What ever your personal take on the mill is these are beautiful photographs , more importantly its great to see you photographers working together , giving everyone your perspective your way 👍 Tam.
Brilliant mate. I think you were there week before me. I thought the same as you when I got their. It does look different when your their in person. I also agree that it was had to compose due to the sky. Great images tho mate..👍
Great video Paul, we should arrange to go back to the Mill later in the year when the trees still have their leaves .............. Lovely spot to photograph 📷👍
Great video and location. Gutted as I was going to go to this location tomorrow however I have just read on the net that it’s now be completely closed off to public access altogether
Thanks for video Paul. Personally, I liked the 1st couple of photos better than the bracketed set. Nice to see Mrs C join you on these ventures. Also, seen photo's of this place in autumn, colours really 'pop'. Maybe a future venture?
Excellent video Paul, with some great tips on shooting this mill. I have 4 days around Keswick planned for mid May and this is on my list to photograph. I hope to do to come away with something good.
Terrific photos. I'd be happy with any of them but if I had to choose image at 12.30 is amazing. I haven't heard of Borrowdale Watermill. I was thinking of springtime but they may have shut it off by then. Thanks for posting
Great location there Paul and one I have seen recently on another channel where he had the same access problems as you. I suspect that this will be a location that will be off limits in the not too distant future. My favourite image is the one at 12:30 where you have managed to eliminate the sky and also got the separation between the tree branch and the watermill. The greens on the rocks bordering the stream are really vibrant and are such an integral part of the photo. Nice to see Mrs C out with you and her images were really good too 📷👏
Hi Paul an excellent vlog here some great images too. BUT can you put me right on one point I've always been led to believe the mill is on private property. Which stops me in my tracks I would love to go to the mill as I'm lucky enough to live in the lake District and it's only an hour or so's drive away from me. The reason I've posted today is I wouldn't want to see people getting hammered by the police and ultimately being taken to court. That said once again excellent vlog cheers Mike.
awesome video as always bud great tp see u out with the camera hopefully meet up some point im in yorkshire dales in june going to aysgarth fallls as well as west burton falls and cotter force might try bolton abbey too im also going upto lakes this year as well some point got to choice the flat terrains though and also a week tomorrow my episode of winterwatch will be live bbc two but take care and keep the awesome videos coming
I have been there a couple of times now, it’s my favourite location I think though you can only take so many pictures of a mill. I was a bit surprised to find that the mill itself is purely decorative and none functional, but it is effective. I do believe you are now no longer permitted to enter the grounds as it is private land. I think the owners and those that rent it got a little pissed off with photographers tipping up? Not sure if that is still the case? Thanks for sharing
Nice shots and well done reaching the spot .I think with all your skills you could clone out the left hand tree ,(worth a try) if you think. great effort . your tips are always valuable ,but at my age i forget a lot off them LOL stay safe and healthy still tough times around here with the covid.
I went in September and it is a challenging subject to capture. All the points you make about keeping the sky out of the shot are spot on , it’s awkward amongst those rocks. It’s also really dark , with a big contrast to the background. There were Private signs up when we went , so I walked up the beck. Heard that it is being turned into a holiday let. Get there while you can folks.
Looks to be a difficult location to photograph but you made the most of it. The tree trunk on the upper left is a bit of a pain alright. I usually keep a chainsaw in the boot for such eventualities 😂😂😂📷👍
I know exactly what you mean Paul. There is an old mill/wheelhouse in Dunham Park which is my local go to park ( when not jam packed with pensioners on tour ), less than 10 minutes drive from my house. In over 30 years of trying, I have never been able to make a satisfactory photograph of this otherwise most charming building. Some subjects, as attractive as they are, do not lend themselves to a photograph. Nice photos though in their own rights.
I visited in October (and got wet feet lol).. However, shot's worked! Excellent vlog again Paul. Stayed in Keswick the last two visits, but may switch back to Ambleside this year?
Next time you're out Paul, use aperture priority and try 3 shots iso 400, 640,& 800. when you have it up on your computer see if you can see much if any difference between them.
I been a couple of times, the last in June 21, Its better in Autumn I think while there's still foliage on the trees that we use to frame the Mill and there's a fair amount of water. When I was there I felt the water level was a little low. Never happy are we? The best way to go is up the left and cross the river by the mill & leave the same way the barbed wire is very comfortable. Sadly like others have said I believe the mill has been sold and its to be fenced off with higher fencing so 'togs cannot get to it.
I've visited there 3 times now. Oct 2020 there was so much water flowing it was quite sketchy and I could not get safely up to the ideal shooting spot so had to content myself with slightly more of an upstream direction but couldn't eliminate the sky completely even with autumn foliage. Went there twice in June 2021 - first time very little water flowing and then on my last day I went again as the preceding day it had rained heavily most of the day. was a bit better but not ideal. Hoping to try again in late March on way back from Skye. it's definitely all about the water flow foremost then the foliage. I do get the feeling the landowners are trying to stop people visiting as it's got quite popular with us Togs.
Excellent vlog thanks. I actually live in Ambleside and this has been on my to do list for 2 years. I always say I am waiting for the right conditions. Also not sure how easy to get to people say you have to climb over fences etc and if the river is in full flow you can not cross over. How did you and Mrs. C find it to get in? Thanks
Seemed like you fell into the trap of having an image in mind that someone else had made which you cannot shake off when trying to take a photo. That being said you shouldn't be down beat as the images are great and what a location. Great work keep it up.
i did to be honest, i normally have an idea then get somithing my style, but here there is not many ways to shoot it, i see a video today and he got a great shot..
Made a visit today in torrential rain. Sadly the mill has now been converted into a private house and it’s well sign posted no access and which way to go for the actual footpath.
Excellent vlog once again Paul. I did email you about me winning on the redraw but haven’t heard anything back, don’t know if there has been a problem when I’ve sent the email or not.

It's a lovely location, I'm off there tomorrow on a workshop.
A workshop, wow its not aloud no more.. ????

there is a private sign up the drive but we did not go up there, we walked across the river and up the other bank, no sign over there...

ill have to add one to my kit
Hi Paul, Love your pics. Just curious if there was a shot from upstream looking back to the mill.
I think there is but i run out of light to look
Plus i am not keen of looking down water i like to look up it!!

must of been a lot of water
Return during the " spring melt ".
i will try
Hi Paul, it is told that the old watermill is no longer accessible. Is that true ?
i heard that as well
I also heard that the mill is on private grounds. You can take a photo, but if the owner tells you to leave you better do so.
it always has been i think
Excellent vlog thanks. I actually live in Ambleside and this has been on my to do list for 2 years. I always say I am waiting for the right conditions. You should! as it sounds like we dont have long to get there, yes you have to walk up and cross the river.. no fence on one side (at the moment)

Paul, It is a hard place to get a clean image. Not sure what the best time to go would be.
as long as there are leave it will cover the sky, and some more water arounf the rocks..
Made a visit today in torrential rain. Sadly the mill has now been converted into a private house and it’s well sign posted no access and which way to go for the actual footpath.
There was never a path to it, you had to cross the river and walk up the back next to fence.. it was always going to become harder to shoot..
Shame the mill wasn't operational. I would imagine a picture of the wheel turning would be quite epic.
i can make it spin haha
It’s fake, it will never turn it is cosmetic these days, so I was told.
Sorry missed these old comment replies

Hi Josh, have been checking through junk email folder and found your details, will be posting it out early next week 🙂
@@denisecompton1454 cheers Denise just cause hoping to use it on my trip to Anglesey in 2 weeks time for my gcse photography.
Check now and found it in the spam
I don't know. Would a vertical pano work? I would raise the camera and not use tilt.
i did do a viertical pano, you need more water and leaves i think
I thought this was private land?
well it is
Great location done it a few month ago I have been told the farmer is putting a BIG fence up to stop us going to the mill 👎
thats about right...
