Don, please consider using a 4x8 scaffolding setup on casters. Gives you walking around space when working up high and you can pull it around while standing on it. The ladder will wear you out.
Please Please ! Put some Diagonal bracing on all 4 walls. From the top plates corners running close to 45 degrees to the sill plate, This will keep the wall plumb, other wise you load the roof, the building will fall over sideways and your dead.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 You're welcome Don, great to see your progress. A viewer had a suggestion that is right on, you need some diagonal bracing in the walls, maybe cut in some 1x6" lumber. I think that I would sheet the outside with some T111 siding that I would screw and glue.
You are truly an inspiration Don. You're doing great out there! Wow, shout out to Marisa for sending the fencing! That was super kind and thoughtful of her.
Every time I watch one of your 15-20 minute videos I'm so exhausted by it I have to take a weeks vacation to recuperate. You're the hardest working man in showbiz Don, you work harder AND smarter
Glad to see you completed the work without any health mishaps. Once again you have shown that a person can complete the hardest task when they put their mind to it. Great work Don.
Great ingenuity and an example of God's Grace to apply skills and abilities you didn't know you had. Remember months ago when we discussed screwing horizontal sheets of OSB into the exterior framing before you put finished siding on? Now is the time. I usually do that before loading the frames with ANY thing. That will protect you and protect your investment. It was really fun to see a totally different approach than anyone else has done to accomplish the task. Most buy a second ladder and park it across from the first and walk the trusses up or when available, scaffolding. You must have had a blast dreaming up 6:04 this " MacGyver ism" ! Away we go! Onward and Upward!
My belate HAPPY BIRTDAY, youngster Don! Each single video you share with us fills me with deep admiration for your incredible engineer brain and physic talents. And your always sooo friendly and well minded explanations of what you are doing in that precise moment are simply the best and impress me in this rough world of nowadays. I thank you so much, Don!
That was amazing work you did on these trusses. You are so smart Don, and Happy Birthday to you as well!!! I hope you had the best celebration with your friends. I seriously think you developed some remarkable ways to install these trusses. I know you are hustling to get so much done before the rains pour. Thanks for sharing all your progress and all your processes. You 're an inspiration Don! Sending you blessings and prayers for continuing success, you deserve it! 🥰🥰And thank you to your angel follower Marisa, what a wonderful gift!!!!
Buy several rachet straps on sale from Home Depot, Lowes or harbor freight. Secure one end at the top plate & streach diagonal down to the bottom plate & secure. Then secure at every vertical stud with staples, & do that from both ends to make an X on all four walls. The straps will not affect any sheathing installed later, but will minimize any racking due to wind before you put sheathing. One good wind gust can (will) create problems. (Been there, done that.) If you have enough diagonal braces for each wall, you'll be safe, but you saw how effective even a mild gust did with rafters. I am 81, building "tiny house" in Missouri Ozarks (1,200 SF) With/for daughter. Over 85% done in 4-1/2 years. She should be able to move in by winter. I love your project progress. It's wonderful to not have the pressure of necessity & accomplish something every day & realize what you can't get done today, you can do tomorrow. Keep up the good work while you're still in the "prime of your life". 🤔🤗
I'm exhausted. All that wooden structure built by ONE man! It's impressive and it looks great to me! (I built a doghouse once, that was the end of my construction work for life...) It's always enjoyable to see you building your 'desert dream' since episode one. BTW, that's the first time I've ever heard a roadrunner chirping! Happy Birthday!!
Well, I may be older but I ain’t wiser. You out-engineered me by miles on those trusses. My solution would have been two guys and a helper on two ladders.
Don, After you get your roof sheathing installed, you might consider using GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD HT® High temperature roofing underlayment. Each roll is 3 feet x 75 foot. You can use it under any kind of roofing material. It has a sticky adhesive backing covered with a release paper film. You roll out a few feet along the eve, pull a foot or two of the backing off, line it up so there is a couple of inches hanging over the rake and drip edges of the sheathing and nail the top corner down. With it wrapped over the rake and drip edges, covered by those metal edges, you will NEVER have a leak. Roll out 10 or 15 feet at a time and then pull the release paper out from under the underlayment as you go. You start at the eve and each successive horizontal application has an overlap of 3 or 4 inches until you get to the peak.. No matter what type of roof you plan on installing over it, this stuff will prevent any kind of roof leaks in the future. It seals every single nail or screw you put through it. Research it. Watch a few install videos to see if this is something that might work for you. Although a little pricey ( about $235 a roll ), you'll never regret having it up there once your job is done. We did our house and shop with it.
Wow, it looks like a house-- You did that! Hey, Mareesa was so generous and thoughtful sending you that fencing: my nickname is close to hers, pretty unusual, but her gift casts into the shade the little Amazon gift card I was able to send you way back. I'd send you the moon if I could! Love the shot of the neat roadrunner trying out your roof. Thanks for the update, it was exciting footage! Love and Happy Birthday to the youngest 69-year-old ever. Cheers from So California.
Don, you absolutely amaze me 🤩. You’re one of a few who has creativity & ingenuity to get a solution to an obstacle 🌟🌟 you remind me of my oldest son 😉 Don’t know if I’m early or late but…. HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎂🎉🎈. 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Nice one Don...Now, you MUST brace the walls and roof, as per the engineering, and install the tiedowns before loading the roof. Great work...looking forward to the next video
First of all, a very happy birthday to you Don .Secondly .You never fall to amaze me with your ability to have a go at just about anything .Great idea with the metal spacers from amazon, they will definitely add to the stability of the trusses .You are a very modest genius .
Don't overdo it in the heat. My 82 yr young brother in Tucson gets an early start on his repairs and quits for the day when it is too hot. You keep finding a way to get the job done.
That would been something my dad would have done working on his own, he'd build a pulley system or some other genius gadget to help him. Keep up the awesome tips and tricks for DIY's
I have enjoyed watching you build your house. I have a concern that you don't have any diagonal bracing on your walls. Before you try to dry in the structure, you need to put OSB or plywood on each side of the four exterior corners and attach it or run some temporary diagonal bracing from from the top of the corner down to your wood foundation and attach it to the top plate, the wall studs, and your wood foundation. I'm not a carpenter or a structural engineer but you have a lot of weight sitting on the top of your walls and a high wind or other lateral load acting on your trusses could cause your walls to shift and collapse like dominoes. That is just my opinion so please do some research and find the right solution for your situation.
Happy Birthday Don may you have many more im back in Australia and i had my 67th Birthday while i was away your doing great there couldent some one help you get the trusses up ?would have helped you but your stubborn really hey good job on it all i dont think i could build that all even my brothers and Dad were builders mainly brick layers That spacer for the 24 on center was great never knew there was a thing like that alot of people there just use spare timber Your a amazing man Don in that heat its like when i worked in the outback you get used to being out in that weather
Lets see, I'm 73 and you're 69. There is no way I would have tackled a project of this scope 10 yrs ago, never mind at 69. You get a huge 👍from me for your tenacity. I would have called 1-800-Tuff Shed from the Git-Go without a moments hesitation no matter the cost. By the way, I remodeled a 2 bedroom house from the studs up at age 62 and it about finished me off. I can't imagine from the ground up.
Thanks Pam! I simply wanted to have the adventure of a solo build. If I was Brian I would have been able to reach up and grab the trusses and flip them easy LOL.

Noted and done.
A belated Happy Birthday, Don! Amazing work so far.
Way to go Don, you morphed into a real McGyver
Thanks so very much Peter!

Yeah no question! She is so thoughtful its incredibly kind.
I loved Roadie's input too! How fortunate to catch that on video!
Yep indeed Sheridan. He posed nicely too.
Glad u get to celebrate with some local friends! 😃
Every time I watch one of your 15-20 minute videos I'm so exhausted by it I have to take a weeks vacation to recuperate. You're the hardest working man in showbiz Don, you work harder AND smarter
I just had to LOL with that statement. Hilarious. Thanks so very much for all of the encouragement!
Glad to see you completed the work without any health mishaps. Once again you have shown that a person can complete the hardest task when they put their mind to it. Great work Don.
Many thanks for faithfully watching the progress on the home. Cheers.
Wow,you must be almost bursting with
exilleration of your accomplishments up to now.
Super blessed and thrilled for sure.
I agree with the bracing comment - either using diagonals or some sheathing in places where it won't block the doors or windows.
Hello! Don! Great to see the trusses are up. You did this well. Looking forward to what comes next. I have faith in you!
Necessity is the mother of invention! Glad you are makeing great progress!

I had no end to fun using my imagination to do this one to be honest.
Coming along nicely Don, at least one of us is making progress on their property.
Old lady here, but I’ve done enough renovation to think YOU’RE AMAZING figuring out how to do all this ALONE!
Thanks for the lovely comments Nancy and I so appreciate you watching.
Well all i can say is, you're doing the work of two men. Stay safe and as always be careful. PLEASE
Thanks Lee. Have amped up the safety/precautions etc.

Let's hear it for Marissa 👏
Seriously.
Work smarter, not harder. You are a great example of that.

Really interesting, I learned so much, but at the age of eighty, not looking for any New endeavors!
You take it easy Don, don’t over do it!

Super fun to do the build I find and also I save several thousand dollars by building it myself.
Well Dun! I expected nothing less!
Very impressive. I don’t think I could have imagined your setup. Did you have any help from the Greeks or Romans? That was my thought.
You should look into getting a baker scaffold
Happy birthday!
Don, you’re doing a great job but we would’ve helped if you needed us. That seems like a big job to try alone. ❤
Thanks Pam! I simply wanted to have the adventure of a solo build. If I was Brian I would have been able to reach up and grab the trusses and flip them easy LOL.
ingenious!! Sparky way to go keep safe!!!
thumbs up
Thanks Tom.
😊
I do not know what you're doing easy one man can just lift those and put them on the wall the craziest thing I've ever seen
Happy Birthday Don!!!!
Thanks for the kind birthday wishes.
Happy belated bday🎉
Love you ! Please take care !
Thanks so much! Yep have amped up the safety mindset.
❤❤❤
I'm new I saw the solar gen video you made and now I'm subbed. Good progress on your build. You can do it.
Hi Herbert. Love having you here and thanks so much for the sub!
Good Stuff.
