    Ì am a retired k9 officer and I do some obedient training now. I have watched 100s of k9 training on line and I have not found anyone who explains, and brakes it down like Tom does. Watch his videos ! And by the way, I have never met Tom, but he has helped me understand so much about dog behavior that has helped me in my training. Watch his videos!!!!

    Great video as always. My current dog is a Romanian Street dog. He was scared of everything when we got him. Thankfully after 5 years of work he is a totally different dog and even now continues to improve and build confidence.
    The best things for us were very gradual socialisation and habituation. We spent a lot of time sat on a park bench or in a quiet area just watching the world go by.
    Also getting a crate was a game changer. He used to hide behind furniture etc when he was stressed but the crate allowed him to be calm and take a break from everything. The hardest part was for me and my wife to learn not to bother him whilst he’s in there.

    I'm a k9 behaviourist /trainer😅 in the UK with over 50 years of experience.
    Tom is good at explaining and marketing his understanding of dogs. He has clearly studied Martin Ellies and other older trainers. He then puts his interpretation on it and gets results. The problem comes when the owners leave you and the next day, on their own, have to carry. on where you left off. No routine no structure the internet is full of them and over here in the UK everyone is a dog expert.
    Just remember this people, when you get a pup it's a lifetime journey of team-building and your opposite number is a dog not a human the most devoted, member you have. Learning how dogs react in the confused world we live in is major for their development.
    I've recently noticed a guy in the UK has started to emulate him and is putting his interpretation on things. The jury is still out on this one.

      I'm a certified dog trainer in Canada. My training certifications including a masters in aggression and reactivity as well. I've rescued all my life. I'm retired which is why my passion is with dog training. I think the trick is helping people cope with training their dog (how, when, etc) and how they can fit dog training within their busy lifestyles. Reach the people then you help the dog. That's the challenge for sure.

    Just pointing out that poor genetics (prone to being fearful of strangers, loud noises, new environments etc) really doesn't only have to be stray dogs, but is not that uncommon also with established breeders. In other words - do your proper research :-).

    Been implementing some of the things you mention with my 17 month old Collie, who I got when he was 5 months as he just recently started having a fear of bicycles, scooters, especially electric ones, motorcycles and skateboards but only when they are moving with a person on them. He has gotten a lot better in just less than a week, most of the time he sees one and instead of reacting crazy (lunging, barking) he looks at it, I tell him leave it and he comes back to me then just watches it go by. My trick was using a squeaky toy in my pocket each time he saw one and then rewarding him with praise and a treat when he came back to me without reacting to it. Thanks for the hints!!!

    • @beasport505
      @beasport505 2 дня назад

      Any time he's lunging , barking, fearful body signals, etc then you are too close to the stimulus. Distance is your best friend. Practice at a distance BELOW the dogs threshold. It changes each time with different environments and stimulus. Learn your dogs thresholds for each. Then go the distance when your dog can COPE and remain calm. He can be alert and aware of the moving bicycle as long as he's calm. Not lunging, barking, fidgety etc. REWARD your dog at the moment they are calm and see the moving bicycle. Practice Practice practice. Eventually you help your dog have a positive association (high value reward). Go at pace of your dog. Never RUSH your dog. Apply to all environments and stimulus

    I've finally been taking charge and my anxious german shepherd collie mix is doing worlds better. Without as you say an entire Italian deli. I dont have a prong or anything so Ive been using mainly body pressure. It's helping with his reactivity so much. So nice he's actually listening and we have a better bond.
    His obedience had helped us so much. He's hardly even whinning anymore and seems much more relaxed.

    My Great Dane pup was hit by a car and broke is femur. Now he's a bit weary around cars passing by, how would you go about desensitizing a dog like this? Now to clarify a little bit, he's not petrified of cars but he will get anxious/weary if he hears a car driving either towards us or away from us. my street doesn't have a sidewalk and he only seems to do that on roads like mine.

    Hello! I have a couple questions and I’m hoping someone here has a solution!
    1. My 5 month old Aussie just started a two week program with a trainer. 4 days ago she introduced the e-collar. Now, when we ask for a basic sit, he just scratches like crazy. His working level is a 4. Any higher and the scratching goes on longer making it difficult to train. Do you have any tips for compulsive scratching when starting out?
    2. The e-collar seems really tight to me. I have a difficult time putting it on and he sometimes coughs while I’m trying to buckle it. If it’s on the next hole, it never connects and the e-collar is worthless. Is this normal?
    3. The trainer insists on using the tone (beep) function for recalls. Every video I’ve watched on RUclips of other trainers, they are always using the stim. Is there a disadvantage to using the tone function?
    Sorry for all the questions! Just looking to be educated on the best practices for my pup!

  • @Texas240
    @Texas240 2 дня назад

    Re, exposure... You got it backwards. For younger dogs, Age Appropriateness is very important. They don't need to be exposed to everything while young puppies. Their brains aren't ready for it. You wouldn't drop a 2 year old off at elementary school.
    Adolescent dogs, 7 to 10 ish months, may have a tendency to develop strange phobias of things they were previously fine with. So, again, socializing and exposure to everything before then may be pointless if they become fearful during adolescence.
    Young dogs just need to develop the owner bond and their own confidence and a feeling of safety while working on the basics of obedience and play. Then, when their older adolescent puppy brain is more ready for it, begin exposure.
    Overexposing a young dog is asking for phobias and reactivity. Of course, that might keep a professional dog trainer in business when people need to fix their older dog that's fearful.

    • @beasport505
      @beasport505 2 дня назад

      Actually that's incorrect. Socialization IMPRINT occurs in first 14 weeks. If you don't help your puppy socialize to sounds, smells, or visual stimulus on or by 6 months, they may never overcome.

    • @beasport505
      @beasport505 2 дня назад

      AND you do it SLOWLY and AT A DISTANCE and at dogs pace when exposing or introducing new stimulus or environments.

    • @Texas240
      @Texas240 2 дня назад

      @@beasport505 nope. I've had adult dogs encounter new things that they had no exposure to as puppies with no problems because their brain was able to handle it and our bond was such that they were happy to be going where I was going and whatever stimulus was secondary.
      You just don't drop your 2 year old off at school and hope it's not overwhelming. Why would you do that with your puppy and his undeveloped brain?

    • @Texas240
      @Texas240 2 дня назад

      @@beasport505 it's just backward advice to throw young dogs into the human world and expect them to handle it. Then, when they hit adolescence, they may become reactive or fearful to something they had been fine with. Your "IMPRINTING" out the window.
