    Waaay back in the day, probably 95/96, one of the shops I went to they had all kinds of pictures of all kinds of bandpass boxes. That they stopped building because the Orion Xtr and Colbalt boxes sounded better and were guaranteed to hit! 😁

    I always thought that a purpose of a 6th order bandpass is to wider bandwidths 🤔 because of the advantages of 2 different port tuning. But in the case of 4t order reducing the sealed chember create a boost on the higher frequency?

    • @jimiKr43
      @jimiKr43 Год назад +1

      You find in many record holding extreme SPL cars this is the case... No such thing as a strictly ported enclosure

    • @RobotUnderground
      @RobotUnderground  Год назад +3

      lol. No. My point is WHY would anyone make an acoustic EQ... (Which is a huge gamble), when you can simply use an electronic EQ. The answer is because guys that "design" bandpass boxes are douche bags looking to take your money.

    • @RobotUnderground
      @RobotUnderground  Год назад +5

      If you model a ported box correctly, it can be the loudest in the world. Just ask Scott Owens, the guy that was first to break 180db in 2005 no less. www.streetsource.com/threads/98705/audiovideo-180db-has-been-reached

      @RobotUnderground well back in the 2000 I've seen a build 3 18" custom dd hitting 168 the box was small and it almost had no back wall it was a huge port. But it is a fart machine like you says. A one note wonder.

    I built a series tuned 6th order this year. It was ok, did 130db on 600w power acoustik gw-124 down at 30hz but i felt it wasn't the best. The only way to get the tunings right is by making the port too small or extrememly long, which makes the box huge and even can make it have 1/4 wave modes at totally different frequencies than the box program will even tell them about. In the example you have, it is also going to act as some sort of tapped 1/4 wave enclosure with a tuning corresponding to the length. Im not sure if this is something a lot of designers factor in. These are the reasons i won't use a helmholtz style 6th order. Ive been finding 1/4 wave 6th order to be interesting and am modifying one for the 3rd time. Im sure you would hate it lol

    • @bailey2517
      @bailey2517 Год назад

      Can you explain what the whole "quarter wave" thing is? I hear people say it and I understand it in a literal sense (1/4 of the wavelength) but idk how it's used or applied when designing an enclosure. How is it relevant?

    • @greenbassboosts8872
      @greenbassboosts8872 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@bailey2517You can align the wave off the back of the driver, and the wave at the front of the woofer so that they couple together in an additive way. Also @ the tuning frequency (corresponding to length) the reflection from the rear wave exiting the mouth of the horn/enclosure will hit the cone of the speaker in a way that prohibits movement of the cone, it applies force in the opposite direction as the cone/coil is trying to go. You can get high spl bhole pounding low bass out of it, there's more to it, etc

    Honestly i dont really care. They're fun to build. If you like making cool looking things with wood and also like subwoofers, a 6th order bandpass is a fun, challenging build that gives you a big smile when youre done. But yeah, keep your money and design it yourself

    Okay so I understand what you're saying and it makes a lot of sense but one thing I was wondering about is if you have a sixth order bandpass we're both ports are in the cabin and tuned to the same frequency well that get louder than a standard ported box?

    • @RobotUnderground
      @RobotUnderground  Год назад +1

      You're missing the point. You can do the same job with just a simple ported box... Maybe add some EQ.

    I've been building folded horn cabs for subs for over 10 years and they work beautifully provided you start with a driver with thr correct tsp...I've built boxes that didn't really work in the past but that's part of the fun...$50 worth of mdf big deal turn it into a planter or have a bon fire...there are many way ways to get what you want out of a driver if everything was strictly ported than what's the point....if I can't build something and learn from it I'll collect baseball cards...there is no one right way...there isn't...sorry...been building systems since 1984....I still enjoy it...when I started computer programs didn't exist you bought the loudspeaker design cookbook and you read it...I've built 4th orders back in the day and they worked....I miss the times when it was all still a mystery

    • @RobotUnderground
      @RobotUnderground  Год назад +2

      When done right, all you do is add a, "lens", to any enclosure and it's, "horn loaded". I only recommend horns in a big open area. In clubs, put the subs in the corners and use the corners as the horns.
