I feel like everyone is just calling ARPGs soulslikes these days even though the term Soulslikes scares away a lot of people who would otherwise enjoy an ARPG like this.
Interesting idea to put (effectively) a Style Meter into a Soulslike combat system. Curious how it ends up feeling in the end, definitely open to giving this a try.
This ticks all the boxes: - Souls Lite WITH F*IN GUNS - Camp like in Ashen - lived in towns - E.HILLMAN IS BACK FOR THE SOUNDTRACK OMG I am so hyped! It just needs to run well at launch and I'm sold. I'm happy the delays seem to have payd off.
It's not a bad game (not mind blowing or greatest game ever), this game is the equivalent of a good/decent popcorn flick movie. It's unfortunate people are not giving this game a go/chance because it got the stench of and association with a certain french-canadian "narrative consulting" company.
Big fan of Ashen, been keeping my eye ever since it was first hinted at. Very hyped. I just hope it releases with good optimization (and fsr3/3.1 perhaps?), ive been tired of big AAA titles releasing terribly... would be nice if a more medium sized studio came with more polished release

Lies of P is literally the only game that made a proper souls-like and one of its own on that (its own spin, twists, even flavour/style like being more narrative then just lore). The wikipedia soulslikes list lists 59 titles, the biggest steam curator on then lists 80. We have a total of 1 thats really soulslike(not lite) doing what the souls series do well as well or even better (depending on taste) I liked Ashen. Heck i 'loved' it, not where its soulslike formula failed but the setting and part of their early concept vision i could still see through. Ashen was a game i discovered way before it was revealed thanks to their main concept artists, i got an early peek at the games initial pitch years before the first trailer... they changed it. They pivoted from their narrative-lite and emergent narrative+coop vision with dungeoncrawl focus to making a soulslike- probably simpler to go with a formula proven then their ambitious inovative ideas... in the end it didnt make much fuss, considered a mild clunky soulslike despite its amazing world... Thats why i feel more devs should strive and look better on 'souls-lite'. We already have not one but 6-7(if you count sekiro) actual souls games that do that extremely well. Following their formula is the opposite of inovation and is inherently harder, its trying to imitate and be on par with a champion that invented the sport theyre gold medalist and the gold medalist for years in sequence. Theres also a good chance flintlock isnt lite enough and will be compared to souls, and on that comparison be tossed aside too...
Mate, I'm more than happy to get more souls likes/lites - the more the merrier 😂 I just hope that more studios manage to match the quality of FromSoft as well as the folks behind the Nioh games, and of course the Lies of P devs. Fingers crossed this game manages that feat
They are still polishing it to make sure there are no straight or white characters left in the game. Every Act needs to clearly state how being white is evil and should not be tolerated. At least thats what I hear from the consultants they hired.

Seems so promising, please dont be too disheartened by the way it's partially received online, I feel like the general notion with reactions towards trailers is heavily skewed either towards overhype or immediate disapproval, but both Ashen and Flintlock appear to be great achievements for an indie studio :) Wish thee best of luck with the release

They've basically said "Nah, we don't have something as blasé as a currency system, we have a reputation system, which functionally works the EXACT same way but when you really think about it, makes zero sense". With all that said, game looks fun. But changing currency to reputation is a real head scratcher.
Currency is currency. It's irrelevant what name you give it (as long as reputation isn't used for anything else - and I'm sure it won't be). When you spend some of your wealth, you become less wealthy. So then you need to go out and top up your currency, same as always. Perfectly fine.
The combat looks very varied and meaningful. From what does not look good - I would recommend changing the fonts. They are well readable, but they are chopped and don't really fit the style of the game. Which makes the interface look cheaper than it.

Just be aware that Sweet Baby Inc. had a hand on this game narrative and, as one of the devs that worked on this game said, "ruined the game". I like what I see, other than the stutters everywhere. I will make an informed decision when the game comes out.
@@Avoca91I saw some stuttering at the start but that's likely because the shader cache hasn't been generated manually for the game yet and they're using the default UE4 shader cache gen that makes UE4 games stutter so notoriously. Hopefully they work on that since the game looks in a near complete state now.
How? As far as I tell Xbox doesn't own A44 Games despite how Flintlock was revealed at the Xbox box showcase 2022. Even their publisher is owned by indie devs. How is they attached to any AAA studios? Xbox only had an exclusive reveal & that's all. Flintlock isn't a timed exclusive either. The platforms for it are PS5, Xbox Series, and Windows. I'd assume it simultaneously world wide release to all of the platforms on the same day. I think it will also be Day 1 on Gamepass too. Games on Gamepass doesn't mean they are owned by Xbox. Edit: According to comments, Sweet Baby Inc is attached to the writing and story. I never heard of them but apparently people hate them because SBI is a woke company and the games associated with them are considered bad like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

There is not enough variety of combinations. The weapons an axe, a sword, and a one-handed hammer feel the same both in terms of moveset and techniques.
Perhaps I don't understand your question correctly. But in the video you can see the weapon and the motion set: 2:38 Axe, 5:33 Sword, 6:39 Hammer. These are probably not all weapons, but the ones that demonstrated the same techniques and movements.
@@endrgar Dark Souls games have a lot of weapons, but very little variation in moveset within classes. Some classes will be similar anyway, axes and hammers are generally very similar for instance, and do not tend to differ too much from most swords, aside from overhead pancake moves. Spears and Halberds tend to be different, and so do thrusting swords, but I rarely use any of them anyway.

A game that has good gameplay has good gameplay, regardless of it the character is a minority or not. Whether this game's gameplay will actually be fun to play remains to be seen since it isn't out. Suicide Squad wasn't bad because of SBI. The SBI people advise on narrative, character design, dialogue, etc, but they don't advise on game mechanics and gameplay loops, and THAT is why Suicide Squad failed. Don't know if you were keeping track of that game before launch, but it was DOA back when they did their extended gameplay preview back around mid-2023, where the online response was so negative that they pushed the release back by about 5 months. And that was a response to watching a single mission, LOL. Suicide Squad failed because it's a live service looter shooter no one wanted, where all the characters practically play the same, they have like 5 different currencies, and try to sell you stuff in the store. The game sucks just on a fundamental level in terms of gameplay/gameloop. And that isn't SBI's fault because they don't advise on that stuff. If you check the Steam group, the vast majority of games that SBI have worked on that have already come out actually have good overall review scores. The console-only ones that aren't in the group are critically acclaimed by players too! So games they influence that fail are by far in the minority, and when they do, they all have glaring gameplay issues. It's obvious you just jumped on the anti-woke bandwagon without knowing the tumultuous history of the Suicide Squad game, nor have you ever engaged in *any* critical thinking or research in regards to why the very few bad SBI-advised games actually end up doing badly.

Hard agree on that one. Saying that "atmospheric storytelling" qualifies "soulslike" as it's own genre is saying that "COD-like" should be it's own genre because unlike in other FPS you have guns. Ashen is a very underrated game, it is a pity there was no sequel.
Lies of P is probably the best example of a medium sized (or even small sized) studio releasing a brilliantly optimised game

Even their publisher is owned by indie devs. How is they attached to any AAA studios? Xbox only had an exclusive reveal & that's all. Flintlock isn't a timed exclusive either. The platforms for it are PS5, Xbox Series, and Windows. I'd assume it simultaneously world wide release to all of the platforms on the same day. I think it will also be Day 1 on Gamepass too. Games on Gamepass doesn't mean they are owned by Xbox.
Edit: According to comments, Sweet Baby Inc is attached to the writing and story. I never heard of them but apparently people hate them because SBI is a woke company and the games associated with them are considered bad like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

There is not enough variety of combinations. The weapons an axe, a sword, and a one-handed hammer feel the same both in terms of moveset and techniques.

Perhaps I don't understand your question correctly. But in the video you can see the weapon and the motion set: 2:38 Axe, 5:33 Sword, 6:39 Hammer. These are probably not all weapons, but the ones that demonstrated the same techniques and movements.
@@endrgar Dark Souls games have a lot of weapons, but very little variation in moveset within classes. Some classes will be similar anyway, axes and hammers are generally very similar for instance, and do not tend to differ too much from most swords, aside from overhead pancake moves. Spears and Halberds tend to be different, and so do thrusting swords, but I rarely use any of them anyway.

A game that has good gameplay has good gameplay, regardless of it the character is a minority or not. Whether this game's gameplay will actually be fun to play remains to be seen since it isn't out.
Suicide Squad wasn't bad because of SBI. The SBI people advise on narrative, character design, dialogue, etc, but they don't advise on game mechanics and gameplay loops, and THAT is why Suicide Squad failed. Don't know if you were keeping track of that game before launch, but it was DOA back when they did their extended gameplay preview back around mid-2023, where the online response was so negative that they pushed the release back by about 5 months. And that was a response to watching a single mission, LOL.
Suicide Squad failed because it's a live service looter shooter no one wanted, where all the characters practically play the same, they have like 5 different currencies, and try to sell you stuff in the store. The game sucks just on a fundamental level in terms of gameplay/gameloop. And that isn't SBI's fault because they don't advise on that stuff. If you check the Steam group, the vast majority of games that SBI have worked on that have already come out actually have good overall review scores. The console-only ones that aren't in the group are critically acclaimed by players too! So games they influence that fail are by far in the minority, and when they do, they all have glaring gameplay issues.
It's obvious you just jumped on the anti-woke bandwagon without knowing the tumultuous history of the Suicide Squad game, nor have you ever engaged in *any* critical thinking or research in regards to why the very few bad SBI-advised games actually end up doing badly.

Hard agree on that one. Saying that "atmospheric storytelling" qualifies "soulslike" as it's own genre is saying that "COD-like" should be it's own genre because unlike in other FPS you have guns. With such arguments one only displays a lack of awareness of the genre.
