    Here are some pictures of the inside of the radio:
    / panasonic-rf-17286667
    Features I like about this radio:
    Speaker is good.
    AM sensitivity is good.
    Color scheme is cool with its two tone silver on grey.
    Tuning indicator.
    Glow in the dark dial.
    Features I wish they would improve on:
    Build quality seems weak.
    Tuning scale is way off.
    Difficulty tuning FM stations, could be location.
    Earphone...really?
    Overall, I was not as impressed with this radio as I thought I would be. I can not recommend this radio as a buy. There are so many better performing radios out there. I would buy the Sony P26 or the Sangean SR-35 over this.

      Review to be posted tonight. Quick thoughts, it has a great build quality, I was very impressed with. The AM isn't as strong as this one, but the FM reception is fantastic and is a great analog tuner. Not sure of the battery life. Keep the volume lower and you should get 50+ hours. It packs a bigger speaker.

    Hello Todderbert
    I write from a faraway country - India. I have one RF-P50 (manufactured in China) bought 20 years ago. I also have two of 15-year old Indonesia-manufactured RF-P50D(the DSP version) radios. All three are still in 'excellent health'. This little radio should have acquired vintage status by now but its continuing immense worldwide interest never ceases to amaze me. I am really surprised to find the P-50 (and the P-50D) market still going strong, after passage of possibly a quarter of a century. Most radio manufacturers would not even consider manufacturing a particular radio for so long a time. You are the expert for me. Would be grateful for some answers:
    1. In which year (or nearabouts) was the P-50 first launched by Panasonic?
    2. Was this radio first manufactured in Japan?
    3. Was it ever manufactured in the US or Canada?
    4. Is the new AFC model of the P-50D vastly superior to the vintage analogue model?
    5. What, in your opinion, is the secret of the staggeringly long period of survival and popularity of the P-50, which is essentially just a simple AM/FM pocket radio?
    Many thanks in advance for your answers.
    Bhaskar

      I will help answer your questions, 1. The P50 was produced around 1980, the P50d was produced during the digital radio era, namely 2007. 2. The reason this product continues to sell for a long time is because People still need small radios, to reduce dependence on smartphones.

    The glow-in-the-dark background of the frequencyband indicator may seem gimmicky to many but i think it's one of the coolest things on such a radio. In fact i find this radio even more interesting than Sony's ICF-P27. It's so cool the RF-150 has it too.

      I have the Sony off-p26 & it’s the same as the 27. It didn’t pickup many frequency’s. I alighted it & now it’s hard to find a dead spot on the dial,lol. Panasonic radios are normally top notch. I’m surprised this one he showed was this fuked up.

    • @grundiguy3594
      @grundiguy3594 6 лет назад +5

      I think the "D" stands for digital. The way it tunes, either all or nothing definitely suggests DSP circuitry. My model without the "D" tunes more continuously, (Analog) without the in and out tuning. However, the AM band is much more deaf and the FM is loaded with intermodulation and overload. So your "D" model is superior to the older without the "D".

      @@todderbert Last month a relative sold me a Panasonic RF-2200 an 8 band crystal tuning analogue radio from 1978 in $50.00. It works fine, only the top of the telescopic antenna is broken and for me is the best radio I ever have. Even I fitted 4 Enerloop AA batteries on D size casings rechargables to avoid leakage and lower op costs (they are made by Panasonic too, how strange) This radio commands DX!

      @@todderbert All started with the purchase of some items from the Soviet Union on eBay like radios and pocket calculators, and when I commented about them with a relative who her husband died long ago and told me about the radio wanting some money from it, when I search on eBay I told her that broken ones are asking $170 aprox. and in working order more than $300. She got the urge to sell it as it was heavy to carry and cluttered with knobs and switches and need quite a space to put it. Then I went on to ask how much she wanted and she promptly sell it for fifty bucks. Sometimes luck strikes as later in life people have more important needs to cope with. My life was very difficult, with money not there for other things, never like selling things as my parents did not stress on saving and money making opportunities, but with patience and perseverance I get through in life, knowing that cheating and lying are not things to be proud or justify for. I hope you find one and make a good review of it here. Sure you will as I unkowingly get one. I just love radios and that's why I watch videos to learn more about them like channels like "Two Hands and a Radio" and "Shango066". Take care and blessings.

    I am glad I found out about this radio, the FM reception is horrible and it is hard to tune into a station and the AM reception is better, but still not great. The radio also seems very cheaply made and the dial needle is way off the station to where you have it on a station. This is not a good radio. Even the same version of this radio that goes from 520-1710 on the AM band is not a good radio. Avoid buying this radio.

    I bought one from Amazon a couple of years ago. I got a USA version. It is lackluster but functional. NO earphone. However, I got 1710kHz top on MW. It's a decent little radio is you don't expect too much. I consider this a backup radio. Question: I have noticed on a lot of similar radios (and this one) that there is a screw labeled "ANT. SCREW" on a lot of them. Is this purely a screw to replace the telescoping whip antenna? Or is this a way to attach a wire? What is it intended for? Like I said, I've seen it on a lot of similar handheld radios.

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  2 года назад

      It is labeled so you don't loosen it to open up the radio. Usually you replace the antenna by the outside threaded screw where it pivots. On the inside there are usually washers on that labeled screw, and sometimes the FM wire is soldered directly to the bottom of the antenna mast.

    I just searching on eBay for some Russian made modern radios (older ones from the USSR the only bands were MW and LW) and found the Signal Electronics Ether-01 and it resembled somehow the Panasonic RF-P50, actually was the same case, I guess the same electronics, 64-108 MHz FM frequencies as in Europe and back, only all silver painted, no earphone included for $14.99 with $6.15 for shipping and it sounded a bit fuller than my Sony ICF-P26. The dial is black with a white pointer, the turning on indicator on the left of the dial is missing. The company resells mostly Chinese models but this one was a pleasant surprise as I liked it better than the Panasonic, regardless were nearly identical. I wanted a modern Russian pocket radio and this was a good set. Two thing is that were curious for me is the serial number was two letters and the date as yyyymmddhhhh for 2018.07.30-0648. The model did not have marked the place of manufacture, if was in Russia of China or other place. The performance of this radio is identical the the Panasonic in every respect. But the set was easier to read, even the stations frequency numbers better calibrated, with less attractive colours with the same of the nicks on the paint and less crackly sounding case when squeezed.
    Later I searched the site of the company: www.signalelectronics.ru and it did not have the option of choosing English as I need to use Google translate to know about them. For me Russian made radios are unique but not outstanding and for me interesting enough.
