    Mark's father is horrific. He only appears once, but that it's more than enough to understand how Mark turned out the way he did. It's truly a testament to the quality of the writing that they managed to do it in only an episode

She criticises various private family things & twice tells him to f*** off, all in front of his family when meeting them for the first time. She storms out when she receives a bad reaction.     Im so glad we stopped doing these dinners as a family. Its a shame really. Something that is meant to be a time of celebration and coming together often always turns into arguments, drunken fights and casual insults. My christmas days have been far more relaxed since I've started spending them alone lmao

    Bizarrely, all my original comments are present, but all my replies missing. benoplustee, you don't think Dobby says anything wrong? What do you think Mark should have done? I agree that the Mark-Jez scenes in Quantocking are good, but they're the only entertaining part of the Jez loves Dobby storyline. What good points - outside s5 - does she have? The way to deal with being in Dobby's situation is to not be at someone else's family gathering. Failing that, don't say anything out of line, or leave.

      I think Dobby is overall uncomfortable because mark starts put the evening refusing to acknowledge that they're dating. Thats pretty hard for a grown man i his 30s to justify, idk how much trauma hes been through. So right off the bat shes being put in a crappy position of having to pretend they arent dating for his comfort.
      It doesnt help that the dad is antagonistic and clearly fucking unhinged. I feel like there is no way anyone with an ounce of compassion could take the father's side over Dobbys. Like obviously shes upset. It's not unreasonable that she didnt feel like pretending/playing along to make it through a tense dinner with a real sack of shit

    Dobby at her worst. She really stirs up trouble, yet expects Mark to back her when she has deliberately caused a whole load of trouble. She then stomps off with a look on her face like she's chewing a lemon when she doesn't get her way, leaving Mark to pick up the pieces.

    benoplustee, Dobby chooses to be in a relationship with Mark, knowing exactly what he's like. She chooses to go to the family Christmas dinner, knowing that she hadn't been invited & that Mark doesn't want his family to know about their relationship. It's clear that Mark has very good reasons to not want his parents to find out. Had she not been there that day, his family would never have found out & the scene would have been permanently avoided. I'm not siding with or defending Mark's father.

    When Mark's mother asks Dobby if she has a boyfriend, she could & should have said "no". A simple way to avoid a scene. However, Dobby of course wanted to create a scene.
