- One of the most iconic props from a horror movie is Jack Torrance's axe from #TheShining. So in this video, I'm going to make my own version from foam that's safe for Halloween and conventions!

I am in LOVE with that wood grain effect on the handle.
I like how the ax head turned out. You could see what looks like pitting in the metal.
YOU, dear sir, are a pure work of genius when making these props !
Thank you!
That turned out really well! I will definitely keep the graphite and shellac trick in my back pocket for future builds.
Amazing as always, graphite and shellac, who knew 😊
Awesome! I would have never thought of graphite and shellac. Great texture, especially after you sanded it.
Woah I did not expect to see this!! The Shining is my favorite horror movie and I've been wanting to do a screen accurate Jack cosplay for awhile so this is very handy. Great work as usual! :D
Me too! Thank you.
Hello there Mr. VanOaks. First of all I’d like to thank you for all of your wonderful work. You always continue to amaze me. I’ve seen almost all of the Halloween videos, I’m on video number 74. I just love your work. But, I thought I noticed something about your build with this one. If I’m not mistaken, I believe you placed the axe head on backwards. Not that it matters, it looks absolutely beautiful, but I thought I’d mention it.
Thanks so much for watching! You're right. It should've been much further back on the axe head.
that looks convincing love it
I’m always blown away by your creativity and talent. I always look forward to your Saturday video uploads. Thanks, Derek!
My pleasure!
Little pig, little pig, let me in... That axe turned out great
Thanks guys!!
Wow that Axe looks so real, amazing work 👏💀☠️🎃🎈
Thank you very much!
It looks so amazing
That looks fantastic!!!
Brilliant as always!
Helped me out a lot with a Jason Voorhees cosplay, much appreciated and awesome work!!
Excellent!
So glad I caught the premiere!! PERFECT project for my mausoleums this year. THANK YOU!!!
You are SO much more of an artist then I can ever aspire to be! Thank you for your constant inspiration.
That axe head looks just like 'em after years of neglect. The handle looks great too. Very nice.
I made this out of foam a few years ago. Didn't come out this cool!
Would love to see you cast and mold a tool.... Like a large wrench or sledge hammer. Super awesome Axe!
I do have molding videos, although not of wrenches or hammers.
Love watching your stuff. Thanks again for another great video!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome
Awesome tutorial! I see what you mean about the handle's placement on axe head. I honestly didn't even catch it, though, until you mentioned it. Once you stated it, It became more noticeable. I think it turned out great. Love the use of the driveway marker. It always seems like prop making demands the use of products to be used in unconventional ways. It's kind of comical but also satisfying. As always, thanks for sharing! 🤘💀
I’m not sure what you’re making but it reminds me of an old hatchet, like something you’d use in a horror flick or the like. All that to say, “Thank you” and “Well done” sir.
Cool
My mouth was like this: 😮 the whole time! You, sir, are a creative GENIUS! I am always mesmerized by your work. On to watch the next new video!
Thank you very much!
What I wouldn't give to have you come "DO" my medieval bedroom I'm trying to build !!
If Hollywood ever decides to make a docudrama about Casey Kasem's life or bring back the top ten countdown... Make sure you throw your name into the hate for voice-over actor.
As always, excellent job.
🔥
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent. Adding blood on the axe would've got this vid demonetized lol, so realistic..
This is really cool! Just curious though, how many inches is the width of handle?
Two, I believe. I don’t recall the exact width. You might be able to find replacement axe handles online to get more exact measurements.
It's lining up the channels that does me in
practice makes perfect.
@@VanOaksProps ☺️
Did you have this when you built the shining door photo op?
Nope. I made it last week.
Could you make a large faux rock?
I’ll add it to the list of possible future builds. How large of a rock?
@@VanOaksProps a 3 footer. If possible! Thank you!
Love your work!
How big/long/wide is the axe head?
I don't recall the specific dimension, but I want to say 7-8"
Sir, can u share the blueprints?
I no longer have them, but there's some great high resolution photos of the movie prop online that you could enlarge to make one.
can build a evil dead ash shotgun plz
I’ll add it to the list.
