I have this plane and the receiver that came with it bound to my Radio MasterTX16S. Most of XK's products use a flysky protocol. It's very aerobatic, but it does have a stall tendency if you attempt some stunts at slower speeds. It's really a beautiful plane in the sky and sitting on the tarmac.....

THANK YOU so much for doing this video!! I am new and was getting a little worried when reading the manual, which is half in Chinese. Being this is my first plane also, I was getting a little worried about not having anyone to talk to about the building of the plane. Thank you for going through everything that you did, including the valuable information on the battery topic!
Brian, THANK YOU. For a minute I got my hopes up about this plane but you proved crystal clearly what I was worried about: The XK A300 is exactly 100% as frustrating and disappointing as the XK A280 P51D Mustang. I looked in your videos and didn't see a review of the A280, but I owned one for a couple months and I HATED IT. And the reasons I hated it were PRECISELY the same things you're talking about with this one. The both look amazing. They both fly smoothly. They both have a reasonable amount of power. BUT...BUT...BUT... The A280 flew exactly as frustratingly as this one, and for exactly the same reasons. Stick inputs were like mild suggestions. Rolls were painfully slow. Yaw response was nearly non-existant. It was terribly frustrating because it HAD SOOOO MUCH potential, but it missed the mark by a MILE. From this video (again...THANK YOU BRIAN...) I now know crystal clearly that the new A300 is simply a re-packaged A280, and with 100% of the same strengths and weaknesses. I hated the A280, even after binding it to my TX16S and after making every tweak and trick and adjustment I could think of, that I finally had to sell it off and wash my hands of it. It was SO disconcerting! I had absolutely no confidence flying it, despite me being a fairly competent pilot (flying fixed wings since 2018), and that's no fun. I never had any confidence that I'd be able to save it from the inevitable "oops", and I want nothing to do with any plane like that. It made me ANXIOUS and therefore simply was not enjoyable. XK...GET IT TOGETHER, for Pete's sake!!
Hope you enjoy it! This plane is a beauty, but leaves me wanting on flight controls. I might need to try this one on my Jumper (OpenTX transmitter) so I can get out of the auto-leveling, and just leave the stabilizer on.
This is a very cool looking plane. Now, I realize you are reviewing this as it is out of the box. I also think it is great that you are showing the deficiencies of it. It could be a nice flyer but it is let down by the bad electronics. I'm thinking toss the tx and rx. Install a Lemon gyro receiver and bind it to a Radio Master TX16S. Then this will be a nice plane.
I wish xk would stop doing this. They make some beautiful planes, but they all fly like crap because of the electronics. Exceptions being the beaver and a800
The real staggerwing does have retractable gear. My dad and uncle owned the last one built. And it was in a museum for a while and now it is in Kansas some where. The director of the tv show dynasty in the 80 bought it from my dad.
The Stagger Wing! Still have my FMS version- great flying plane-though I did manage to fly it into the side of a hangar! Still flies great,! (When you were pressing the buttons, my garage door was going up and down…)
LOL - Very nice!!! So I can come and take your walker while I'm in town ??? ;) LOL (maybe I'll steal the list of things not to talk about, and edit it, then put it back!!!!)
The best thing that you could do for this particular airplane, is to ditch that horrible controller and get a Radiomaster tx16s with the 4 in 1 protocol module to operate the model. Also Brian and camera crew, please please please store those batteries in a metal ammo can and not on your counter. I know that it's a rarity but if one of those batteries light off, you could possibly catch your entire house on fire and lose everything.
As many new comers that join this site - two lessons should always be taught and taught first. Battery care where ALL batteries should be stored in a proper metal container preferably in the garage. And never install the propeller until the plane is fully assembled, tested and ready to fly. Anything less is giving out dangerous information and will sooner or later cause someone and their family a world of grief. Trust me.
Hello Brian, great videos, I have learned a good deal by watching your channel, thank you, it helps a lot. I would like to see you build the Freewing F 14 Tomcat 80 mm EDF. I think it would be a good challenge and learning experience for those of us that like big jets...Happy holiday...
I too would like to build that plane, and would LOVE to work with MotionRC, the distributors [protected] for North America (or at least the USA market). I've worked with Wess. He and I would love to work together, but his bosses don't want to do it. Pretty frustrating...we've had this question THOUSANDS of times. Might need to start another - annoy the heck out of them until they say "yes" campaign ;)
I have an odd question Brian I purchased the XK DHC-2 A600 cub. I love it . but I know that buyplane flies like crap so after watching this video, is it plausible for me to take the receiver board out of the cub, which is actually in all of the K helicopters as well with the S-FHSS protocol and convert it to fly with it without actually having that plane to see what would your thoughts be on that any info you could recommend I would highly appreciate. Thank you, Brian.
That's not a bad idea! That being said, if I were going to do RC "surgery" on this plane I'd be inclined to get an AS3X and SAFE equipped multi-purpose RX brick, and see how to make it work, BUT - I wouldn't do it. Here's why... I'm not in a position to do it now, and haven't given it any SERIOUS thought. This would take some pretty serious work, but I'm 100% certain a motivated, and tech savvy individual could do it. Wish I could help, but to me...these "toy" grade (this one is REALLY close to "Hobby Grade") airplanes - they're really kinda "pass or fail" to me. If I can make them fly good, I will LOVE them like their 2m counterparts, but if they fly like a toy grade plane, we do it to share it with people who aren't spending $600 on a plane than week ;) I want for all small planes to be as good as the UMX planes from Eflite, and XK is one of the only ones that get THIS close to what I would consider HOBBY GRADE - which just means, it will fly [very] good. Check this page (an excerpt from a Turbo Timber) and see if you think the Rx board might work? www.jdoqocy.com/click-9240406-15735260?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.horizonhobby.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3D%2522EFLU8950Standardparts%2522%26relationType%3DStandardparts%26parentProduct%3DEFLU8950 ...then take note of it's SIZE and the included elevator and rudder servo..would that work? ...and would the PRICE be a disqualification for you? That's where I would start. Good luck!!!
I have a question regarding on how to assemble it with the servo connector, as you can see there are 3 holes there in the tail rudder and the aeleron, which hole should I choose to put the servo wire or steel to steer?
Nice review and video. A lot has comment on the controller board gyro and too sensitive issue. I love this plane and bought it too ;-) One sad point from these new series of XK planes are, the seems like not make have it multi-protocol 4-in-1 compatible, or at least the same implementation like previous model with add-on Rx via SBUS compatible Rx. So we can use a full hobby grade Tx like the RadioMaster Tx, which provide a much higher resolution on surface controls.
I totally agree, but this plane, as with others that don't fly as good as they could, it still have value and merit, but want you to be aware of this before having to buy it thinking it'll fly like the UMX Pitts or Waco - Which it should ;) bprc.me/Pitts bprc.me/Waco
P.S. Well I've finally got mine working, but it's still a bit strange. It would be MUCH better with our own servos and radio gear in there. There's plenty of room in the fuselage for different servos and an RX. What I did: * Press all the buttons on the top of the transmitter so that they beep twice: The D/R and the two on the right, or you'll have no elevator. * Check the elevator still responds when you throttle up: Previously my elevator was responding when the motor was off but stopped responding as soon as you throttle up * Mine needed A TON OF LEAD ON THE NOSE! I stuck some lead weights on the underneath of the cowl as far forward as I could. It took two wheel balancing weights (from a motorbike) to finally calm it down: I think they're 5 grams each, so 10 grams of lead on the nose.l
You weren't kidding about the turning radius. I came in low during a turn, and it overshot waaay wide.... right into a tree. My turning approach was modest like all the other planes I fly. Even with the sticks jammed full aileron to the left and pulling up. I even jammed the rudder full to the left and it still went wide. Granted the wind contributed to the wide turn
$140? At 24:26 that's what he said. I bought mine from Ali Express, and it was $68 for it and $73 total with tax and shipping. About half the cost, just wanted to put it out there
I wonder if you could remove its and take a volantex board and transmitter and easily install...that volantex sport cub board is fantastic from all the reviews i watched
FOR SURE! The Tx isn't bad, it's the flight controller, I think - why the heck would they make such an AMAZING plane, only to trash it with a terrible flight controller??!?! Such a bummer. I wanted it, sooooo badly, to fly as good as it looks...and it kinda still does! But, that extra controllablility I, and most pilots, demand is just totally missing on the RTF ;(
Have you considered getting A Jumper T16 radio so you can bind all of your RTF airplanes to a bigger radio? I haven't used a Jumper but I am tempted to get one
This is all I need to hear and see. I just got a BG offer of $79.99 for this. While it IS a beautiful bird (red please) it would be one more toy RC from bangood that looks great and flies...meh...Tell me what to do Brian! I own the XK A280 P51D. In the blinky mode...which takes like three button presses to activate (sometimes!) I can do loops and rolls and Immelman's. And it's a tank compared to my E-slight UMX Cracker-fragile Air Tractor...though also flies like one at slow speeds. Stll...for $80 it's sure purty.
Check that your servo wires are all plugged in the correct DIRECTION...they can be crammed in backwards by accident, and I BET that's what's going on. If still no joy - try an XBC Battery Tester (or similar) and use the SERVO TESTER to see if they deploy using that method.
So...the big question (s) is (are)......Where was the cat, and what was the noise you heard!? 49 in, Don't you remember when it was always 8 AA batteries? you sound surprised at 6. when they came out with the 2.4 ghz transmitters, I thought 4 cells was too little! Sure is a good looking plane, but that weird warp in the upper wing would concern me for sure. Too bad no steerable tailwheel. It looks like the graphics are painted on, not cheap-dink crappy stickers? 58:47 What's that little green and white plane on the stand behind you? "I had gloves on that were perfectly fine, they were just thin" as you complain about your hands, and Megan makes a perfectly valid point...Once again Brian, proving women smarter than men. Don't argue with her. lolol! 100:40, proving my point! lol 103:09 Yeah, A drop of glue would probably be best. I can see those doo-dads falling out in flight. I'm betting you could finagle those in after top wing's installed too.. I keep cringing when you put it upside down on your counter, waiting to see one of those nice lil scale antenna bust off. As usual, another fantastic video. Thanks you two!
That plane is the Concsendo UMX - a GREAT plane, and it's on a stand that my son and I worked together to make...he did most of the work, but I helped him with some ideas. He sells them once in a while when people are interested. bprc.me/Conscendo

I'm real sorry, not sure. If you click on the link in the video description, you can see documentation for many of the planes we cover. If I recall...the battery had to be crammed into a strange cavity on this plane...
Too modest Brian. Keep it up. But I think I'd rather go with the UMX Waco. If I... I don't want to buy another plane but you make me want a biplane. Curse and bless you for that
Convinced a young guy in his mid 20's to get the TX16S. He was new to sport so only had one plane. Came across a good deal on a jet, but couldn't get some stuff working..I think reverse thrust, so he sent it back to Amazon. Bought an NX8 for around $430, but it died in about 3mos. Needless to say, he went back to the Radiomaster and make the comment that the gimbals on the $210 TX16S are far superior of those on the NX8. You can't beat them for the money.
The xk a160 was a great plane ….you need to do another review since they fixed issues …I loved that plane and flew it in all types of wind….do another review and see for yourself …I had zero problems
@Brian: The manual on this is really bad, but I think I've got to the bottom of it! There are actually some mistakes in the translation from Chinese to English! I too was puzzled by the D/R, Senior and 6G/3D buttons, so I scanned in the original Chinese (the manual is in Chinglish and Chinese) and translated it. Here's what I think the buttons do: D/R - Dual rates. Although it doesn't look like it on the ground if you flick back and forth between the two D/R modes, I think this does give you a bit more control surface movement and makes it more responsive Senior - Supposedly switches off the gyro completely 6G/3D - Switches from full stabilization to "aerobatic but still a bit of stabilization" mode! It'll let you loop it and it will roll, but rolls VERY slowly, you have to really wait it out and use a lot of sky. When I first tried it, it just wouldn't turn: It's as if the elevator didn't have enough authority. I actually increased the elevator movement by connecting the rod to the upper hole on the horn rather than the middle one! With D/R on though I'm happy with the turn rate though, it's controllable. I wonder if I should increase the amount of movement on the ailerons in the same way? Connect the rods to a different hole, I mean? What do you think? I hope this helps!
I'm really disappointed with this plane I have the xk a280 P51-D MUSTANG and it flies awesome! With a few adjustments putting the linkages in the holes that give you the most throw helped big time with roll rates I hope xk comes out with more warbirds....idk what the deal with this plane is🤔
Это красивый, но "не правильный" биплан.... У "правильного" биплана верхнее крыло должно быть впереди нижнего... У этой игрушки все наоборот.... Она не правильной физике учит.
yeah, I was thinking that too. I think these RTF planes from XFly need to come out of the box flying WAY better. They are 100% capable of it, but the flight controller is NOT ready for market. It's like they wanted to make it "EASY to fly" but they just made it easy to go straight.
Sad part of XK products is they look great, but fly really bad!! In my humble opinion the people who buy these will have a negative experience and bye bye from the hobby. There are to many good beginner RTF's out there that I would suggest. 😎

I love it . but I know that buyplane flies like crap so after watching this video, is it plausible for me to take the receiver board out of the cub, which is actually in all of the K helicopters as well with the S-FHSS protocol and convert it to fly with it without actually having that plane to see what would your thoughts be on that any info you could recommend I would highly appreciate.
If I can make them fly good, I will LOVE them like their 2m counterparts, but if they fly like a toy grade plane, we do it to share it with people who aren't spending $600 on a plane than week ;)
I want for all small planes to be as good as the UMX planes from Eflite, and XK is one of the only ones that get THIS close to what I would consider HOBBY GRADE - which just means, it will fly [very] good.
Check this page (an excerpt from a Turbo Timber) and see if you think the Rx board might work?
www.jdoqocy.com/click-9240406-15735260?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.horizonhobby.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3D%2522EFLU8950Standardparts%2522%26relationType%3DStandardparts%26parentProduct%3DEFLU8950
...then take note of it's SIZE and the included elevator and rudder servo..would that work?
...and would the PRICE be a disqualification for you?
That's where I would start.
Good luck!!!
I have a question regarding on how to assemble it with the servo connector, as you can see there are 3 holes there in the tail rudder and the aeleron, which hole should I choose to put the servo wire or steel to steer?
I always love your video. Thanks. It is nice loops. Does it can do a rolling too??
XK is stepping up . Be nice for some new XK Helicopters with a brushless tail motor.
Nice review and video. A lot has comment on the controller board gyro and too sensitive issue.
I love this plane and bought it too ;-)
One sad point from these new series of XK planes are, the seems like not make have it multi-protocol 4-in-1 compatible, or at least the same implementation like previous model with add-on Rx via SBUS compatible Rx. So we can use a full hobby grade Tx like the RadioMaster Tx, which provide a much higher resolution on surface controls.
I totally agree, but this plane, as with others that don't fly as good as they could, it still have value and merit, but want you to be aware of this before having to buy it thinking it'll fly like the UMX Pitts or Waco - Which it should ;)

Staggered when wing Beachcraft
yes! I felt like such a moron when I couldn't drag that out of the memory coffers - LOL ;)
It’s a nice little flyer… 👍🏻👍🏻😎
P.S. Well I've finally got mine working, but it's still a bit strange. It would be MUCH better with our own servos and radio gear in there. There's plenty of room in the fuselage for different servos and an RX.
What I did:
* Press all the buttons on the top of the transmitter so that they beep twice: The D/R and the two on the right, or you'll have no elevator.
* Check the elevator still responds when you throttle up: Previously my elevator was responding when the motor was off but stopped responding as soon as you throttle up
* Mine needed A TON OF LEAD ON THE NOSE! I stuck some lead weights on the underneath of the cowl as far forward as I could. It took two wheel balancing weights (from a motorbike) to finally calm it down: I think they're 5 grams each, so 10 grams of lead on the nose.l
no response when throttle-up? so does mine with the rudder!
Maybe it's a very, very high expo setting in that transmitter?
You weren't kidding about the turning radius. I came in low during a turn, and it overshot waaay wide.... right into a tree.
My turning approach was modest like all the other planes I fly. Even with the sticks jammed full aileron to the left and pulling up. I even jammed the rudder full to the left and it still went wide.
Granted the wind contributed to the wide turn
Yeah, and if it weren't for such restrictive controls, this plane would be AMAZING!
$140? At 24:26 that's what he said. I bought mine from Ali Express, and it was $68 for it and $73 total with tax and shipping. About half the cost, just wanted to put it out there
😮Nice plane man
I wonder if you could remove its and take a volantex board and transmitter and easily install...that volantex sport cub board is fantastic from all the reviews i watched
Damn the plane, a 10, the radio a 1
FOR SURE! The Tx isn't bad, it's the flight controller, I think - why the heck would they make such an AMAZING plane, only to trash it with a terrible flight controller??!?! Such a bummer. I wanted it, sooooo badly, to fly as good as it looks...and it kinda still does! But, that extra controllablility I, and most pilots, demand is just totally missing on the RTF ;(
Suggestion. When winter snows come get a flat bottomed fan boat. I had a Dumas swamp buggy when I was w kid and it was a blast.
Putting mine together right now, using this so I don't have to decipher the instructions.
Have you considered getting A Jumper T16 radio so you can bind all of your RTF airplanes to a bigger radio? I haven't used a Jumper but I am tempted to get one
I bet if you put in a different receiver and and good transmitter this plane would fly amazing
I have a question about V 1200 gear issue. The gear won't go down when I flip the gear switch. I have brand new gear servos and I can't figure it out.
Check that your servo wires are all plugged in the correct DIRECTION...they can be crammed in backwards by accident, and I BET that's what's going on.
If still no joy - try an XBC Battery Tester (or similar) and use the SERVO TESTER to see if they deploy using that method.
@BrianPhillipsRC the wires are all plugged in correctly and I tested the servos with the tester and still no luck😔
Hope i have found to stop beeping on TX takeback off there is a small speaker inside cut this out light still comes on .
His kitchen could explode !
Hi Brian. Can you do a review on the FMS Kingfisher 1400mm?
wire a spectrum esc and receiver. would make the difference and a 3s esc
Don't argue with her. lolol!
100:40, proving my point! lol
103:09 Yeah, A drop of glue would probably be best.

Vielen vielen Dank für die sehr genaue Montage Anleitung.Super dadurch konnte ich mein Flugzeug aufbauen gebe dir einen Like 🎉und Abonniere dich 😊du bist noch besser RC Salylers.Meine Tochter findet deine Aussprache so lustig.Perfektes Englisch 🎉🎉🎉
Is there a way to pull out that receiver and replace it with a mini spektrum?
may i see the flight video of the XK Cub pls?
We have a playlist for that, but it was one of my least favorite. It's WAY too heavy ;( sorry to report.
thanks better to see it in action maybe we can do some mods to lighten her up@@BrianPhillipsRC
Jus ordered 2. One for my son and one for me
So, where should the CG be set?
I'm real sorry, not sure. If you click on the link in the video description, you can see documentation for many of the planes we cover. If I recall...the battery had to be crammed into a strange cavity on this plane...
Yes, I watched. Thanks any.
Is this boat as easy to play as the Volantex BF 109?
This plane flies easy, but you need a lot of room due to the way the flight controller works.
You should fly the X-Fly 50mm A-10.
Wath hapen if you put this plane in your radio NX10?
You can't, wrong Transmission protocol.
Too modest Brian. Keep it up. But I think I'd rather go with the UMX Waco. If I... I don't want to buy another plane but you make me want a biplane. Curse and bless you for that
try reading the Destuctions ??
Hey Brian what do you think of radiomaster transmitters?
@@-BUFFALOMan thanks, it looks like a good radio for me as I don't want to pay 3 times as much for a spektrum radio with less features.
They fixed the issues? How do you know you are buying a fixed version?
@ you are talking bout the xk a160?
@@snauzze7007 yeh
Such a shame that nobody makes a high quality staggerwing
When all else fails RTFM ( read the fabulous manual )
They conceal critical control information in the book.😂
Am I wrong or belly battery compartments. They just shouldn't.... Not a fan
Here's what I think the buttons do:
D/R - Dual rates. Although it doesn't look like it on the ground if you flick back and forth between the two D/R modes, I think this does give you a bit more control surface movement and makes it more responsive
Senior - Supposedly switches off the gyro completely
6G/3D - Switches from full stabilization to "aerobatic but still a bit of stabilization" mode!
I hope this helps!
hi this plane can connet to dsmx satellite receiver.thanks
I'm really disappointed with this plane I have the xk a280 P51-D MUSTANG and it flies awesome! With a few adjustments putting the linkages in the holes that give you the most throw helped big time with roll rates I hope xk comes out with more warbirds....idk what the deal with this plane is🤔
Brain your funny..lol All Chinese guys aren't small or have small hands..lol
LOL ;)
Brain please get a wot 4 foem-e pleaseeeeeeeeee
More of a scale flying plane
Wonder how much lighter with a "good" system in it
Brain read the manual
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ;) XK manuals are admittedly pretty useless...some goodies, but not like FMS / Horiozon / Tower
Lets see, remove the landing gear fairings and scale struts, pilots, and dummy engine. Under 250 😊
I wouldn't worry about it.
Это красивый, но "не правильный" биплан.... У "правильного" биплана верхнее крыло должно быть впереди нижнего... У этой игрушки все наоборот.... Она не правильной физике учит.
It's a scale model of Beechcraft D17 which has amazing flight characteristics, it's a stagerwing
Hmmm, Throw The Transmitter & Receiver Away Then Put Spectrum In... Or Just Buy An Eflite Plane...😜🤣😁😎
He has hundreds of eflite planes
@@leozengy I Got Over 2-Hundred Too... Butt He Gets His Free... 😜🤣😁😎
Garbage becouse of the controler. If you Have a Radeomaster to bind it to like someone said it should turn it into a good flying plane.
yeah, I was thinking that too. I think these RTF planes from XFly need to come out of the box flying WAY better. They are 100% capable of it, but the flight controller is NOT ready for market. It's like they wanted to make it "EASY to fly" but they just made it easy to go straight.
sorry Brian, only video I didn't watch till the end, terrible flight controller
Sad part of XK products is they look great, but fly really bad!! In my humble opinion the people who buy these will have a negative experience and bye bye from the hobby. There are to many good beginner RTF's out there that I would suggest. 😎
