He left work undone and left me without my 3 steps (stairs) to go outside. Please do a video on stairs. Building stair stringers (I learned on RUclips and showed the contractor!) but the steps are loose. Please do a complete video on stairs, how to attach the steps and risers and how to finish the sides and varnish them. I just have the rough! Please help! THANK YOU from Montreal! 🇨🇦

Just wondering if it is possible to install a seamless smooth transition installing 2 different pattern vinyl floor. I have a open Dinning room and family room with a walk way that divides the two . It leads to the backyard. At present the installer put this very thin piece of metal between each transition from one design to the other. Also we continued with the walkway pattern in the bathroom and again there's a metal strip that is like the seam joining both patterns. Do you have a video on how to not have this ugly metal strip? Any outlet with a push in connecter I've used has had a tab that lets you release. That being said, every electrician on RUclips says to use the screws instead.
Really love all your videos. Even though I know all this, I just like watching. Now for the part with the electrical outlet, in my state if the outlet is upside-down then it's a switch outlet. Also thanks for mentioning the hooks on the wires. I replaced all my outlets and switches and I hated that the electrician used the "plug and play", they eventually need to be replaced and like you said, you have to cut the wire every time.
Thinking back on the times that I've gotten these measurements wrong and I've come up with unique solutions like using wire to hang a couple of s hooks to give me the wiggle room to actually hit the catch on the back of a frame or a mirror. Lol
Just a couple comments. On your wire stripper you're using there's a hold on the edge, sometimes it's labeled 'loop'. You can put the wire through that and twist to get a perfect diameter loop on the wire instead of grabbing the end like with a pair of needle nose. Other thing is with the outlet orientation. An electrician friend always said code was to put it ground up, but after doing some research that was only code if you're in a hospital environment. They have some weird codes in hospitals. Like you though, I prefer the smiley face. Great tips on some basic installs. Never thought to use my laser for pictures/mirrors before. Much easier.
Hey Jeff, great video. We actually had an issue with the outlets in our living room because they were the old stabback outlets you warned against. The spring traps were loose and the wires were bouncing around in the outlet, sparking everywhere. It was melting the outlets! Definitely wouldn't recommend that option!
Hey Jeff great video. You said something slightly incorrect when talking about touching a live wire. You don’t necessarily need to touch the neutral in order to get shocked “electrocuted”. Touching any conductive piece of metal will allow the atoms to move from the live wire, through you, and into the piece of metal you’ve touched.
It may have been a design limitation but you wouldn't normally have the shower head facing the shower door. How do you turn on the water before stepping in?
In the US and Canada, white wire always goes on the side of the receptacle with the longer slot. If you look at the receptacle from the front, one slot is longer than the other. White (neutral) goes on that side. Plate screws vertical always. Doesn't collect dust, looks good, and you can always tell if some other person has messed around with your work when you get a call back for something not working. Always go ground/neutral (white)/ hot (color) in this order especially if you HAVE to work on a hot receptacle. Best to use a hand screwdriver so you don't over torque the screws or break the device. Hope this is useful.
17:45 the only reason I have ever heard for mounting your electrical outlets upside down is so that the ground part of the plug is facing up. this way if anything ever falls on a wall and it falls towards an outlet and the outlet isn't plugged in all the way that object will touch the ground pin of the plug and not the polarized or neutral prong of the plug. this way it helps prevent electrocutions if it's something metal or conductive. now I have no idea how many people have things that are flat on the wall that when they fall sideways will go right in between the plug and the outlet but it does make some sense. to me that is the only argument I've ever heard that makes any sense.
Here is a way less complicated way to hang ANYTHING that had two picture hangers to hang up. Place a small amount of white toothpaste on the back of each hardware. Press against wall and pull off slowly. Apply screw or screw/anchor and place them in. Be certain to clean off the toothpaste before hung for good.
We would like to install pull out shelves in both the kitchen and bathroom cabinets. I'm guessing that there might be tricks to have it come out right.
The ground plug on the electrical outlet goes up, opposite the face look. In commercial wiring it is supposed to be that way. Reasoning is if the plug is pulled away from the outlet a little bit, if something were to fall between the outlet, it will not cross the two hot bars, the ground bar would tilt the object to one side or the other.
It's good that you noticed that. Most people wouldn't. You can do it if you want but the actual chances of that happening are for all practical purposes zero. The same as something falling straight down between the ground and the hot prong which would take a minor deflection and need to just touch both for instant. Years ago codemakers made a push for ground on top but have not pressed the issue in most places.
Jeff please don't tell people the neutral and ground wire are always safe. They should be safe but it is always possible that they are not. Everything else came out great good job.

Disclaimer for Quebec, any work beyond changing a light bulb is prohibited unless you are a licensed electrician, and do not dare touch or think about the main breaker panel if you're not a licensed master electrician. Elsewhere in Canada it varies, some allow if you get a permit, but insurance companies like to make their own laws. The issue is that nobody will come to inspect your DIY because they can't caution illegal work...but everybody does it... and that's how you get problems. The dishwasher is a funny one! Jeff, on your farmhouse exterior door install you said always flush over plumb if it comes to it. My door is not plumb, it's off by probably at least 1/2" at the top. Top needs to come out. Can I get away with leaving it? It's an old house and I already sheathed the walls.

Question but not about this video. So I was ripin my flooring out. Cheap planking and I start smelling a moist scent like wet dirt. Its my foundation, cement slab, and I notice a long crack across it with the beginning of some baby roots coming in. The longest one is about 12inches long. They look like some see through vaines. I want to start eiping open the foundation to take out the root. Not sure if the structure integrity of the home will be effected. Any advice on how to figure this out? Worried about gas line,water lines etc being their. I have a pine that is scheduled to be cut down rigth outside my home in thinking that's the blame off the root. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have been replacing light switches around my house for about a year now because the cleaning wipes my wife has been using to kill any covid weakens the plastic and the paddles get loose and pop out. I have been using the plug and play holes. You can get the wire out. There is a little hole you have to press into the release the wire. The first couple of time it was a PITA but I have gotten them down and they are pretty easy to get the wire to release.
I don't think your anchors were a Canadian product. I picked those up a few years ago. The manufacturer probably did enough research to understand Canadians love roberston bits :D
I’m currently working on a home with aluminum wiring what are your thoughts on a product called alumiconn to remedy the possibility of fires from expansion and contraction of that awful stuff(aluminum wire) would you feel comfortable with using that product or would you pull all new copper years back I think I would of pulled new copper but the price of 12/2 is crazy high right now
I myself am more of a screws in the plates go horizontal, only horizontal, and they must match type of guy. My partner will put them in willy nilly whatever direction they fall and it drives me crazy.

No jeff, you do not need to leave wires in the electrical outlet, after cutting out the backwiring. There is a release on the back of the outlet. That being said, I believe it's a really bad idea, just as you, that backwiring is a bad idea.
You are a sadist using a mirror with those hangers on the back 😂 I had to hand a 65kg mirror on those a few weeks ago. I had to open up the wall to reinforce it so it could take the weight. Horrendous. I prefer the keyhole fixings to those. I used masking tape to help them stick out while I hooked the mirror on. The screw type is important too, a pan head screw like you've used is a lot better.
22:04 That is not true. You can get shocked from just touching the live wire. The completed circuit will run via your shoes to the ground. I got first hand experience with that (230v phase though, but i think you'll still feel 110v).
That's incorrect. Nearly every mirror/picture manufacture will tell you not to run wire between the d rings as they're not designed for a diagonal/side load.
Yeah that gap between the stone and outlets would have to be fixed , that would be unacceptable to my OCD , and it looks more like handyman work than professional

The problem with doing that for residential is all the wall warts and big plugs (like window ac units) are designed for the ground being down.

Those side screws arent tight enough. Always finish with a screwdriver. Once you push receptacle in it will loosen a little bit.
I wouldn't use a power drive on a receptacle at all. Always a screwdriver.

Its my foundation, cement slab, and I notice a long crack across it with the beginning of some baby roots coming in. The longest one is about 12inches long. They look like some see through vaines. I want to start eiping open the foundation to take out the root. Not sure if the structure integrity of the home will be effected. Any advice on how to figure this out? Worried about gas line,water lines etc being their. I have a pine that is scheduled to be cut down rigth outside my home in thinking that's the blame off the root. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have been replacing light switches around my house for about a year now because the cleaning wipes my wife has been using to kill any covid weakens the plastic and the paddles get loose and pop out. I have been using the plug and play holes. You can get the wire out. There is a little hole you have to press into the release the wire. The first couple of time it was a PITA but I have gotten them down and they are pretty easy to get the wire to release.

I’m currently working on a home with aluminum wiring what are your thoughts on a product called alumiconn to remedy the possibility of fires from expansion and contraction of that awful stuff(aluminum wire) would you feel comfortable with using that product or would you pull all new copper years back I think I would of pulled new copper but the price of 12/2 is crazy high right now
I myself am more of a screws in the plates go horizontal, only horizontal, and they must match type of guy. My partner will put them in willy nilly whatever direction they fall and it drives me crazy.

Believe unions were involved, but regardless, it’s because it was supposed to help keep devices p,urged in as ground thicker and “meatier” in that area so life saving devices wouldn’t be unplugged as easily if a “bent prong” was inserted etc……

No jeff, you do not need to leave wires in the electrical outlet, after cutting out the backwiring. There is a release on the back of the outlet. That being said, I believe it's a really bad idea, just as you, that backwiring is a bad idea.

You are a sadist using a mirror with those hangers on the back 😂 I had to hand a 65kg mirror on those a few weeks ago. I had to open up the wall to reinforce it so it could take the weight. Horrendous. I prefer the keyhole fixings to those. I used masking tape to help them stick out while I hooked the mirror on.
The screw type is important too, a pan head screw like you've used is a lot better.
22:04 That is not true. You can get shocked from just touching the live wire. The completed circuit will run via your shoes to the ground. I got first hand experience with that (230v phase though, but i think you'll still feel 110v).

The D-Rings is actually for picture frame hanging wire, it's just too difficult to center those holes into 2 screw... 😂
That's incorrect. Nearly every mirror/picture manufacture will tell you not to run wire between the d rings as they're not designed for a diagonal/side load.
