It’s actually implied that the men are infertile, not the women, especially the men from the military class who were exposed to chemicals. They are the source of the problem, but lower class men aren’t considered for the rituals and women are blamed as a matter of course.
Lola Montez I’ve read the novel. But your points suppose that a brutal government makes rational choices. That’s not what that kind of society does. Think of Stalin killing all the Jewish doctors who could have saved his life. An oppressive society doesn’t look at what will work best, it leans heavily on its own belief system even if it’s damaging to the population. Also, the novel takes from true events, but that doesn’t mean you have to read it literally. It’s not so absurd to imagine a future where military are exposed to infertility through chemicals, but even if you think it is, she uses this as a plot device to reinforce her themes rather than a statement on the actual science of fertility. Children of Men is great, but it’s certainly not trying to convey the same themes and messaging as Handmaid is.
Thats because the infertility is just an excuse! It has always been about controlling the bodys of women and generally everybody. In my opinon the religion is not really important, its justification not more. Gilead to me is less like the islamic state and more like nazi germany. Its a facist neofeudal society.

The Handmaid's Tale is based on what happened in Afghanistan when the United States gave power to the Taliban to chase Russia out of that country. Overnight the women of that country, which had stronger women representation than we do now, were delegated to property. Women found their bank accounts seized, they were punished if they spoke out. They had to paint their windows black and could only go outside with a male relative escorting them. This was allowed because this property went to those who profited from these actions. Try to imagine waking up one day and discovering you were now the property of your family and had no say in anything. Do you think you could do it? The women were publicly tortured if they did not fall into line.

Margaret Atwood specifically said she would not include anything in the book that hasn't already happened in the recent past, or is currently happening. This show is so relatable for me, (even as a so called: 'educated, privileged, white, middle class female.') I feel it deeply represents women's experiences around the world right now.
What's fascinating is the colours of their uniforms symbolises who they are and their status. Red generally symbolises lust, strength, courage, desire and is believed to raise blood pressure and respiratory rate. Blue/green symbolises power, growth, fertility, loyalty and health. Fair play if this was done intentionally :)
The wives wear blue because of the Virgin Mary's robe, and the handmaids wear red because it's associated with the Magdalen and thus with sexuality. The thing I wonder is why they decided to go with such muted, depressed colors. In the book they were described as bright, so you could easily distinguish them from a distance.

I conpletely understand that ecertone suffers under the .02% population. Children suffer by reprogramming and traumatized from being separated from their parents. Men killed on spot or sent to colonies if they arent already apart of the belief or willing to adapt to their regime. I rooted for him til i find out how they got together anf how he handled it.

Everyday women's rights are so very tenuous regardless of political climate. It's an uphill battle for all of us. We need to do it together. However, since they ARE married, they cannot be taken away from their husband, and therefore, cannot become Handmaids, who were chosen as a way to "redeem" themselves from their past "lust" (remarriage, children outside of wedlock, homosexuality, etc...). But at the end of the novel, that takes place in the future during a conference (given by men scholars), it is stated that with the systematic repression of little acts of rebellion, Gilead was "dangerously" lacking Handmaids, so they decided to declare all marriages prior to the regime's rise to power illegal, and at that moment Econowives could become Handmaids. ^^
EVERYONE is under the boot in Giliad. Even Fred is being held down when being around his peers. Aunt Lydia has several moments of doubt and regret. Not one person (except the truly higher ups) seem to enjoy anything of whats going on. My only real complain about this show is that June has way too much plot amor at times. It's like they know she's the main character. She gets away with so much stuff all the time, while people around her gets their eyes taken out for saying ''fuck''. Everyone in Giliad is a two-faced bipolar mess. One scene is filled with compassion, hope and comfort and the very next is screaming and violence. They did a very good job of capturing the despair in all of these people. Also, Hollywood should take notes of June - THIS IS HOW YOU DO STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS!! She has flaws, he makes mistakes, she's selfish, she's HUMAN and yet she prevails. Not because she's a super special and awesome woman but because she is a clever and strong person!

I couldn't watch The Handmaid's Tale past the first 3 or 4 episodes...I grew up in a Christian fundamentalist cult, so Gilead hits a little too close to home for me. There was hardly any individuality, for a time we couldn't listen to music if it had drums in it (not even if it was Christian). Our reading was very restricted, and as far as reading the Bible was concerned, we could only read from the KJV (the "true" Bible). AFABs could only wear skirts and dresses (because pants are "men's clothes") and nothing too short or tight (for modesty's sake, otherwise you were asking for it, but if you got r*ped or assaulted it would still be your fault for somehow leading him on). AMABs weren't allowed to wear skirts or dresses either. No education on gender, sexuality, or general self-expression whatsoever, in fact it's pretty much a sin to express yourself in any way and your own "fleshly" desires (because your identity is supposed to be "in Christ," and "you are bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body and spirit which are God's"). Because "the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked," you are taught not to trust your emotions or experiences, unless they line up with the Bible, or more accurately how the pastors and men interpret the Bible (which is interesting, because how can we be certain that they're preaching truth from God and not following their own wicked hearts?). Women are supposed to be submissive to their husbands of course, as is biblical, and child abuse is not only normal, but encouraged, as it is also technically biblical. If you don't physically "discipline" your kids, you are seen as being unfaithful to God's Word. Children are pretty much seen as little slaves and little soldiers. You're trained from young to be "in the Lord's army." We went to church 3 times a week and knocked on doors of people's houses to evangelise or "witness" to them, as we called it. Kids generally went to either the school provided by the church or homeschooled (I was the latter), using Christian curriculum of course. That way, the brainwashing sticks in your mind even further. Women are to get married (to a man of course) and to have children. Women in particular never have their own autonomy; as children they are under their father's authority, as wives they are under their husband's authority, and if they somehow don't get married or their husband dies they are under their pastor's authority. Marriages are generally arranged (or almost), and getting to marriage requires first going through the process of "courtship" (chaperoned dating, and no s*x or kissing before marriage, ever). Divorce is pretty much never an option, unless your life is in danger (even then, expect to be judged regardless, because you should've known better or seen it coming). Abortion is seen as murder, many fundamentalist Christians aren't opposed to the death penalty as the price for committing or participating in an abortion. And if there's an unforgivable sin, it's probably being gay. You're seen as either sick or disgusting, or mentally ill. In other words, you need some conversion therapy so God can straighten you out, in more ways than one. Young earth creationism, many are conspiracy theorists and antivaxxers, you get the picture which type of crowd we're dealing with. To summarise, the mindset behind religious extremism is terrifying, and the lengths that people will go to in the name of God can be genuinely horrifying.

Extremely late comment but all this makes me think about is what’s happening in Alabama and abortion, a majority of men voted against something that was once a woman’s right and I’m sure many (while they may not have explicitly said so) had religious reasonings for being against it. While it is a little extreme to call this the beginning of a similar situation happening, it could very well happen if we’re not careful.
Let me help: • Placing restrictions on what health insurance can cover mostly in regards to women's reproductive rights • Actively making attempts and passing bills that limit Planned Parenthood • Changing the definition of domestic abuse to only fit behaviors that you could technically be prosecuted for and • Passing laws that discriminate against sex workers. Add to these his sexist tendencies and misogynistic remarks about the women he doesn't like (i.e. attacking Hillary's appearance and the infamous "grab them by the genitals" remark) and you get someone who's throwing America's progress backwards. Just a girl in the west “chooses” to shave her legs because she’s been taught that it’s attractive and attractive = aspirational, a Muslim girl may “choose” to cover because she’s been taught it shows modesty and modesty = aspirational. That is entirely different. The Chinese Dynasty used concubines (glorified Prostitutes, who exclusively served the high status individual who owned them). The handmaid system of Gilead is quite different. A handmaid is not the property of the man of the house, she is state property, loaned to the household so that they can bear children, despite the wife's lack of fertility. By law, any sexual activity with a handmaid outside of the ceremony, is legally adultery in the handmaid system. In the concubine/harem system, there are no such restrictions, a concubine can be used sexually at her owner's will alone but any children born to her will not be considered legitimate. A child born of a handmaid bears the status of a child born to the husband and wife within the household, and has no relation to the handmaid following weaning.

I can see why critics draw parallels between Gilead and the modern US. But in my opinion, the regime's strict control over the use of language, i.e what one may say, and how they say it, bears more respemlance in my mind to the European Left. I feel like people who compare Gilead to the modern US just didn’t even read the book/ watch the show. Or they’re extremely exaggerating. To me I think the book still serves as a good warning but if anything it’s almost a bit outdated now. The main thing that caused the fall of the US to go so smoothly was lack of communication and information. With everyone having the Internet in their pocket now I feel like we’d be able to rise up and stop the hostile takeover, or hell contact other countries about it before it’s too late. Lola Montez I’ve read the novel. But your points suppose that a brutal government makes rational choices. That’s not what that kind of society does. Think of Stalin killing all the Jewish doctors who could have saved his life. An oppressive society doesn’t look at what will work best, it leans heavily on its own belief system even if it’s damaging to the population. Also, the novel takes from true events, but that doesn’t mean you have to read it literally. It’s not so absurd to imagine a future where military are exposed to infertility through chemicals, but even if you think it is, she uses this as a plot device to reinforce her themes rather than a statement on the actual science of fertility. Children of Men is great, but it’s certainly not trying to convey the same themes and messaging as Handmaid is.

Overnight the women of that country, which had stronger women representation than we do now, were delegated to property. Women found their bank accounts seized, they were punished if they spoke out. They had to paint their windows black and could only go outside with a male relative escorting them. This was allowed because this property went to those who profited from these actions.
Try to imagine waking up one day and discovering you were now the property of your family and had no say in anything. Do you think you could do it? The women were publicly tortured if they did not fall into line.

The wives wear blue because of the Virgin Mary's robe, and the handmaids wear red because it's associated with the Magdalen and thus with sexuality. The thing I wonder is why they decided to go with such muted, depressed colors. In the book they were described as bright, so you could easily distinguish them from a distance.

Thank you for this video. It really outlines the issues for freedom for women and men. Only a few of the men benefit, but many do not. Everyday women's rights are so very tenuous regardless of political climate. It's an uphill battle for all of us. We need to do it together.

However, since they ARE married, they cannot be taken away from their husband, and therefore, cannot become Handmaids, who were chosen as a way to "redeem" themselves from their past "lust" (remarriage, children outside of wedlock, homosexuality, etc...). But at the end of the novel, that takes place in the future during a conference (given by men scholars), it is stated that with the systematic repression of little acts of rebellion, Gilead was "dangerously" lacking Handmaids, so they decided to declare all marriages prior to the regime's rise to power illegal, and at that moment Econowives could become Handmaids. ^^
EVERYONE is under the boot in Giliad. Even Fred is being held down when being around his peers. Aunt Lydia has several moments of doubt and regret. Not one person (except the truly higher ups) seem to enjoy anything of whats going on.
My only real complain about this show is that June has way too much plot amor at times. It's like they know she's the main character. She gets away with so much stuff all the time, while people around her gets their eyes taken out for saying ''fuck''.
Everyone in Giliad is a two-faced bipolar mess. One scene is filled with compassion, hope and comfort and the very next is screaming and violence. They did a very good job of capturing the despair in all of these people.
Also, Hollywood should take notes of June - THIS IS HOW YOU DO STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS!! She has flaws, he makes mistakes, she's selfish, she's HUMAN and yet she prevails. Not because she's a super special and awesome woman but because she is a clever and strong person!

I couldn't watch The Handmaid's Tale past the first 3 or 4 episodes...I grew up in a Christian fundamentalist cult, so Gilead hits a little too close to home for me.
There was hardly any individuality, for a time we couldn't listen to music if it had drums in it (not even if it was Christian). Our reading was very restricted, and as far as reading the Bible was concerned, we could only read from the KJV (the "true" Bible).
AFABs could only wear skirts and dresses (because pants are "men's clothes") and nothing too short or tight (for modesty's sake, otherwise you were asking for it, but if you got r*ped or assaulted it would still be your fault for somehow leading him on). AMABs weren't allowed to wear skirts or dresses either.
No education on gender, sexuality, or general self-expression whatsoever, in fact it's pretty much a sin to express yourself in any way and your own "fleshly" desires (because your identity is supposed to be "in Christ," and "you are bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body and spirit which are God's"). Because "the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked," you are taught not to trust your emotions or experiences, unless they line up with the Bible, or more accurately how the pastors and men interpret the Bible (which is interesting, because how can we be certain that they're preaching truth from God and not following their own wicked hearts?).
Women are supposed to be submissive to their husbands of course, as is biblical, and child abuse is not only normal, but encouraged, as it is also technically biblical. If you don't physically "discipline" your kids, you are seen as being unfaithful to God's Word. Children are pretty much seen as little slaves and little soldiers. You're trained from young to be "in the Lord's army."
We went to church 3 times a week and knocked on doors of people's houses to evangelise or "witness" to them, as we called it. Kids generally went to either the school provided by the church or homeschooled (I was the latter), using Christian curriculum of course. That way, the brainwashing sticks in your mind even further.
Women are to get married (to a man of course) and to have children. Women in particular never have their own autonomy; as children they are under their father's authority, as wives they are under their husband's authority, and if they somehow don't get married or their husband dies they are under their pastor's authority. Marriages are generally arranged (or almost), and getting to marriage requires first going through the process of "courtship" (chaperoned dating, and no s*x or kissing before marriage, ever). Divorce is pretty much never an option, unless your life is in danger (even then, expect to be judged regardless, because you should've known better or seen it coming). Abortion is seen as murder, many fundamentalist Christians aren't opposed to the death penalty as the price for committing or participating in an abortion.
And if there's an unforgivable sin, it's probably being gay. You're seen as either sick or disgusting, or mentally ill. In other words, you need some conversion therapy so God can straighten you out, in more ways than one.
Young earth creationism, many are conspiracy theorists and antivaxxers, you get the picture which type of crowd we're dealing with.
To summarise, the mindset behind religious extremism is terrifying, and the lengths that people will go to in the name of God can be genuinely horrifying.
Eerily similar things happen under Taliban, isis, etc. The whole concept of one book from thousands of years ago governing humanity is terrifying.

Extremely late comment but all this makes me think about is what’s happening in Alabama and abortion, a majority of men voted against something that was once a woman’s right and I’m sure many (while they may not have explicitly said so) had religious reasonings for being against it. While it is a little extreme to call this the beginning of a similar situation happening, it could very well happen if we’re not careful.

• Passing laws that discriminate against sex workers.
Add to these his sexist tendencies and misogynistic remarks about the women he doesn't like (i.e. attacking Hillary's appearance and the infamous "grab them by the genitals" remark) and you get someone who's throwing America's progress backwards. Just a girl in the west “chooses” to shave her legs because she’s been taught that it’s attractive and attractive = aspirational, a Muslim girl may “choose” to cover because she’s been taught it shows modesty and modesty = aspirational. We are all affected by the societal norms around us so its important we make those norms as fair as possible.

its a modern tale/version of the Harem system.
That is entirely different. The Chinese Dynasty used concubines (glorified Prostitutes, who exclusively served the high status individual who owned them). The handmaid system of Gilead is quite different. A handmaid is not the property of the man of the house, she is state property, loaned to the household so that they can bear children, despite the wife's lack of fertility. By law, any sexual activity with a handmaid outside of the ceremony, is legally adultery in the handmaid system. In the concubine/harem system, there are no such restrictions, a concubine can be used sexually at her owner's will alone but any children born to her will not be considered legitimate. A child born of a handmaid bears the status of a child born to the husband and wife within the household, and has no relation to the handmaid following weaning.
The womens rights in Iran was stripped in 1979 only 40 years ago. They dressed and had the same rights as most american women. Look at them now! crazy thought and scary as well.

Trump is being courted by the Evangelical right because he is useful to them, a necessary evil, if you will. Pursuant to your request, I will attempt to clear up questions you have about the Federal Reserve Bank (FED). I spent much time researching the FED and these are the shocking and revealing conclusions.
THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANK IS A PRIVATE COMPANY. Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution states that Congress shall have the power to coin (create) money and regulate the value thereof. Today however, the FED, which is a privately owned company, controls and profits by printing money through the Treasury, and regulating its value.
The FED began with approximately 300 people or banks that became owners (stockholders purchasing stock at $100 per share - the stock is not publicly traded) in the Federal Reserve Banking System. They make up an international banking cartel of wealth beyond comparison (Reference 1, 14). The FED banking system collects billions of dollars (Reference 8, 17) in interest annually and distributes the profits to its shareholders. The Congress illegally gave the FED the right to print money (through the Treasury) at no interest to the FED. The FED creates money from nothing, and loans it back to us through banks, and charges interest on our currency. The FED also buys Government debt with money printed on a printing press and charges U.S. taxpayers interest. Many Congressmen and Presidents say this is fraud (Reference 1,2,3,5,17).
Who actually owns the Federal Reserve Central Banks? The ownership of the 12 Central banks, a very well kept secret, has been revealed:

These bankers are connected to London Banking Houses which ultimately control the FED. When England lost the Revolutionary War with America (our forefathers were fighting their own government), they planned to control us by controlling our banking system, the printing of our money, and our debt (Reference 4, 22).
The individuals listed below owned banks which in turn owned shares in the FED. The banks listed below have significant control over the New York FED District, which controls the other 11 FED Districts. These banks also are partly foreign owned and control the New York FED District Bank.

How did it happen? After previous attempts to push the Federal Reserve Act through Congress, a group of bankers funded and staffed Woodrow Wilson's campaign for President. He had committed to sign this act. In 1913, a Senator, Nelson Aldrich, maternal grandfather to the Rockefellers, pushed the Federal Reserve Act through Congress just before Christmas when much of Congress was on vacation (Reference 3, 4, 5). When elected, Wilson passed the FED. Later, Wilson remorsefully replied (referring to the FED), "I have unwittingly ruined my country" (Reference 17, P. 31). Now the banks financially back sympathetic candidates. Not surprisingly, most of these candidates are elected (Reference 1, P. 208-210, Reference 12, P. 235, Reference 14, P. 36). The bankers employ members of the Congress on weekends (nickname T&T club -out Thursday...-in Tuesday) with lucrative salaries (Reference 1, P. 209). Additionally, the FED started buying up the media in the 1930's and now owns or significantly influences most of it
(Reference 3, 10, 11, P. 145).
Presidents Lincoln, Jackson, and Kennedy tried to stop this family of bankers by printing U.S. dollars without charging the taxpayers interest (Reference 4). Today, if the government runs a deficit, the FED prints dollars through the U.S. Treasury, buys the debt, and the dollars are circulated into the economy. In 1992, taxpayers paid the FED banking system $286 billion in interest on debt the FED purchased by printing money virtually cost free (Reference 12, P. 265). Forty percent of our personal federal income taxes goes to pay this interest. The FED's books are not open to the public. Congress has yet to audit it.
Congressman Wright Patman was Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Banking and Currency for 40 years. For 20 of those years, he introduced legislation to repeal the Federal Reserve Banking Act of 1913. Congressman Henry Gonzales, Chairman of a banking committee, introduces legislation to repeal the Federal Reserve Banking Act of 1913 nearly every year. It's always defeated, the media remains silent, and the public never learns the truth. The same bankers who own the FED control the media and give huge political contributions to sympathetic members of Congress (Reference 12, P. 155-163, Reference 22, P. 158, 159, 166). THE FED FEARS THE POPULATION WILL BECOME AWARE OF THIS FRAUD AND DEMAND CHANGE. We, the People, are at fault for being passive and allowing this to continue.

I feel like people who compare Gilead to the modern US just didn’t even read the book/ watch the show. Or they’re extremely exaggerating. To me I think the book still serves as a good warning but if anything it’s almost a bit outdated now. The main thing that caused the fall of the US to go so smoothly was lack of communication and information. With everyone having the Internet in their pocket now I feel like we’d be able to rise up and stop the hostile takeover, or hell contact other countries about it before it’s too late. If people actually knew what the hell was going on early on they’d at least form a better resistance group before the caste system was put in place.
