  • For a less manic take with fewer 'ums', here's my article on the Autopian: www.theautopia...
After a few years off, the Toyota Land Cruiser brand name makes its way back to the United States, this time on the new less-expensive, consumer-grade global-market Land Cruiser 250, a midsize off-roader in the same vein as the 4Runner. That sounds like a complicated way of putting it but it's late and I can't come up with a better way to explain it than that.

They could have added a swing away tire carrier and lowered the rear cargo area to accommodate the battery. Possibly. But I am not a engineer so what do I know….

The fabric cloth seats are durable and I like it.

Glad you went to the launch. Your piece for Autopian was superb. As were the 30,000 photos. LOL.

The 200 Series will be the last of the Land Cruiser legends in the USA! They should have called this one the new 4runner. I think it will sell well though.

    Great honest review.

The rear hump is the negative that bothers me most, by far. I hope they offer a gasoline only model sometime in the life cycle to get rid of that. I like this overall but wouldn't put a deposit on one before seeing the 6th gen 4Runner reveal.

Missing the iconic rear split tail gate

So it looks like this new-gen Prado is being marketed globally as the Land Cruiser 250. So you've now got the Land Cruiser 300, Land Cruiser 70, and Land Cruiser 250. It's very important to frame this new US-market Land Cruiser correctly, less you fall into the trap of thinking that it's as robust as the full-size 300 is/200 was. In my experience here, it doesn't seem to be on that level, but it's still going to be a great vehicle to have on the market.

The landcruiser label might make sense if the 300 was canceled globally.
As a reset to a more affordable platform.
But this is the new prado globally so why not call it as such?
It is smaller than a full landcruiser.
The only saving grace is all these vehicle down share variations of the same platform.
So if they didn't want to call it prado call it a landcruiser 250.
Marketing wise it is patronizing the US market.
The current 4runner is more of a landcruiser than this because it at least has the 4.0V6 which is used in the 70 series in some markets.
So anyone wanting this for a landcruiser experience should just go and buy the current 4 runner.

Curious what you think of this new LC vs the new GX. I may wait for the GX hybrid to come out.

Do you consider this Toyota's answer to the Bronco here in the US at the price point? With a rear locker, IFS, stabilizer disconnect in a midsize package, it feels like a direct competitor to the Bronco Badlands.

The truck grew on me just during your video. I feel like they missed it with the rear though, I feel like the rear taillights are too minivanish, and I wish it had a tailgate. Also that raised cargo area def looks annoying. That said, I’d get one if I was in the market. I’m super happy it’s here!

Change is good ..embrass the difference..also Toyota listened to all the "bitching" about price ..fuel economy etc and now we have one that is a good platform for future ones to come//am getting the 1958

I would rather buy a gx470 with 200,000 miles in need a timing belt than one of these....if I were after a Prado

So sad…what a disappointment. If you love the “plastic, barbie car look” this is the vehicle for you. What a shame, there should be no LandCruiser badging on this cheap follow the crowd pretend suv.
