Saw him live in Liverpool years ago and been a fan ever since, incredibly talented man genuinely funny and a great musician. Mike Harding and Billy Connolly still out class any comedians around today.
Always loved Mike Harding when I was a kid, highlight of the week when he was on telly on Thursday (I think) night. Got on a train a few years back from Manchester to Blackpool for the Airshow with my then 9 year old lad, and Mr. H. got on at Deansgate, with his guitar strapped to his back, on his way to gig somewhere i guess. Don't think anyone else recognised him, but we traded smiles.
I used to work in the Old Wellington (the welly) in the centre of Manchester in the 80s and remember he came in one day and we were delighted to see him and we had a right laugh with him. Always thought he was a great comedian when he was on telly. His best joke ever was when he talked about his mittens on string going through each sleeve and his mam crossed his scarf at the front and ties it at his back and he couldn’t wipe his nose and when it was freezing he was covered in frozen snot on the way home from school. He used to have me crying laughing. The Rochdale Cowboy indeed. He’s up there with Connolly and Kay …
My hero when i first joined the forces! Wish he was still on. He used to do a song called ‘ My Brother Sylvest’ me and my best mayebused to record his shows on a simple cassette recorder with the mic taped against the TV so we could listen to it later! Happy days no mobiles, no PC’s just phone boxes FAN BLOODY TASTIC can we have those days back please? 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻 Thanks for these happy memories just sat and watched it right through nearly 3 hours BRILLIANT! 😂😂😂
ruclips.net/video/QazSl2-hLuM/видео.html My friend and brother-in-law, love to get us all singing this, (after a few bevies ) he passed away last year, a sound bloke, it STILL gets me laughing
I watched Mike harding on a b/w TV back in the days we only had 3 stations and no net or all night TV. And he did one song called me and my grandads mates well I remembered the tune and chorus so the next day when I went to get papers for my dad I told my grandad about this comedian on telly last night and sang it for my nannan and grandad which made them laugh to a point my grandad had tears in his eyes I've never forgot the song 40 years later then when I became17-18my grandad was the one who said come on go home get changed tha coming for a pint or two with me, so that's what I did my mam winjex about it but I said he don't drink much and I want be long so I taught well he drank drank it quicker that it could be poured but I kept up with him that night because me and my grandads mates
i'm 56 now but still remember these routines word for word as i used to record them on cassette and listen to them repeatedly. its a shame that the weekly shows he did are hard to find.i'd really like to hear the first version of 'The band played Waltzing Mathilda'. The innocence of some of the themes and songs had me in tears all these years later. What a great comedian and songwriter but also an underrated musician. I'd love to get more of his material and also that of a Richard Digance series 'Digance at work' if anyone can help. Thanks
"The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is a song by Scottish composer and musician Eric Bogle. He wrote a number of similar songs, such as "No Man's Land" and "The Gift of Years." If you liked "Waltzing Matilda", you'll like Eric Bogle's other songs. He has a number of albums available, and many of his songs are on RUclips. Mike Harding performed his songs beautifully, but I think you might like to hear Eric himself....... well worth it😊❤
It was in Croydon, mid seventies for me. Every penny spent on the ticket was returned by the man on the stage in form of rich entertainment. God bless yer Mike. Hope you browse the admiring comments here.
I have to like this because this man worked with my dad when my dad bus a bus driver and Mike was a Conductor on his bus, my dad was a whistler and Mike used to sing to the passengers.
Luckily, due to a recent lucky find of 2hrs of this concert on an old 80s Laserdisc, Mike may be putting this out on DVD - we've been in contact and he has been given approval from the Beeb... looking good! He's a top bloke and very nice!
Dear God, I had forgotten just how funny He was! Had the pleasure of seeing three of his gigs in Glasgow in the 1980s. His Thatcher line was classic - "You can't do it to me, I'm doing it to the country!"
My childhood is Mike Harding remember him on the BBC in the early 80's as a young kid my parents have a lot of vinyl records from the 70's to the 80's seen him twice live in in my local area still cracks me up all these years later
I wasn't old enough to see Mike when he originally toured, but my mum introduced me to his comedy through the records and tapes of his shows. I loved them. Finally got to see him when he toured again last year, and he was just as funny as ever. Was able to meet him afterwards too. The man's a legend. Long live Mike Harding :D
Saw Mike on the Red Specs Tour at Southampton Guamont. One of the funniest comedians |I have ever seen. Could make you cry with laughter then cry with a beautiful sad song then literally get stitch from laughing again within a few minutes. So underated!!!! Thanks for posting this. : )
I saw mike in concert back in my youth Sheffield city hall what a brilliant performer excellent humour and music part of his act was flute and a slide show of his trip to Irelandrose of trelee was the music its still the best show I have ever seen keep it going mike
Seen Mike Harding a few times, and at Buxton, first heard back in 1975,had me in stitches..last saw him about 2 yrs at the Lowry complex in Salford..he really fiures my childhood with his stories..thanks for uploading.
"My comedy-folk hero", Comedy GOD more like! This guy was & is dynamite on stage & on record. A big shame he stopped touring. Many thanks for this upload.
With his Durex routine, always remember Jasper Carrott's version, which ended with an Aussie walking into a UK chemist: "Hello there, I'd like a roll of Durex!" "A ROLL?"🤣🤣🤣
I was just going to sleep when I came on this ... neighbours will be annoyed by my yells of laughter coming through the party walls. Not ALL pc, but I did love the gags about 'just going to syphon me python' and the town planner being savaged recently by his guide dog ... good on you Mike! :D
Wow, fancy finding this on here. I was just looking for a particular song of his and found this, and I was there when it was filmed thirty one years ago.I will have to find a couple of hours to watch it all.
Forgot to mention what a fantastic musician and song writer Mike is too, love the sound of that acoustic guitar :) January Man and the Old Gas lamp songs Brilliant!
Many thanks for this brilliant upload. It kept me well entertained the entire weekend. His session of his trip to Australia was hillarious and his sketch of Paralytic man was just priceless.
I'd heard about this performance and I've been looking for it for years. I'm currently sitting here literally crying with laughter. Thank you so much for uploading this!
I love this man,s British comedy. there must be room for this comedy today. please can he be on telly AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Ah Mike! I remember seeing him the seventies before he became BBCified when the working class working class laughed at themselves rather than the middle class laughing at us.
Many, many thanks for posting this. Saw Mike on this tour at the New Theatre in Hull. Crazy thing is, thirty years later, I can still remember all the jokes!
He did two new tours last year and seems to have come out of semi-comedy-retirement. Met up with him on several of the dates and it was great to see him back on the road. He recorded a live DVD which is available on his website mikeharding. co. uk
Actually, there is more like this - just been sent a copy of his One Night In Lincoln series from a great guy in Australia. He has the clips on RUclips too in 10min installments if you search for them. Mike may be releasing this Buxton show later in the year after I found a Laserdisc copy of the show (better picture and sound quality than this version) - I've sent him it as he hadn't got any of his Beeb shows
Sadly he no longer fits in with the BBC's idea of presenters, so he was given the boot back at the end of 2012. He now produces a weekly folk podcast - google his name to find it.
To be fair he was replaced by Mark Radcliffe who is decent enough. Harding had been doing it for about 12 years, nothing lasts forever. Personally I never felt it was the same after Jim Lloyd retired.
Love this, though one thing I have noticed is that the song Take Your Fingers Off It re appears on the One Night In Lincoln set as Gimme Dat Shaky Pudding.
Dangermouse brought me here as he wrote the theme tune to the show.Didn't Jasper Carrott do a similar ROOTine with the Aussie expressions? Forgot how funny this guy is. Does any Mike fan have the song, 'Whitsuntide Clothes'? It was a really sweet little love song on one of his albums. I used to have the record but its long gone now - given to some charity shop probably. But I used to love the song, and wd love to hear it again if anyone has it. Cheers. x
