    I always try and leave a comment on especially useful videos. Your video *really* worked out for me after struggling with a BUNCH of less-than-helpful advice on internet forums. Your directions worked as advertised! Thanks, man!

    Thank you Sreedhar, you have been extremelly helpful!
    I have placed my timecapsule in the center of the house (1st floor) connected to the fios router via ethernet cable (2 rooms away) and now I get a great signal on the second floor, first floor and the basement!
    Thank you!

    You are the awesomest!!!!
    Just got a new Apple Extreme to replace my old 2007 version and used your instructions since I have that Actiontec Router. It worked like a charm.
    You should know that I've had to set up my Airport Extreme with the Actiontec before and I would get different configuration options from Apple IT Help. And then the Fios people really didn't know the Apple products well and it would mess things up every time my WiFi went out.
    So If you have the Apple Extreme, you can use these same instructions and now my Wifi goes throughout my whole house.
    Thank you Sreedhar!!!!

      Hello Dianna, Thank you for the nice comment. You have made my day :).
      And also thanks for the tip about Apple Extreme. Never used it but good to know that it'd work for this product as well.
      Thanks again,
      Sreedhar.

    You are spectacular! Thank you!
    I just got the tall Time Capsule, and the radio interference with my FiOS router got really bad. This fixed everything!

    thank you thank you thank you. I spent nearly 3 hours yesterday on the phone with Apple and chatting with Roku and Verizon--that's after previous chats and calls with Verizon. I kept telling them about the conflict with the Fios router and Time Capsule. Apple suggested this may be the problem; Roku could do all they could do, but Verizon was not getting it. I gave up and resolved to go on my own. Your video helped enormously. My only suggestion is that initially there was an error message with time capsule, but I did a complete shut down and restart of everything and that resolved it.

    Hi Fredy, I am not sure what exactly are the differences but this is what I found: "Rev. F has been updated to include Wireless N and support for the MoCA 1.1 standard". Having mentioned this, I don't think there would be a problem with Rev. E. You can safely set up Time Capsule with Rev. E. Good luck.

    Thanks Sreedhar! Very helpful. To Joerel’s point, I took your instructions and first set up the Airport then went into FIOS router and turned it off. Seemed to work that way as well.
    I named my wireless network from the airport the same name as what was on the FIOS router and gave the same password as the FIOS network as well. My thought was that all my devices would not have to be reset since they’re already using that same network name and password. This didn’t totally work though. I still had to reselect the new network and enter a password on my devices even though I had given the new network and pw the same values as the one I turned off.
    Anyway, yours were the best instructions I found. Thank you!

    • @sreedharmanchu
      @sreedharmanchu  11 лет назад

      Hi Dean, Thanks for mentioning it. I'm sure others will find it very useful. It didn't occur to me that people would try to keep the same name and completely overlooked informing about it. Yes, since the MAC addresses of WiFi radios on Verizon device and Time Capsule are different, your devices (cell phones and computers) would not be able to negotiate at all with the Time Capsule even when you keep the same SSID. This is good because think what would happen if your neighbor gives the same name for his network as well. Names are just for our convenience. At the end of the day everything comes down to MAC addresses in hexadecimal numbers.

    I have never owned an airport extreme and so I can not comment on it. I got my first TC almost 5 months back and initially I used it just for backing up my mac. Then, I set it up what it was meant for as I wanted to do the backups wireless. I couldn't be more happier with it's performance. It's wireless reach is really good and also backups happen wirelessly. I definitely think this is much easier to use than verizon router.

    I don't keep my mac at home on all the time and having TC makes it possible for me to access my files from office or from anywhere in the world. This I think is great. Overall, I highly recommend TC. Being an Apple product it works really well with all other apple products. By the way, you can even modify the settings from iPhone or iPad which is very convenient when there are friends visiting the place and you want to give them temporary access to your network. There are many more features.

    Sreedhar, great video, very clear and easy to understand (much more so than other similar videos). Thx for making it, very valuable. With your video, I was able to understand and setup the Apple Time Capsule as a 802.11ac-capable wireless access point - and my MacBook Pro and my wife's Mac Air (both 802.11ac) are now, of course, blazingly fast compared to the Verizon MI424WR Rev. I router. My Cisco Certified Network Associate class just studied the wireless topic, and for the first time, I understand what the Apple Time Capsule / Apple Airport Express is doing and why, and how and why it needs to interact as a wireless access point only, leaving the Verizon router to do continue to do the routing, DHCP, and NAT. Now with the Apple Time Capsule, even my older 802.11n devices are performing better (iPads, older iPhones, older MacBook Pro, Windows PC - clearly, the Apple wireless access point and antennas are well superior to the Verizon router's. :-)

  • @sreedharmanchu
    @sreedharmanchu  11 лет назад

    Yes, that's right. If you'd like to keep the same name for the network make sure that your devices forget the other network and reconfigure to connect to the new network. If you seem to have problems for your new devices connecting to the new network try rebooting them.

    Frankly speaking, I never tested the guest network. I am away for a conference right now and I will test it as soon as I'm home. I will let you know how it goes. I believe it should work as it has nothing to do with bridge mode. Just to make sure, you don't have timed access on this, right?

  • @sreedharmanchu
    @sreedharmanchu  11 лет назад

    Hi Nixon, Yes, that is normal. It is just a security measure. If you know the password just keep on typing without having to worry about the asterisks and you'll get to the FIOS router settings interface. If you'd like to use capsule then it is better to turn the FIOS one off. Generally, from my experience capsule works really well with apple devices (apple ecosystem). I am just not sure whether it'd be faster though.

    Sreedhar, thank you for the clear and simple instructions on setup. I set up my Airport Extreme 6th Gen with FIOS. One question -- does the Guest Network work on your Airport Extreme in this configuration? Your instructions, and the Airport Utility itself, were simple to follow, but I cannot access the Guest Network. I have seen other postings elsewhere (e.g., Apple discussion forum) that state that the Guest Network feature will not work when the Airport Extreme is in Bridge Mode. Any idea?

    Sreedhar, so I guess by following your steps on the video, I should be able to disable my fios network and create a new one that works with time capsule?

  • @sreedharmanchu
    @sreedharmanchu  11 лет назад

    Yes, definitely. Because Time Capsule supports 802.11n. Since we connect our devices to TC which is connected to your actiontec router through ethernet cable your devices should get 802.11n speeds as long as these devices it self can support 802.11n.

  • @beach759
    @beach759 11 лет назад

    Sreedhar, thanks for the reply. Correct, I do not have "Timed Access" selected under "Access Control."
    I just found a post on Apple Support that says Guest Network will not work if AE is in Bridge Mode. Instead, "DHCP and NAT" must be selected for Router Mode. But I don't think that's compatible with connecting the AE to the Actiontec FIOS router, is it? RUclips won't let me post the link; Google "apple support ht3477" to find it.
    Oh well, Guest Network would have been nice feature to have.

    Hello Sreedhar, thanks for the great, simple instruction. I will also be setting up a Time Capsule as an access point together with the same Verizon router. I will, however need to set up two additional access points on the same network using Apple Express...I'm assuming that I should set those the same way as the Time Capsule. Should I worry about assigning the wifi channels manually or will that be done automatically?

  • @joeeznutz
    @joeeznutz 11 лет назад

    After completing these steps will the Time Capsule work if I disconnect the cord going from the FIOS Router to the Time Capsule. Is this the same as *extending* the range of the wireless network without attaching a long cord.

    Sreedhar: an excellent video. I have a follow up question: what shall be the above procedure if I want to use TC as a true wireless router (and not only as a wireless access point), while maintaining the FIOS box ONLY as a large modem.
    Many thanks

      Sreedhar Manchu
      Sreedhar: I meanwhile tested it and am pleased to report that it works. Essentially, you are configuring it by bridging Time Capsule to the existing router while doing a physical ethernet connection between any LAN port on the router and WAN port on the Time Capsule. Essentially, you have two networks: one that you may use internally (Time Capsule) and the other (old one) via the Router. The old network you can continue to use as a guest network or simply disengage at the router and use the old router as a big Modem. At any rate these two networks will not interfere as they are on different channels plus NAT addresses are not doubling. The Prime DNS (old router) is still 192.168.1.1. and Time Capsule address is just a sub (such as 192.168.1.x), as much as any other device under 192.168.1.1.
      I still have question for you if you would be kind investigating: under the above description, can you please determine whether the same device (say the wireless network printer) can become part of BOTH networks, so that participants in both networks under 192.168.1.1 can utilize this device (ie printer). If you positively determine the way how to do it, please post the steps necessary to configure it successfully.
      Many thanks for your continuous effort

    Hello Sreedhar, thank you for you this video it was very helpful. I wanted to ask your opinion about using the actiontec router for wifi and having the airport extreme used only for time capsule backup. The reason I am thinking of doing this is that along with my new actiontec router, it also came with an 5G extender that is not compatible with Apple. So if I do everything you show in the video but instead, leave the wireless on the actiontec and off on the APE would I be able to accomplish this. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Sreedhar, thanks for this very helpful instruction video. I am going to try my airport time capsule with my verizon fios router. I have watched your video and taken notes. However before I take the plunge, I wanted to ask you if somehow things don't work and I've already lost connection with my network because I have turned my wireless radio off in the verizon router, how do I get back to turn it on while trying to figure out what to do next? thanks

    • @sreedharmanchu
      @sreedharmanchu  11 лет назад

      Hi Joerel, You can use ethernet cable to connect your laptop/desktop to connect to verizon router and then open 192.168.1.1 in the browser. This way you can always go back. Good luck.

  • @TekkyT

    I was thinking about buying this to extend the range of my internet and get better speeds, I would need to keep these connected via ethernet? And that could possibly remove slow spots in my home? I'm kind of confused as to exactly what a "bridge" is. I've never done this and have seen other videos where they don't even go into their verizon router online interface (192.168.1.1) and they just simply go into bridge mode and they say it's done. Is that the case? or am I just going to be messing everything up doing that?

  • @EricDuboisVideos

    Thanks Sreedhar. This helped a lot, but my guest network is still not working with this setup. Can you share the settings to change to make that work?
    Also, it is not necessary to disable wireless from the ActionTec router. You can keep it active and have an additional wifi network (as long as you keep them on different channels).

    • @sreedharmanchu
      @sreedharmanchu  10 лет назад

      Hi Eric, That's right. There is no need to disable wireless on ActionTec router. I should have mentioned that. I wanted to have just one wireless network. Regarding the guest network, unfortunately it never worked for me in bridge mode. Now I have optimum and so it is in DHCP and NAT mode and guest network is working great. I will post it here if I find anything useful on the net. Thanks for the comment.

    • @sreedharmanchu
      @sreedharmanchu  10 лет назад

      Eric Dubois Cool as long as you're ok with that double natting. If you keep it in dhcp (instead of static), the other thing is you can reach your disk over wan using your icloud account. Otherwise, Back to My Mac won't work if I remember right. The dot goes yellow if it is static. At least that was the case before.

    Hi Sreedhar. When I type in 192.68.1.1 it takes me to the verizon screen, I enter my username and when entering the password it does not take it, I mean I type in one letter and it shows 3 or 4 little asterisks ....
    Anyway I was able to set up time capsule without that step by just hooking up the router to the time capsule through an ethernet cable, but now I have 2 networks: the one from fios I had before and the one I created. Is this ok? Does it matter? is the new one I created faster?

  • @sreedharmanchu
    @sreedharmanchu  11 лет назад

    No, it won't work if you disconnect the cable from the FIOS router. At all times it has to be connected to the FIOS router. This procedure is not extending the wireless network. In this procedure FIOS device is the router and Time Capsule is the wireless access point. In a way for FIOS router time capsule is just another device that is connected to it over ethernet. You can see it if you logon to FIOS router.

    Hi, I am having a bit of trouble understanding your pronunciation. When you are talking about plugging in the time capsule to the modem, you say to plug the ethernet cable into a LAN setting on the modem, and then plugging the other end into a "LAN" or a "WAN" port on the Time Capsule? Thanks for clarifying.

    • @sreedharmanchu
      @sreedharmanchu  9 лет назад +1

      On Time capsule cable should be connected to WAN port.

  • @sreedharmanchu
    @sreedharmanchu  11 лет назад

    This should not happen if you put the time capsule in bridge mode. Are you sure the connection is in bridge mode?

  • @U2GuitarTutorials
    @U2GuitarTutorials 10 лет назад

    The problem with changing the Time Capsule to bridge mode is you lose the guest wireless connection. My guest was not working, and when I went to Apple support it said that DHCP/NAT has to be enabled for the guest network to work. Does your guest network work? When I changed back from bridge to DHCP/NAT, then the guest network works. So how do you use the Apple Time Capsule WITH the guest network?

    • @sreedharmanchu
      @sreedharmanchu  10 лет назад

      Yes, that is right. I always thought there could be someway to make it work. But, it makes sense why it doesn't work in bridge mode (it doesn't have any control over address scheming, etc; it is just a bridge. It just can not create a new network). Thanks for mentioning it here.

    Hi Sreedhar, Excellent clear and concise video. I am trying to add an HP LaserJet wireless printer to the mix and am having major problems. Apple support advised me to select the DHCP and NAT mode on the Apple router since I could not ping the printer (which had an Actiontec IP address) from my laptop (which was also assigned a similar address). I was then told to set the Actiontec router up in Bridge Mode which the Actiontec rep claims cannot be done (I'm not sure I'm getting the correct info from him). It's all getting a bit out of my realm of understanding and now I have a non-working wireless laser printer. Any ideas if there's a solution? You can reply here or email me at erik.friis at me.com. I appreciate any help with this.
