I cannot say it enough. I learn SO much from your videos Kevin! As you already know, I will be starting a rebuild on “our” “51” 8N and was going to ask the same question Keith did about drilling the bosses to simplify using adjustable lifters. Thank you so much for answering that for both of us. And that’s another thing about your videos and yourself. You ALWAYS reply to all of your fans in a really timely fashion. You’re a good man and a super fantastic mechanic (MASTER) thanks man, looking forward to your next…and next lol

I got 2 questions for you.
#1 Someone who supposedly knows these motors is assuring me that the front mount distributor motors are supposed to have a cam thrust washer that goes behind the front cover. Part 6276. Mine is all original and did not have it though.
#2 My oil pump gear seems to be loose where its riveted to the shaft. Whats the best way to fix that?

It is something they came up with on the later engines but it is not required. They originally set camshaft end play with selective thickness gaskets and later switched to the spring shim. 9N6608A is the number for a new gear assembly if you have the narrow pump gear. If you have the wide one 8N6608 is the one you need. If you want the fix yours you can try working the rivets a bit or drill them out and replace with bolts. But just make sure it hasn't worn the bore which would affect concentricity.

@@ClaremontClassicGarage Thanks. Would it be a good idea to add the thrust spring shim to mine? I think the oil pump is tight besides the pulley being loose.

@@jjay718 You can put the thrust spring in, just make sure it doesn't bind the cam.

Hello Kevin really enjoyed that my Dad would have loved your idea welding up the lifters! He was from the school of don’t spend money but not that I am trying to scare you he had a valve punch a hole in a lifter right after a rebuild and if I remember correctly we fixed it without taking the hood of we just blocked it up and we had spares so he had it up and running in no time! That’s probably 40 years ago. Question for Kevin my lifters are adjustable but they have a little dip where the valve stem has seated into the lifters if I am putting in new valves should that dip be machined flat again or is it ok just to leave it alone? And how do you feel about drilling a hole in the boss and using a punch to hold the lifters from moving so you can adjust them or do you think it’s better to buy the little tools Dennis Carpenter sells ( they just look like they wouldn’t hold up to me) carrying on Canada 🇨🇦

The dips need to be machined/ground back flat because a feeler gauge can't get down in there to allow accurate adjustment. . Or cut down a feeler gauge so its only 1/8inch wide and it will conform to the dip. Drilling the lifter boss to hold them with a pin is completely harmless, just make sure to dress down any burrs left in the actual lifter bore.
