Hey yea they do work mainly I’ve heard of them being used on old Roman coins but I haven’t got one I was going to invest in one for when I get jewellery but it never happened lol but maybe in futer will get one for this reason always can test a batch or an object before doing all

Would using a sonic cleaner work well on those dirty coins or is that too abrasive ?
Yea a sonic cleaner will probably work on them quiet well actually good idea the vibrating won't cause hairlines as your no wiping the surface
