The Marching Poets have definitely gotten smaller since the high school I worked at (Withrow (Ohio)) saw them in the Turkey Day Classic Parade back in 2009.... Give it time because you cannot keep a good band down! Mr. Roberto S. Farrar Former Asst. Band Director (now residing in Anniston, Ala.)
In order for more people to join, we have to restore their trust and faith, in the band program...We had a band director that lied, cheated and robbed the band program for 8 years; which drove it into the ground and trust was lost...Now, under its new direction of our very own, Mr. Brandon Key, a 1999 graduate and former Marching Poet; we now can start rebulding the dynasty.
This is really sad to see... I remember in 1979, the BAND was THE organization to belong to.... it was the biggest band....now it has dwindled to almost nothing...sad...
We're currently recruiting new members to join the band, but it seems no one want to join the band. I always thought the school BAND was the shit to join. :(
Once upon a time, this was a fine marching band and now look at it. Pitiful. My son played in the Dothan High School band several years ago and there were over 200 of them, not counting non musicians.
I figured it was a neglectful director or either the district killed it (we all know that when school systems want to find money they kill band, choir and other artistic programs). Hope they get it squared away. There are too many resources (Bama State, Tuskegee, AAMU, etc) and charismatic alumni. I actually was reading that Lanier was cold even when the band was predominately white..... I can only imagine if the "Million Dollar School" could talk!
Yes, I played alto sax for Lanier in '84. The band was much much larger back then. I'm not sure what has happened since then.

Absolutey...It will take sometime to rebuild a stellar program; that was destoryed in 8 years...For you cannot keep an "awesome" band down!
Correction, I played in '84 & '85 then started working a part time job to save up for my first car :-).
Go Marching Poet's...We are a work in progress...
