  • A new series in which the GCLR goes on a Day Excursion ( ADEX) to visit and support the many Heritage Railways around the U.K.
Today we visit Wales and up the valley visit the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway, located at the Blaenavon World Heritage Site, and home to 'The Big Pit'
A remarkable railway, with some interesting operating requirements, and a 1 in 34 embankment to climb too! One item of rolling stock they use is a GWR or BR(W) Officers Observation Saloon, I have always been fascinated with these, and always wanted a ride in one. and indeed the GCLR has its own General Managers Saloon. (link to that video at the end) They are always very plush, yet practical, simple, and perfectly suited to the job of inspecting the line. The one of the Pontypool & Blaenavon railway was restored by the West Somerset Railway, (which we hope to visit later in the year) and they have done an excellent job, and its a very comfortable ride.
The volunteers are enthusiastic, but ever so friendly, The rolling stock is in immaculate condition.
A visit to the Enginemans Shovel Cafe, is really good, more than just sandwiches, home made and prepared hot and cold food.
The GCLR really enjoyed the visit, well worth the ticket price, and up the valley was really lovely part of the world.

Thank You very much, its a lovely railway, right at the top of the Welsh valleys, right on top of the hill. The Officers coach was just wonderful, but the whole railway was superb.
