  • White-throated sparrows are one of our earliest arriving breeders here in Maine. I caught this guy singing up a storm shortly after dawn. Their song is truly the sound of the north woods to me.
If you look closely in the closeup shots you can actually see the birds pupil dilating.

My absolute favorite bird, all because of that song. Imagine camping deep in a national park. And this wakes you up at 4AM. And you just don't mind. When they team up into a duet, with one bird sending a call in a rising intonation, then the other replying in a distinctly dropping intonation, that's just magical.

I have camped in Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. And the White Throated Sparrows perform well out there, their music carrying over the lakes.
Fortunately, every spring and autumn, I get to hear these in the Cincinnati area. I used to think it was a song of the Carolina Chickadee up until recently. Both little birds are some of my favorites.

I love how so many of us have suddenly heard this piercingly sweet song and wondered what it was, and were delighted to finally figure it out. I first heard it way far off out my window about 3 years ago, and they've gradually come closer and closer -- and now they're feeding in my backyard! I don't remember ever hearing it, so I wonder if it is expanding its habitat and catching the attention of many more bird nerds everywhere!

White-throated Sparrows moved into my area of Pennsylvania a few years ago, and stayed for the winter, but this year is only the second year that they’re nesting around my home. Their song is so lovely and relaxing, and their repeated Kermit the Frog’s plaintive “It’s Not Easy Being Green” is funny, although I’m sure Kermit listened to White-throated Sparrow’s song and (ahem) “stole” it from them!

0:19 This is the type of bird that has been singing in my area the entire time. I thought it was a chickadee. So glad you posted this!
