Smoked Barbecue Chicken on the Pit Barrel Cooker Junior

  • We got a new toy to try out and I thought I would do a whole chicken in the Pit Barrel Cooker Jr to test it out! This was my 1st time cooking in one and it was pretty easy. the Chicken turned out very good and I learned some things to tweak for the next time I use it.

    Darrin's Chicken Rub:
    3/4 cup kosher salt
    1/4 cup black pepper
    1/4 cup garlic powder
    1/4 cup paprika
    1/4 cup Italian seasoning

      I just used it to finish a sirloin tip roast i cooked sous vide and it turned out Fantastic! Video coming soon..

    Try cutting the chicken in half and using the regular hooks. It will be up higher and cook nicely. Briquettes worked a lot better for me in the PBC than lump...

      ManCaveMeals yep, was trying it out as if it were a turkey on the turkey hanger, I am sure half chickens on the regular hooks will turn out better

    Glad your got your first cook done on your new toy. I have never used lump charcoal in my PBC because it usually burns hotter than the charcoal briquettes, and that might be why the skin got a bit too crispy. I would be interested is seeing the difference in the temperature inside the cooker with both lump and briquette charcoal. I am going to the store later today to pick up a turkey, as your video has got me motivated to hang one in my PBC. Another great video, keep up the good work!

      Yeah Eric, i have about 20 bags of lump that I use with my Kamado grills so I thought I would try it with that 1st.. i will be buying a couple bags of kingsford blue to use with this..

    How is the clean up with the pit barrel with the grease dropping to the bottom?

      nope.. a) this was a Junior model which is smaller than the standard 30 gallon pit barrel cooker, b) I do not have this anymore as this video was almost 2 years ago..
