pulverize the snow more than the old Toros or other manufactures. Even in the wet snow by the road, the discharge seems to be very airy. I thought my 828 Powershift threw good, but there is no comparison to the newer Toros.

    I'm impressed with how far that throws and how well it goes through everything. It was almost comical how much farther it was throwing snow compared to your neighbor. In fact, maybe a bit too far for me honestly. I'd probably have a tough time keeping it out of the neighbor's driveways this year when I need some height to get it over the banks.
    Edit: It appears that Toro still makes the HD line in the US.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  5 лет назад +4

      Hi plm93, Only a few of the economy snow blowers are made in Mexico. The Power Max HD series including this 928 are made just south of Minneapolis.
      I didn't show enough of how the double jointed chute will let it throw snow right next to the snow blower, over 50 feet or any distance in between.

    • @plmn93
      @plmn93 5 лет назад

      @@PaulSikkema That's interesting, I had read somewhere all their snowblower manufacturing moved to Mexico. Could you say where you got that from? I don't mean that as an insult because you are a credible guy, I'm just curious.
      And yeah I think you demonstrated the articulation pretty well by the mailbox and on your other video. Trouble is by this time of year I have to shoot up a bit to get over the berms which are taller than the blower, so I'm afraid these new blowers would shoot them right over the berms and into my neighbor's driveways. I was thinking of going with an Ariens Deluxe for a similar reason, the manual rotation crank has more precise aim.
      In any case, thanks for putting out these videos, you continue to be the most comprehensive source of snowblower information out there. By a long shot. These machines last so dang long it really makes it a tough decision. My Ariens is on its 18th season and even then I don't really need to replace it, I'd just like something a bit easier for the kids to handle now that they are at an age where they can help. And something with handwarmers. It seems Toro doesn't offer them as an accessory on this one which is puzzling.

    • @PaulSikkema

      Not a fan of getting my glove caught....it does....in the toro shoot control but its secured better and has more adjustment. My new ariens pro only shoots straight across where the toro can aim downward. Also the ariens pops out once in a while whereas the toro stays in place....maybe the ariens lever needs tightening. Idk.

      The snow is too deep and too heavy for the SnowMaster. The intake height is 18 inches (there is 21 inches) and even trying to clear a half-pass the SnowMaster is too light and would not have the traction to push through the snow. If you knew you were getting this amount of snow you would have to go out in the storm and clear 8-10 inches at a time for the SnowMaster to work.

      @PaulSikkema  4 года назад +1

      Personally, I can't decide if I would pick the Toro 928 OAE or the Ariens Deluxe 28 SHO. Why? Because both are great snow blowers and both will fit through the side door on my garage. (I have a 32 inch side door) I can't get the 30 into my backyard without going around the outside of the house...if I could use the 30 - it would be the 30 EFI. The 30 EFI really punches above it's weight...

      @PaulSikkema  5 лет назад +2

      Yes, He is patient when I'm filming these videos. I throw it high because most viewers want to see how far it throws. The Toro Power Max HD does have a double jointed chute so you can throw it 50 feet or right next to the snow blower. Watch the section where I'm working around the mailbox to see it throwing snow close to the machine.

    Many people like to show how far their snow blower can throw snow . Unless you have the room to throw the snow 50ft than distance is useless . Most peoples lawns aren't that big . Throwing snow maybe 15 or 20 ft is good enough at times . I just bought a new Toro blower this year . I love it but I have no need to throw the snow 50ft . Sometimes blowing the snow that far has the wind blowing it back in your face . You are right in saying a big 30in snow blower can be a pain to handle at times . I don't use my 30in Craftsman unless I really have to .

    • @PaulSikkema

      That is one thing I like about the new double-jointed chute on the Toro Power Max HD Series. The snow blower can throw the snow right next to the snow blower if needed.

      I have no preference. I suggest going to a dealer and trying the chute controls - that's the only real difference between the two. Capacity-wise, dependability, and performance they are the same otherwise. The question really boils down to would you rather have red or orange sitting in your garage for the next 20 years?

    Hey Paul it’s me again is there a justified difference between the 928oae and the 1030 in power I know the engine says it’s bigger but if you’ve used the 1030 do you feel and see it as well I know about the hand warmers and the bucket size I personally want it the 1030 for the hand warmers and power is it worth the jump

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад

      The 28 inch 928 will move a certain amount of snow because of the engine size. To move the same amount of snow through the wider 30 inch 1030 it needs a larger engine.
      In other words - if you are clearing 10 inches of snow with the 928 at 2 mph you would be able to clear the same 10 inches at 2 mph with the 1030 but you would get done faster because the snowblower is wider.

    • @PaulSikkema

      The biggest reasons I'm not reviewing Simplicity are: 1. B&S who owns the name filed for bankruptcy this year and we don’t know if the snowblower division is going to survive. 2. Simplicity has lost a lot of dealers so it’s harder to find a dealer to work on one. 3. The design really hasn’t changed since the 90’s. and everyone else has made major improvements to their Pro snowblower's capacity and handling heavy/wet snow
      It was a great snowblower and still is built well but the rest have surpassed it for the price.

      Yes, the only difference is the steering. The difference in the 1 HP is not noticeable.

      My answer is complicated because I have purchased a few popular models from brands just to test. So I own a Toro Power Max HD 928, Toro SnowMaster 824, Toro 60 volt, Snow Joe 100 volt and a Ryobi 40 volt. That said,
      I clear snow from concrete, blacktop, an old paver patio, gravel, dirt and turf. So if I had to go out and buy my own right now I would buy the Toro 60 volt for light snow on my concrete driveway and patio but I also need a 2-stage for the rest.
      I can't decide if I would buy the Toro 928 or Ariens Deluxe 28 SHO for the rest that I have to clear. I like them both a lot.
      If I could only buy one machine and cost was no object I would buy the Ariens Platinum 28 RapidTrak in an instant.

      The area that I'm clearing here is bare ground and grass. Earlier snows have melted and then froze so there is a layer of hard, "crunchy" snow that I'm walking on. The skid shoes are set so there is 1/4 inch of clearance under the scraper bar. So, yes, I am leaving a little snow - but nowhere near 2 inches.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад

      Single-stage snowthrowers like the Toro 521 are designed so the scraper and front auger touch the ground. They are designed to clean right down to the pavement and don't work very well if you try to raise the scraper or auger up so they don't touch. 1. the front auger touching the ground helps to pull it through the snow. 2. It also alllows the snow thrower to clear right down to the pavement.
      3. The scraper bar is easily replaceable if it's worn or dented. The scraper is a cheap replacement part. 4. The auger paddles will wear out eventually, but are also inexpensive and not a big job to replace.

      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад

      I hate it when brands "recycle" model numbers. That said, I adjust the skid shoes so there is about a 1/8 to 1/4 inch gap under the scraper bar. I take a piece of cardboard or a piece of 1/4 inch plywood and place it under the scraper. Then I loosen the skid shoes and let them drop down to the floor. When I retighten them I make sure they stay flat and level to the floor. Your scraper and auger won't wear out then...

    Hey Paul what’s your thoughts onToro power max 826 AOE?

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  2 года назад

      It's Toro's most popular 2-stage machine. It's a good snowblower and designed for a "normal" suburban home that gets "normal" snow. i.e., 2-car drive, up to 100 feet long, sidewalks and can go out on the turf to clear a path to your shed.
      It only has an 11 inch impeller so it doesn't handle heavy/wet snow as well as the Toro 828 or the Ariens Deluxe models. The 828 and Ariens Deluxe have a 14 inch impeller so they will handle the heavy/wet snow and will throw it farther.

      2. Make sure the fuel shutoff valve is in the open position (the finger tab is horizontal) If it was off let it sit about 15 seconds for the gas to fill the carb.
      3. Move the choke to close
      4. Push the primer bulb 3-4 times. Use your finger and make sure the little hole in the center of the bulb is covered. A gloved hand doesn't always work.
      5. Pull the rope 3-4 times. Did it start?
      6. If it started move the choke slowly to open until the engine smooths out.
      If it didn't start and you've been trying to start it. Open the choke all the way, connect the electric starter and then run the starter for about 5 seconds. Do that 5-6 times. That should clear the gas out and it should start. Don't run the starter for more than 15 seconds continuous - that can overheat the starter.

    I don’t like that you have to let go of the drive system to adjust the chute, they got that backwards. It seems like a great machine otherwise.

    Once again my friend hello. I’m 75 years old and believe I may be a bit better in shape than you but not by any means as though I was 35 years old. I giving you this info not to criticize anything about you, but to allow you to understand a bit about my strength. Knowing this I would like to know what you feel would be the biggest wheeled machine I could use comfortably? I’ve communicated with you many times and truly value everything you’ve said regardless if for an Ariens video or a Toro video. After you respond to me I would like to know if you would feel their 1030 r the 1232 machines would be too much for me. Currently I still operate my Honda 1332 Track machine, but not like I did when at the younger age of 35 years old. Believe me when I say you are one heck of a wonderful person who responds quickly, honestly, and with great information. Thanks for all the past interactions and for any questions that yet may come.

      Kraken: The dealers don't get the order info for this coming season until at least April 15th. Did that dealer sell any of the Special Editions last year? If he didn't they may not be available to that dealer this year. Check with him in late April and other dealers if he can't order them.
      The Special Editions are very popular and I know there will be more made. Ariens, like everyone else, is still having supply chain issues so they may only be able to fulfill Krakens that are not ordered this spring.
      I would love to have the Kraken - it has all the newest stuff including EFI, large fuel capacity, electric chute, 360 degree LED lighting, and so on - but the model I'd buy for myself would be the Ariens Professional 28 RapidTrak Hydro. Why?
      1. In "wheel mode" it's perfectly balanced so it's very easy to turn. The machine itself is one of the largest capacity machines so it won't ride up in the front if you try to push too much snow into it - even in wheel mode. It is a lot easier to turn than a wheeled snowblower because it's balanced.
      2. Pull the lever under the right handle and drop the tracks into track mode. It has all the traction it needs for snow. In track mode, you also get rid of the "it wants to steer by itself" complaints you hear from others who have the wheeled Ariens and Toro auto-turn snowblowers. When you want to turn just push down on the handles and it goes right back into wheel mode to make turning easy. It will actually zero-turn because both tracks move when you turn.
      3. The 28 inch PRO actually has about 30% more capacity than your Honda 1332. (Actual specs from Honda and Ariens) In other words, it throws more snow so you can walk faster. Because it moves more snow you don't get as high of an arc as you do with the Honda but it still throws "Normal" snow 50 feet or more.
      4. The 28 Pro does not have EFI but I don't need it where I live. EFI gives you a quicker governor response, a little more power, and it automatically adjusts for higher altitudes. The Ariens engines are designed for E10, 87 Octane fuel.
      5. The Ariens Pro models - including the 28 Pro and Kraken have a much larger capacity and they don't clog on heavy/wet snow. The chute opening and chute are huge!
      6. The ONLY time I've ever broken a shear pin on the PRO models is when I stuck it in a chain-link fence. Over the years I've had a broken front strut off a car and a baseball-size rock inside the housing. Both made a lot of noise but never busted the shear pins... If you run a lot of gravel through it the inside of the impeller and chute don't chip near as bad as the Honda. (A little Rustoleum fixes the chips) I also never heard of paint issues on an Ariens (like Cub Cadet)
      7. Like your Honda the tracks also have a dig-in mode where you can put all the weight of the snowblower on the rear of the tracks. That way you can scrape driven on snow off your paved driveway.
      8. The Pro models come with heavy, cast iron skid shoes and you can get poly shoes if you don't want to scratch your pavers or deck.
      9. The Hydro is one of the PRO's biggest strengths. The lever is located close enough to the right handle that with a little practice you can change the speed and even go in reverse without stopping and taking your hand off the handle. It's also a single, commercial-grade hydro so you'll never have problems with it. The trigger steer Hondas use two smaller hydros.
      Everything I've mentioned also applies to the Kraken and Mountaineering models. With the 32 inch width, they have even more capacity.

      @@PaulSikkema Just had a thought: in my Hondas I would run it wit soft grade metric bolts with nylon lock nuts. Have you any experience, feedback from others, or just an opinion as to what if I would do the same with the Ariens? I would only do so if I had not the same experience as you with them not shearing with what you stated, but if my experience has them shearing often I’d be interested in a less costly alternative. Thanks once more.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  2 года назад +1

      I included the info you asked on Facebook in the previous comment.
      ALWAYS use Original Ariens shear pins. Ariens shear pins are designed so they will shear when needed and won't cause damage to the power train. Shear pins are designed to break in a certain spot so most of the time they fly out of the hole. If they don't - they shear cleanly so they are easy to push out with an awl or pin punch. ( or even the flattened end of a nail.
      Use the Ariens shear pins and they will last much longer than a cheap alternative. Like I said, I easily have 200 hours on Ariens snowblowers and I've only sheared two sets in 10 years. Both of them were from getting the snowblower caught in a chain link fence.

    Toros anti clog is not “anti”. It clogs in wet snow. Had it happen more than once. I just ran my new Ariens in 6” of wet snow. I was in top gear, 6, and it didn’t even breathe hard. Threw the snow 30+’ without missing a,beat. Impressive. My Toro couldn’t go past gear 3 in most bigger snows and still clogged. Especially wet snows. New Ariens fanboy.

      @@PaulSikkema I had the Toro 826 OE. Sold it and bought the Ariens Rapid Track Platinum SHO. I have a friend that has the same Toro I did and his clogged on the last snowfall. • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад +1

      Yes, the Toro 826 with it's 10 inch impeller compares more to the Ariens Compact and MTD's 2-stage machines. It's a great machine for most Midwest driveways but it doesn't handle heavy/wet snow as well as the Toro Power Max HD or the Ariens Deluxe/Platinum/Pro.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  4 года назад

      The 928 has about 9 HP and automatic steering. The 1028 has about 10 HP and trigger steering. That's the only difference. If you only get 8-10 inch snows either one is fine. But, the 1428 is a commercial snow blower. It has about a 14 HP engine, dual impeller belts heavy-duty skid shoes. It will handle any snow you get quickly - including drifts, plow piles, etc. It will last you along time. Here is a link to it at Home Depot: homedepot.sjv.io/4rP09

    DON'T YOU THINK A PLOW WOULD BE A LOT FASTER. ALL THE MONET YOU SPEND ON SNOW BLOWERS.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  Год назад

      Plows have their place but it really depends on the amount of snow you get and where you can put the snow.
      Where this video was made in Northern Wisconsin they get a lot of snow. In fact the year this was made my 42 inch chain link fence was buried. So a snowblower or loader tractor would have been the best way to clear the snow and get it away from the driveways.
      Snowblowers get the snow away from your driveway so you don't have huge piles alongside your drive that just causes the next snow to drift across it.
      If you live in an area like I do now a plow on your lawn/garden tractor could work because we only get 2-3 snows that are more than 6 inches.
      I'm guessing you are thinking a plow on your lawn/garden tractor. They are pretty much worthless because todays lawn tractors have no weight on the back and only one or two currently made have a locking differential. In other words they can only push about 2 inches of snow - downhill unless you have 300 lbs of weight on the rear and tire chains.
      A snowplow on your ATV/UTV is a little better because they weigh more and some have 4 wheel drive. But a plow for them is more than what this snowblower costs. And - they still won't get the snow away from your driveway and sidewalks.
      Finally, a lot of homeowners have landscaping right next to their driveways and sidewalks. Spouses tend to get really mad when you destroy those expensive flower beds and shrubs by pushing snow over them. And your neighbor's tend to throw cusswords your way when you stack you snow piles on their property.
