So true. My father joined the Royal Navy at 16 in 1939. He did all the destroyer campaigns and 14 years service. Later in life he got absolutely no help from this country for even the easiest of things. When you see what a mess this country is in you do wonder what was it all for in a weird way.

Good point. A country should take care of its youth. Provide them with education set them up for a bright future (Not necessarily expecting them to all go to university, rack up huge debts in students loans, forced to study stuff they are not interested in and won't do them any good anyway). Military service should offer its own benefits. It's not all about sending kids to fight in wars they know and care nothing about. Such a force of motivated, skilled, citizens would deter aggressors in the first place.

@@niriop There isn't much within the current context that can be done except for the native population to organise politically & culturally to create parallel systems to the state & a level of ethnic solidarity. As the inherent contradictions and instabilities of multiethnic nationhood become clearer politics will likely change. Especially with economic deprivation and foreign wars around the corner. Within the current liberal paradigm the best that could be done is a civic nationalism which slows foreign settlement and attempts to create common "national values". Obviously that is not sustainable longterm as the native population will become increasingly perterbed by minority status and the transformation of the society. I think the contradictions within the system will eventually create the conditions necessary for a resurgence in native national consciousness and resistance. I served in the 60s/70s and that was because I was not afforded the opportunities for education because I came from a working class background. 80 years ago, "our country" though being impoverished by war debt, was still "rich with Empire wealth", and despite being class-ridden and poverty-stricken in the bottom third, nevertheless, it had a sense of value. It had "values", "freedoms", all worth fighting to defend, even with soldiers from the countries who were "the Empire" supporting the cause. In the last 30 years..... where have all the values gone? What are we fighting to defend here? The Post Office exhibits how far we have slipped to a Police State, where private security firms (Post Office Consignia, TV Licencing, Energy Companies etc) can attack and imprison innocents just like the Police all too regularly do. Are we expected to defend a nation, defend "government and monarchy", potentially laying down our lives, with those shabby "ideals" of justice at stake? The population has been failed by the last 30 years, where IT and oil wealth should have made so much progress possible. That money and wealth now resides in off-shore tax-evading accounts around the Caribbean, keeping value out of the UK. That is the withered sum of what we would be laying down lives in the defence of. Many of those wealth owners would be making a profit from shares in arms manufacturing, to boot. As in WW1, they are most likely the ones rattling sabres and spoiling for this fight that now, this time, will end in nuclear annihilation. No one actually wins in the end. No Humans. The thing about having a ‘conscript reserve army’ is that those reserves have to be re-trained on a regular basis in order to make them effective. So there would have to be a continuous programme of refresher training basic skills (weapon training, NBC, low level tactics) as well as regular fitness training sessions. This immediately raises the questions of who will conduct and supervise such training, where would it be conducted and what additional payments would be forthcoming for those attending? What would all this cost and who would pay for it? Based on recent history, the likelihood is that the ‘Working Class’ would end up paying to protect and preserve the privileges of the [non-tax paying] ‘Upper Classes’. Somehow, I don’t think that the young are going to participate in a mechanism that expects them to give [potentially] everything to receive virtually nothing for the benefit of those who contribute almost nothing.
Some retraining, some career assistance. Not much, nothing akin to a GI bill. Then again medical isnt such an issue in the uK as it is free at the point of need. Something like the american system, whereby college / university fees are paid after so many years active service would be a good idea I think .
People have to have a reason to fight. I've joined the reserves. I'd fight for my family, community .. I dont fight for MPs and I have a real problem with what they have done to our nation.
If you want to recruit more people into the armed forces, then maybe a good place to start would be to address the barriers towards people joining. If you made pay more competitive; made conditions like accommodation better etc; made army life more flexible and if the army gave better support to people coming out of the army... then perhaps more people would be willing to join, and from broader areas of society. The reality is, in the age of social media, people aren't quite as naive as they once were I don't think. Pay, conditions and support are apparently woeful in the army, so it makes sense for people who may have left school at 16 etc etc to go for other options rather than consider joining the army to become cannon fodder in x or y conflict 4000 miles away.

What is there for young British people to love about their country today. They are the first generation in British history who will be poorer than their parents. So what is behind them? Maybe if they had a genuinely better future to look forward to, they may be motivated to fight. But the young look around and all they see is decline, decline, decline. It’s depressing.

@@niriop There isn't much within the current context that can be done except for the native population to organise politically & culturally to create parallel systems to the state & a level of ethnic solidarity. As the inherent contradictions and instabilities of multiethnic nationhood become clearer politics will likely change. Especially with economic deprivation and foreign wars around the corner. Within the current liberal paradigm the best that could be done is a civic nationalism which slows foreign settlement and attempts to create common "national values". Obviously that is not sustainable longterm as the native population will become increasingly perterbed by minority status and the transformation of the society. I think the contradictions within the system will eventually create the conditions necessary for a resurgence in native national consciousness and resistance. But there are no magic solutions given the demographic and cultural trajectories inherent within the liberal socio-economic system.

I am a true patriot. But, as many have commented on here. The state of this country is it worth fighting for.

All you have to do is look at history to see why young people have no interest in joining the army, national service, etc - the government haven’t looked after veterans, they’re not well paid and there’s a risk they’ll be drafted for war. Tell me what the advantages are?

I served in the 60s/70s and that was because I was not afforded the opportunities for education because I came from a working class background. I wouldn't serve now especially under the present government. They think of themselves as "the ruling class", most of them attending private schools and see the lower classes as cannon fodder.

Can we ever imagine the UK's Ambassador to Russia criticizing the Kremlin for saying it wants to build up its armed forces against a possible confrontation with Great Britain?
The thing about having a ‘conscript reserve army’ is that those reserves have to be re-trained on a regular basis in order to make them effective. So there would have to be a continuous programme of refresher training basic skills (weapon training, NBC, low level tactics) as well as regular fitness training sessions. This immediately raises the questions of who will conduct and supervise such training, where would it be conducted and what additional payments would be forthcoming for those attending? What would all this cost and who would pay for it? Based on recent history, the likelihood is that the ‘Working Class’ would end up paying to protect and preserve the privileges of the [non-tax paying] ‘Upper Classes’. Somehow, I don’t think that the young are going to participate in a mechanism that expects them to give [potentially] everything to receive virtually nothing for the benefit of those who contribute almost nothing.

Some retraining, some career assistance. Not much, nothing akin to a GI bill. Then again medical isnt such an issue in the uK as it is free at the point of need. Something like the american system, whereby college / university fees are paid after so many years active service would be a good idea I think .

If you want to recruit more people into the armed forces, then maybe a good place to start would be to address the barriers towards people joining.
If you made pay more competitive; made conditions like accommodation better etc; made army life more flexible and if the army gave better support to people coming out of the army... then perhaps more people would be willing to join, and from broader areas of society.
The reality is, in the age of social media, people aren't quite as naive as they once were I don't think. Pay, conditions and support are apparently woeful in the army, so it makes sense for people who may have left school at 16 etc etc to go for other options rather than consider joining the army to become cannon fodder in x or y conflict 4000 miles away.

What is behind a soldier? Their country. What is there for young British people to love about their country today. They are the first generation in British history who will be poorer than their parents. So what is behind them? A nation in steady decline. A nation which is less satisfying for its citizens today than it was 20 years ago. Hard to convince people to give their life for that. Maybe if they had a genuinely better future to look forward to, they may be motivated to fight. But the young look around and all they see is decline, decline, decline. It’s depressing.
