A Warning About Marine Heads : Seagrass Danger

  • Hello Friends,
This is just a short video where I talk about discovering seagrass holding open my seawater intake valve on my head.
On our last trip we kept having the problem with the head filling up with seawater even though we had switched the switch on the toilet to the "safe" side. It turned out to be full of seagrass and this could have resulted in the boat sinking if we were not onboard and the bilge pump failed for any reason.
My old head was a "Johnson Pump" and was new on the boat when I bought it but it never worked great and broke when I took it apart to inspect the valve. I replaced it with a beautiful new "Jabsco Twist 'n' Lock Manual Head, Marine Toilet"
I love Jabsco (even though I pronounce it Jobsco) products, I have their macerator pump onboard Triteia and all of my Y valves are also Jabsco.
I hope this helps someone if you ever encounter your bowl overflowing with seawater, this might be a good place to look...
If its overflowing with something other than seawater.... please don't call me for help.
Thanks for watching and if you enjoy the content please leave a comment and like below or you can donate as little as a dollar a video if you are so inclined on our patreon page.

add a jabsco pump screen in line to the sea water will stop any grass from getting stuck in valve

I think that head will have the same valve! you need a anti syphon valve! But best to Always shut off the thru hull.

I am replacing a similar toilet with a diy composting head just to have no trough holes. Hope it works as well as all internet sources are saying.

Composting heads seem like a cool option, as long as you can find peat moss. The reasons I decided not to use a composting toilet are 1: you have to empty the liquid/urine container by hand ,,, also not sure how you do this legally in a nice marina / anchorage without getting in trouble.... 2: the vent fan has to be on 24hours a day to keep bugs out of your bowl which means a constant, however small, draw on the batteries and 3: not sure I could find peat moss on far flung islands and anchorages. If a boat will mostly be doing coastal cruising It seems like a perfect solution if it does get rid of the head smell as everyone says it will !!!

@@SailorJames One guy told me: 1. you can carry the urine in a old plastic antifreeze jug and empty into the marina toilet; 2. you can install a Nico solar vent in the deck and only turn on an electric muffin fan during night-time; 3. when cruising overseas, you can replace peat moss w/coconut husks, kitty litter or even 'beach' sand, if you can find it!!! How much to 'completely' replace your head/holding tank issues? I just found a 1974 A30 with that same issue...

Don't use seawater. It smells anyway.
