    Hi Chef John! I just made this recipe tonight and it came out wonderfully. I'm a recovering alcoholic, so I left out the whiskey, but I did add a 1/4 tsp of vanilla extract for the missing flavor notes. This is the first recipe of cooked eggnog that's worked out for me as an adult, so thanks for the video and recipe!

      @@AmeeraG242 Hope your sister is doing well. Help your sister find something she wants to live for (friends, children, family e.g.). Try find her a hobby she enjoys, perhaps enrol at college or uni. Educate her on the dangers of excessive alcohol intake. One of the most important things to do is keep her away from friends who drink, get her out of that social circle (if she was in one). Is she drinking because of an underlying mental health condition or something similar? In other words is she self medicating. Explain to her that although it may be a quick fix, the issue will become worse over time. My friend was drinking heavily because of PTSD and social anxiety that came from it. If there is an issue get her to the doctor. Exercise is awesome if that’s possible. Get her to visualise herself free from drink and all the potential that may hold for her. Tell her you love her and believe in her. X

    I made this yesterday and it is absolutely delicious! I followed the recipe word for word. At first it tasted way too sweet. I was going to throw it all out. But wait! You have to mix in the egg whites and refrigerate as the video says. The egg whites balance out the sugar sweetness. I also added 6 TBS of bourbon which also balances out the sweetness. The resulting taste is spot on.

    • @rhettlover1
      @rhettlover1 9 лет назад +3

      +Brad b, your post interested me because eggnog came to America from Britain (I'm sure some such egg-milk-alkie combination was common elsewhere). Anyway, it is/was known in Britain as noggin or egg flip, often consumed at breakfast. In the old country, it might have been made with sherry, wine or brandy, but those spirits were taxed in American, hence the switch to bourbon and/or rum.

    • @bradley2427
      @bradley2427 9 лет назад +4

      +Christine King I think they sell it here around Christmas, I don't think it's a common drink, something more popular is mult wine(not sure how it's spelt) and it's basically Christmas in red wine, still I imagine eggnog is much better than it.
      Oh and tea is pretty popular here as well

    • @rhettlover1
      @rhettlover1 9 лет назад +3

      +Brad b, it's mulled wine, usually red wine with spices. Except in Scandinavia where--please forgive me, I get ridiculous about traditional foodways. And, British tea service is beyond par. Happy Christmas!

    Puerto Ricans make this same holiday "egg-nog" like drink very similar, with the eggs, milk and so forth. However, we put an amazing twist on it to the extreme and bring it to another level with walnuts, fresh cinnamon sticks boiled and use the sticks & juices too, raisins, sprinkled cinnamon as well as Ray & Nephew overproof Rum and Puerto Rican Rum (gold). Its called Coquito. 🥛
    Thank me later y'all. If you'd like the actual recipe, let me know. 👍😊🙃😉

    Hi, Chef John:
    Thank you so much for posting this recipe! In my mind, if it's not cooked, it's not real eggnog. Now I will, and I have, used the store-bought stuff or made the quick non-cooked version on occasion and everyone gulped it down. But for my official Christmas and holiday dinners, I have to make this classic, cooked, real eggnog! It's ssssooooo delicious!!!

    The non cooked version of this - minus the cream - is pretty much just what we call an egg flip in Australia.
    It was a pretty popular drink to give to people who were convalescing to build them up, especially if they didn't have a good appetite yet. I suppose drinks like Sustagen and Ensure have taken the place of egg flips nowadays but I still enjoy one from time to time as a comfort/recovery food. It conjures up memories of my mum taking care of us and making them for us as kids when we were recovering from an illness.

    Great video and recipe, Thanks! If, however, you're concerned about salmonella from raw egg whites... which, BTW, should NEVER be served to pregnant women, young children, the elderly or anyone with a compromised immune system. I have a perfectly acceptable (and equally delicious) solution passed down to me from my great grandmother. Instead of separating, use the whole egg (yolks and whites) and cook with the milk (reserve the cream) to 160 F. degrees. Instead of whipping the egg whites, this alternate recipe calls for whipping the heavy cream and adding IT to the cooked milk/egg mixture. This way, no raw egg is consumed yet the whipped cream adds the fluffy, thick consistency of the whipped egg whites. I promise you, there is no difference in taste or texture.

    i think i was 13 or so the first time i had eggnog and i liked it ( im from denmark and we only have an age for WHEN! you can buy booze, not drink it ) and now i finally have have good recipe. i think im gonna add a tiny bit of Vanilla,

    • @BigMuskachini
      @BigMuskachini 9 лет назад +2

      +MegaMusikMan I would add vanilla and cinnamon.

    • @rhettlover1
      @rhettlover1 9 лет назад

      +MegaMusikMan, yes, I invented the World's Best Eggnog (well, my son and I think so), just a bit of vanilla. I use equal parts bourbon, rum and brandy, I always let the nog cool before adding the vanilla or booze. I also think it is important to let that meld for an hour or so, and bourbon alone would be fine. I was surprised John used the raw egg whites, there has been a lot of push back using raw eggs at all, but that is classic (as is using raw yolks as my mom did) and doesn't waste the whites. I always whipped up cream to fold in as a substitute for the whites. Please do not use cinnamon unless you want to sprinkle it as an experiment.

    What would you recommend as far as incorporating a cream liqueur into this eggnog? I recently bought some Pennsylvania Dutch egg nog and it's pretty wonderful but it's also pretty strong because it has three kinds of liquor, it has Brandy, rum, and whiskey. So it's strong and I'm thinking I could use it instead of the heavy cream? Your thoughts?
