⬇TRANSLATION DOWN BELOW⬇ [Disclaimer: Neither Korean nor English are my native language, so there might be mistakes and I apologize in advance! Just trying to spread happiness! Enjoy~ 😊🌹] 0:18 Drawandrew: So, what made you appear on this show? 0:19 Roy Kim: During this comeback there might be also many music broadcast shows and performances of me singing, but (my fans) seem to be curious what kind of person I am and what thoughts I have. So, I wondered where would be a good place to talk about such stuff… 0:29 Draw: [(immediately)] Right, there is no place like this one! (laughs) 0:31 Roy: [(cold)] Yes, there is no place like Drawandrew’s . 0:32 Draw: Earlier I said jokingly there is exactly one thing that I want to ask when Roy Kim comes. Having such a (handsome) face, while also having succeeded as a singer, being good at studying, having a good educational background and being famous and popular, how does that feel? (laughs) 0:45 Roy: Well… it’s actually a double-edged sword. The people who make us think ‘this person seems like he’ll be good at everything’ will have some flaw. 0:56 Draw: Like having an ingrown toenail? (laughs) 0:57 Roy: Or like having some organ problems… (laughs) 0:59 Draw: Do you have any other topic related to self-improvement that you are interested in? Since you majored in business administration, you must have heard a lot related to business? 1:05 Roy: No, I took business administration as my major when I entered university, but the department of business administration was the only one at my university with relative evaluation. Since the relative evaluation was so harsh, (the students) didn’t help each other. That’s when I realized that this culture of relative evaluation isn’t for me. So I transferred to the department of sociology in my second year. I think it helped me to broaden my view of the world and I think it was after graduating in sociology, that I started thinking more about what kind of texts and thoughts more people would be able to relate to. So now when I write lyrics, the 4 minutes’ worth of text (in case of a long song) suddenly became very precious from a certain moment onwards. (I realized) it’s not just careless writing, because you don’t know which listener will relate to which line. 1:44 Draw: Or who could be hurt by the lyrics. 1:46 Roy: Right. So, I started writing lyrics while thinking that I should write them (carefully) line by line, so that more people can be comforted by them or empathize with them. 1:53 Draw: So you went on , when you just had entered university, right? 1:58 Roy: No, before I entered university, just after I had received the admission letter. 2:00 Draw: Ah, before entering the university. 2:02 Roy: Before entering university, exactly one gap year was possible. I didn’t even want to take a break from studying. To be honest, I went there just for fun. Back then there were also programs like and besides , but the only audition that overlapped with my summer vacation was the one for . Seniors and older friends always told me the break between receiving the university admission certificate from your high school and entering university is… 2:24 Draw: …your last chance? (laughs) 2:25 Roy: ‘It’s your last chance! You really have to play hard in that time period and do everything you want to.’ I heard that often. So since the timing was just right, I thought ‘let’s at least go to the preliminaries once’. I auditioned with such a mindset and then suddenly ended up becoming Roy Kim. I sang in front of Lee Ha-neul, Lee Seung-chul and Baek Ji-young and only after I passed (this first round) it suddenly hit me. Is it right for me to continue on this path or should I just stick to the path that I was following up until now. That time became like a crossroad of life at which I had to make a decision. 2:53 Draw: But that really changed your future completely! 2:55 Roy: Yes, I sometimes wonder, what if I didn’t take a leave from university and returned to university back then? 3:00 Draw: So is it okay to ask about that now? 3:01 Roy: Yes. 3:02 Draw: What would have happened, if you didn’t audition for ? 3:06 Roy: If everything went well, I’d probably be a banker in New York. 3:09 Draw: In my opinion if you didn’t appear on , you would have made your debut through after a few years. (both laugh) That’s the feeling I get, you know what I mean, right? Isn’t the image forming in your mind already? The business manager, who lives in New York… [Kim Sang-woo, 30 years old, working at a stock firm] 3:21 Roy: That would have been better. 3:22 Draw: Would that have been better? 3:23 Roy: That would have been better. 3:24 Draw: And in the end you would have debuted as a singer. 3:26 Roy: Ah, so in the end this was my destiny? The career of a singer seems to be a hard road. Your friends will say ‘at least you earn money by doing what you like’ and from the outside it might look glamorous like that. But actually, when your dream, whatever it is, becomes your reality, it’ll be very different from what you have imagined. Now that I have become a singer, I realized how hard it is. Also mentally, it isn’t easy. It seems like a profession in which one personally has to carry a heavy burden. I also ask myself, if I am (having a hard time) to this degree, how are BTS and Black Pink (enduring and) living on? I have such thoughts from time to time. So, I believe that I have to continuously narrow the gap between the me living a private life and the me appearing on broadcasts, in order for me to be able to live in a healthy way as a singer. These days, the gap seems to close more and more. 4:11 Draw: All the worries when your popularity rises or drops… 4:14 Roy: Right, there are a lot of worries! Both are dangerous, honestly. 4:16 Draw: Finding the right balance seems to take a lot of effort. 4:18 Roy: It is extremely important. So, it’s important to always maintain an emotional state that isn’t too good but also not too bad and remains just right in the middle. 4:26 Draw: Do you have a method for that? 4:27 Roy: It seems like it took 10 years for me (to find it). 4:30 Draw: Right, you’re doing this job for 10 years now! 4:31 Roy: 11 years now. I am still in the process of becoming aware, but in the end, I am just doing my very best by putting all my effort into everything and whether my music does well on the charts or the reaction is good doesn’t lie within my powers. Such things are given to me. I gave 100% my best and if the world goes around like that right now, then I will adjust to that and go with the flow. I try to keep the same attitude towards the life I’m living and when things don’t go well for me, instead of focusing on the worrisome thoughts that it has to get better again and what I should do, I think: ‘My starting point is right here and when I look at it from this viewpoint, it can only go up from here. Even compared to the people doing well right now, I could become even happier. Whatever I do, I can only rise up from here.’ Now that I internalized such thoughts, my mind’s more at ease. Let’s just enjoy ourselves! ⬇continued in the replies down below⬇
5:12 Draw: So what things is the present Roy Kim balancing right now? 5:15 Roy: It’s only now that I fully enjoy my singing career for the first time in the 11 years since my debut. There is a prayer I say every day, you know. Please don’t let extreme happiness, extreme joy nor extreme sadness find me. Although there are also days that don’t go as I want them to and days that are better than expected, what I am grateful for in the end is that this one body of mine is unhurt and that I can lie in this bed in good health; that is what I am thanking heaven for. Also, nobody of my family, friends or acquaintances got hurt today, so this day is precious to me and I am grateful that I am able to fall asleep and wake up tomorrow in this kind of state. I say these three prayers every day before I go to sleep. The day before yesterday… you know the singer Park Jaejung, right? 5:52 Draw: Yes, sure I know him. 5:52 Roy: He sent me a message. He often contacts me when he’s drunk, you know. He said ‘Hyung, I love you more than you love yourself.’ I just said ‘yeah’ and since he was worried it would annoy me, if we kept talking, he said ‘alright, go to sleep soon’. After that I showered, went to bed and then carefully thought about what Jaejung had said to me. When the thought ‘Ah, was I loving myself not as much?’ came to mind, I thought I should pray for Jaejung because I was thankful that he let me know that he’d love me more. So, I went to sleep after praying for him that day. 6:21 Draw: My grandmother prays every day. Every day, two hours on end. When I entered the room after knocking, I found my grandmother praying while dozing off. (laughs) 6:29 Roy: (laughs) It’s the same for me. 6:30 Draw: But I asked her, you’ve been praying two hours every day for several years now, why are you praying that much? Her answer that stuck with me was this: ‘Our life in heaven is not something separate; when your heart is at ease that is living in paradise.’ 6:40 Roy: She is right! 6:41 Draw: I think maybe (praying) plays the role of a gratitude journal. 6:44 Roy: Yes, it’s like a diary. 6:45 Draw: Some write it down, some say it out loud and some think it,… 6:47 Roy: While it seems quite easy to obtain a state of mind in which you wish others well, it is actually quite hard. When you take a look at people suffering these days, as most of them seem to have times when they express jealousy, they might even be degrading others. 6:58 Draw: Do you have felt this way before, as well? [(joking)] (laughs) 7:00 Roy: I know it too well. I prevent things that keep trying to escape from my subconscious mind. 7:04 Draw: Right, how many worries an umchina* has! (*lit.: son of my mom’s friend, perfect son who’s good at everything) 7:06 Roy: I’m not an umchina! 7:08 Draw: But you are! 7:09 Roy: No, I’m not! 7:10 Draw: That’s a deception. 7:12 Roy: The expression itself established itself taking jealousy as base. As I see how it’s a word made from envy and inferiority complexes, I don’t like to use a word that has such a very negative root to describe myself. There is no perfect person. (I know) because I also tried to be perfect… 7:26 Draw: That doesn’t work. 7:27 Roy: So, I should just live being myself. 7:28 Draw: Ah, that’s why, now putting that (burden of trying to be perfect) down, you are more at ease. A psychologist once said ‘The reason why people get jealous is because they didn’t see the effort the person made. Jealousy builds from the thought that this person doesn’t deserve a certain thing. So when you look at the process of how a person got to this point, your jealousy disappears.’ 7:46 Roy: Right, because it is hard. 7:48 Draw: Even while having such good looks, being popular and succeeding, you can still feel jealous - today’s conclusion. 7:52 Roy: You seem to be very jealous. You should start praying today. (laughs) 7:56 Draw: [(joking)] I won't ask you about that. (laughs) 7:59 Roy: [(admitting quickly)] I don’t have anything to be jealous of. 8:00 Draw: Now that I’ve met you today, you seem very down to earth. 8:03 Roy: Oh, really? That’s a relief. I thought I was an umchina and perfect. 8:06 Draw: Yeah, and I have an extreme inferiority complex. (Roy laughs) 8:09 Draw: Tell me something. You also don’t seem to be good with words. 8:11 Draw [(having so much fun)] 8:12 Roy: [(agreeing)] Yes, I can’t talk today. What did I even say? ㅜㅜ Let’s shoot this again after a week. [(pleaing)] 8:16 Draw: If you say something cool now, we will cut it in. 8:17 Roy: Oh, you would? Something cool… 8:19 Draw [(staring)] Roy [(thinking carefully)] 8:24 Draw: If you can’t think of anything, you have nothing (to say). 8:26 Roy: I am someone who has nothing cool to say. (both laugh) 8:29 Draw: [(empathetic)] You are really too honest… 8:30 Draw: We made so many jokes today, that I ask myself whether I ever had a guest with whom I joked around this much… (both laugh) 8:34 Draw: You know how to react in a fun way while joking*. (*lit.: have a good sense of hitting) 8:35 Roy: People keep telling me this these days. Why do people like to tease me? [(doesn’t understand)] 8:39 Draw: So, what about introducing your song? 8:40 Roy: Ah, because the new song comes out. Everyone, my new song is out. My song came out and like I mentioned before, since I live by the words ‘Let’s enjoy ourselves’ these days, I came back with a lighthearted and exciting song which suits summer. So, please listen to it a lot! It’s good. It’s something I wanted to tell my fans, as well. 9:00 Draw: I’ll definitely listen to it. That’s it for today! 9:03 [] 9:03 Roy: Does this side of your face usually look better? 9:04 Draw: I don’t care actually. 9:05 Roy: Then, can I maybe sit over there? 9:06 Roy [(looking over)] 9:06 Draw: [(startled)] There was never a guest who sat on this side. 9:08 Roy: Then let’s just try this as something new. 9:11 Draw: Should… should we switch? 9:11 Roy: Yes! 9:13 Draw: I’ll switch because it’s Roy Kim! Good-looking people are indeed more argumentative! 9:17 Roy: [(comfortable)] I am really relieved right now.

Seniors and older friends always told me the break between receiving the university admission certificate from your high school and entering university is…
2:24 Draw: …your last chance? (laughs)
2:25 Roy: ‘It’s your last chance!
(both laugh)
That’s the feeling I get, you know what I mean, right? Isn’t the image forming in your mind already? The business manager, who lives in New York… [Kim Sang-woo, 30 years old, working at a stock firm]
3:21 Roy: That would have been better.
4:11 Draw: All the worries when your popularity rises or drops…
4:14 Roy: Right, there are a lot of worries!
(laughs)
6:29 Roy: (laughs) It’s the same for me.
6:30 Draw: But I asked her, you’ve been praying two hours every day for several years now, why are you praying that much? Her answer that stuck with me was this: ‘Our life in heaven is not something separate; when your heart is at ease that is living in paradise.’
6:40 Roy: She is right!
6:41 Draw: I think maybe (praying) plays the role of a gratitude journal.
6:44 Roy: Yes, it’s like a diary.
6:45 Draw: Some write it down, some say it out loud and some think it,…
6:47 Roy: While it seems quite easy to obtain a state of mind in which you wish others well, it is actually quite hard. When you take a look at people suffering these days, as most of them seem to have times when they express jealousy, they might even be degrading others.
6:58 Draw: Do you have felt this way before, as well? [(joking)] (laughs)
7:00 Roy: I know it too well. I prevent things that keep trying to escape from my subconscious mind.
7:04 Draw: Right, how many worries an umchina* has! (*lit.: son of my mom’s friend, perfect son who’s good at everything)
7:06 Roy: I’m not an umchina!
(I know) because I also tried to be perfect…
7:26 Draw: That doesn’t work.
So when you look at the process of how a person got to this point, your jealousy disappears.’
7:46 Roy: Right, because it is hard.
7:48 Draw: Even while having such good looks, being popular and succeeding, you can still feel jealous - today’s conclusion.
7:52 Roy: You seem to be very jealous. You should start praying today. (laughs)
7:56 Draw: [(joking)] I won't ask you about that. (laughs)
7:59 Roy: [(admitting quickly)] I don’t have anything to be jealous of.
8:00 Draw: Now that I’ve met you today, you seem very down to earth.
8:03 Roy: Oh, really? That’s a relief. I thought I was an umchina and perfect.
8:06 Draw: Yeah, and I have an extreme inferiority complex. (Roy laughs)
8:09 Draw: Tell me something. You also don’t seem to be good with words.
8:11 Draw [(having so much fun)]
8:12 Roy: [(agreeing)] Yes, I can’t talk today. What did I even say? ㅜㅜ Let’s shoot this again after a week. [(pleaing)]
8:16 Draw: If you say something cool now, we will cut it in.
8:17 Roy: Oh, you would? Something cool…
8:19 Draw [(staring)] Roy [(thinking carefully)]
8:24 Draw: If you can’t think of anything, you have nothing (to say).
8:26 Roy: I am someone who has nothing cool to say. (both laugh)
8:29 Draw: [(empathetic)] You are really too honest…
8:30 Draw: We made so many jokes today, that I ask myself whether I ever had a guest with whom I joked around this much… (both laugh)
8:34 Draw: You know how to react in a fun way while joking*. (*lit.: have a good sense of hitting)
8:35 Roy: People keep telling me this these days. Why do people like to tease me? [(doesn’t understand)]
8:39 Draw: So, what about introducing your song?
8:40 Roy: Ah, because the new song comes out. Everyone, my new song is out. My song came out and like I mentioned before, since I live by the words ‘Let’s enjoy ourselves’ these days, I came back with a lighthearted and exciting song which suits summer. So, please listen to it a lot! It’s good. It’s something I wanted to tell my fans, as well.
9:00 Draw: I’ll definitely listen to it. That’s it for today!
9:03 []
9:03 Roy: Does this side of your face usually look better?
9:04 Draw: I don’t care actually.
9:05 Roy: Then, can I maybe sit over there?
9:06 Roy [(looking over)]
9:06 Draw: [(startled)] There was never a guest who sat on this side.
Thank You Very Much for Translating Really, Really Appreciated it. It’s a pretty long transcript.
