  • When we, and others, talk about narcissism, it’s important to know whether we are referring to NPD, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, or narcissistic traits. One does not equate the other. Too often people throw around the NPD label, or think that just because someone has some of the traits, they are NPD. In this video, Dr. Hawkins walks you through a simple explanation of the differences and similarities between the two and why it’s important to understand the distinction.

As I'm watching this I'm literally moving out of my marital home and away from my husband. As is normal I go through periods of self doubt. My ex is being super helpful in helping me move my things which confuses my thoughts even more but this video has helped to remind me why I'm leaving (left). We went to couples counselling which was unsuccessful. My husband always took control of the sessions. Over talking the therapist who it became evident by their expression was thoroughly frustrated at not being able to work with us because of this. The therapist was very professional but his frustration was evident even though he tried not to let it show.
We also attended marriage counselling a few years ago and the therapist told us straight up that we should get divorced. No cushioning to what he said.
I also told my husband that I felt that he had narcissistic traits so he asked his therapist and of course my husband told me that the therapist (female) told him he didn't. (After 1 visit). Of course my husband might not be telling me the truth as he can be rather liberal with the truth. He's also very good at charming and flattering women to get what he wants of course and this time it worked like a charm.

5:30 the response to intervention tells all and everything! It takes a breakdown to have a breakthrough!!!! If there's some degree of willingness to look at themselves with remorse or have insight.

Even with just traits and the awareness of, it’s still a very long and difficult process of controlling a whirlwind of emotions on the daily. Your last video stated the lengthy struggle within the mind of one with NPD or traits of. Anger from negativity restructured into positive thoughts turn into sadness leading to depression and shame structured again into counting blessings and positive self talk and finding self worth. Around and around it goes. The most difficult thing I’ve had to do my whole life. And here I thought I was good at everything. 😢 keepin on.

So it sounds like if they have narcissistic personality disorder, and they’re not willing to get to help, it’s a hopeless, dire situation.😮
