One of the most influential jazz guitar players in the history of jazz guitar is without a doubt George Benson. His expresiveness, timing, technique, sound and just plain cool way of navigating chord changes is often beyond belief.
In this 4-part series I will take a look at an essential part of Benson's playing: blues licks!
Part 2 & 4 of this series will be exclusively for Patreon subscribers: / christiaanvanhemert

Christiaan I Salute you, Each time you come up with interesting things nicely put together!
Thanks so much Eternal!
Great lesson thanks Chris 😊
Great Bluesy Lines!!👍🎸🎼🎶
Love those bluesy lines!
Thanks Zhen!
I’ve been stealing your shht : )
Absolutely fantastic approach. I do want to start transcribing Ulf Wakenius, can you tell me where to start, which album is essential and full of tasty licks? Thank you so much for amazing content.
I'd check out the two albums he made with Ray Brown. Also check out episode 17 and 18 of my series "Bebop Mondays" in which I codify jazz bluesy playing even more. Here ruclips.net/video/nFlVAWaVL40/видео.html and here ruclips.net/video/608AoFQ1JFU/видео.html
It can't get any better, thanks!
Wow, thanks and you're welcome Asaf!
Interessant dat je alles uitschrijft. Cool video and Nice guitar.
Thanks!
great lesson! blues all day
Thanks!
What an intro!!!
That's how you start a video.
Thanks, I start all my videos with real one take playing. I don't think anyone should take me seriously if I wouldn't show I can actually play!
@@ChristiaanvanHemert And you demonstrate from the start that the video is worth watching.
And perhaps people will forgive me for all the talking after the playing haha!
Thanks Christiaan, very cool!
You're welcome Brian!
Great playing. Have you even tried holding the pick like George Benson?
My hat’s off to you and what a welcome find in this insane time we’re in! How do you spell the name of the Scandinavian guitarist?
Thanks! It's spelled "Ulf Wakenius".
4:31 phrase 1
7:23 phrase 2
Novice question here. When you're soloing through the changes and not using the transcribed bluesy phrases, what mode/scale are you using. For example in the opening 0.48 through 1:05. Thanks, this is great!
Thanks! I actually don't know any mode or scale. I have never practiced any of that. I just programmed my hands (and my ears) to play certain phrases off of chord tones. Go here for more info: ruclips.net/video/AJLOFN12BHw/видео.html
@@ChristiaanvanHemert Extremely interested in that approach. Thanks, will take a look.
This is absolute Frickin’ Gold!
Thanks Vlad!
I cannot read the tabs on screen ... (I know what the answer will be).
Patreon ;)
Listen to "Ill Drink to that" him and Jimmy Smith ,Stanley Turrentine and others.
Yeah, Benson is on 🔥 there!
@@ChristiaanvanHemert Look how he isn't mentioned in so called guitar category polls but the ones who are are in awe of him like Steve Vai, Gambale, and all others ! Jm Hall remarked ,"I saw God after hearing George Benson live once"(rough paraphrase but the main ideal is a fact) I would think some are "the chosen ones" and that has nothing to do with the math of music rather the spirit of strong identities who do good things for humanity musically. GB didn't read and simply could hear enough to learn by ear fast! He has composed some very nice tunes also. Id think there is enough room for the truly inspired to be noted by those who are great! Great work as usual!
I bet that every guitar player who has heard Benson play is in awe of it and inspired by it. One of the greatest for sure!
@@ChristiaanvanHemert You know what's going on! All the best!
Doesn't sound like GB
