  • Philippine-American Performing Arts of Greater Pittsburgh (PAPAGP)'s 8th Annual Dance Recital titled, "SARI-SARI" at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater: September 15, 2019
"Asik" - A solo slave dance performed by the umbrella-bearing attendant of the sultan’s daughter to win the favor of the sultan. She dances and poses in doll-like motions. Asik usually precedes a performance of Singkil.
"Singkil" - This dance takes its name from the brass bell anklets worn by the princess of the Maranao region. It tells the story of a princess caught in a forest during an earthquake caused by fairies. The crisscrossed bamboo poles represent the shaking trees and falling rocks, which she manages to avoid. Dancers waving fans represent the forceful forest winds. The umbrella-bearing attendant
loyally accompanies the princess throughout her ordeal until she is finally rescued by the prince.
