Meet David Gardner, the legendary Associate Producer and Director of Photography for "Threshold: The Blue Angels Experience". At age 94, David shares details about how he and partner Paul Marlow created cinemotography magic with the film that follows the Blue Angels during the 1970 & 1971 airshow season.
Also featured in the video is David Marlow, the owner of F4 Media Development and son of Paul Marlow, the Producer and Director of Threshold. Dave recounts his father's memories interacting with Harley Hall and Skip Umsted during the film's production.
PERSONAL NOTE FROM THE PRODUCER OF THIS VIDEO:
My grandfather is Butch Voris, the first leader of the Blue Angels. I still have the videotape of Threshold that he gave me and remember watching it with him on many occasions.
Despite being too young to have ever met Harley Hall, because of Threshold, he and the other team members from this era have been my hero since the age of four. I will continue to collect and share the memories from this great Blue Angels team and tell Harley's story to anyone that will listen.

Still my favorite video of the Blue's and of the F-4. I watched the '72 Team at Detroit Willow Run. Probably the biggest personal impact on my 54 years of Aviation Career. Thanks Paul & David!
I own a VHS cassette Collectors Edition of Threshold for over 20 years. Priceless Keepsake. The Blue Angels are the absolute BEST.
THE gold standard in aviation documentaries
I love this movie and was glad to get some insight into the making of it. Thank you
Thanks, Jeff. I watch Threshold at least a couple times a year. Many of the techniques and technology developed for this film were actually used for Top Gun. Cheers!
So cool of you to take an this task to learn more about how this movie was made and share it with us. I salute your efforts in this endeavor. Yes, Threshold is a tireless movie for me as well. I could watch it forever!
A surprise inverted flight into the Grand Canyon? Geeze. What an experience.
I must have seen this film a million times as a child. Loved it greatly, and it was immensely inspiring. My son now watches it, and I tell him about the Space Force.
God bless.
A revolutionary film for its day and still holds up today. Incredible cockpit footage and pilot dialog. Thanks for watching.
F 4S were great.
Excellent filming and thanks for sharing
Ahh the F4 Phantom aka Rhino w Loud Pedal aka Afterburner! Loved it when Reno, NV was a repair facility for the F4s!
Reno High Rollers had RC F 4S.
@@747heavyboeing3 RF-4C ----nose & radar are different, but after that it's an F-4C.
I had the VCR tape of the movie. Bought at the French air and space museum in le Bourget long time ago. It was dubbed in French and the short version of the movie .Anyway, I fell in love with the film . I was really impressed by the team and specially Harley. Only years later, when I get the internet I discovered he was shot down and became the last USN pilot missing in action the Vietnam war... God bless him.
Hi John, thanks for your comment. I remember watching Threshold for the first time when I was 4 years old. My grandfather told me about what happened to Harley and similar to you, when I got access to the internet, read as much as I could about his case. He is a true hero.
That's right! Thanks to this wonderful and timeless movie Harley will fly forever. One great way to bring him justice!
@@johnvega5836 thank you for your nice comments about my second cousin Harley Hall. I never got to meet him. I was born in 1980. I talk to his sister Gwen quite a bit. God bless
I had the book version some years ago. It was quite spectacular.
I grew up with this movie in my collection!!!!!!!!!
In my humble opinion, it's one of the best movies made about aviation. The dialog between the pilots is raw and real and the onboard cameras are unmatched! Not to mention, the pilots featured in the film are true American heros. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely agree with you!
Strategic Air Command is another great movie.
Not a documentary.
Bring the DVD and a portable player to your next coffee gab session…make new friends!
I am looking for the full Threshold poem written by the leader!
Where can I find it?
Leslie Nielsen was perfect for the films narrator imo "Can you do this"
Leslie delivers the Threshold narrative flawlessly. I still watch the film on a regular basis. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
me to
Shirley you can't be serious?
Leslie has a great voice and is a great actor
When he talks about the horn on his bike... and using it for the cockpit tone... he says there isn't such a sound... actually there is... its called an Aural Warning System and its a function of AOA (angle of attack) and serves as an audible warning of percentage of AOA. This serves as a stall warning. The tone worked in conjunction with a visual display, of up arrows, down arrows and a circle in the middle. On correct AOA the center circle is lit, no sound... but if low or high the arrows would light and there would be a tone. Funny he used 2 different tones because the real system uses several tones based on AOA... i.e., the higher the tone the higher the AOA.
I'm not sure what I was supposed to get out of this video.
